N. Utah Officials Criticized for Spanish Prayer

July 18th, 2010 @ 2:50pm

HYRUM, Utah (AP) -- The Hyrum City Council is being criticized for allowing the closing prayer at the city's Fourth of July program to be given in Spanish.

Councilwoman Stephanie Miller was in charge of coordinating the city's Independence Day celebration. Miller said she didn't intend to offend anyone, but wanted to accommodate the nervous Spanish-speaking pastor asked to deliver the prayer.

Maria Montalvo, of Hyrum's Church of God Ebenezer, asked if the prayer could be offered in Spanish and translated into English.

"She does speak some English, but she was uncomfortable with standing in front of everyone and speaking English," Miller said. "She asked if we would mind if she did it in Spanish, and we didn't see that there was a problem with that as long as it was translated."

The decision has been criticized as unpatriotic and wrong in a flurry of recent letters to the Logan Herald Journal. One letter, from LaVon G. Hanson, a World War II veteran from Logan, called for the city council to be "impeached and sent to Mexico."

Councilman Paul James said he was surprised to hear the Spanish prayer but didn't think it was inappropriate, "because listening to the prayer, it was very patriotic."

Miller said she has apologized to some critics, but does not regret the decision. Still, she said she won't have the prayer offered in Spanish next year.

And while some have suggested that the city bar prayers of any kind at the patriotic program, Miller said that won't happen.

"We are Americans (and have) freedom of religion," she said. "We're not forcing anybody to participate that doesn't want to."

Wow, it's hard to muster even mock outrage for this.

This is nothing like the kids who were punished for wearing US flag shirts on Cinco De Mayo.

It's pretty funny all the way around if you ask me. Not a reasonable person in sight up in Hyrum, judging by that article.

"We are Americans (and have) freedom of religion," she said. "We're not forcing anybody to participate that doesn't want to."

If that applies to prayer at the cities official 4th of July celebration, wouldn't it also apply to the (shudder) speaking of Spanish at the same celebration? Last time I checked the first amendment covers both freedom of religion and speech.

Can't we all just get along?

Is this supposed to be un-American? Am I supposed to be angry? Can somebody tell me how I'm supposed to feel?

Because right now I could care less. English or Spanish, who cares? Doesn't God listen to prayers of all languages or just English? Aren't there more important issues facing our nation today than the language used in a prayer of some 10 person village? For me, getting us out of Iraq and Afghanistan, jump-starting the economy, and directing attention towards the national debt is far more important than this issue.

With the angry old people over this issue combined with all the angry old people of the tea party group, they're really making me a fan of health care rationing. If it wasn't in Obama's health care it should have been. We'd be a lot better off with fewer people from the older generation constantly complaining, driving 15 mph slower while still being in the fast lane with their gas guzzling Cadillac, and drawing off on SS.

Were these 4th of July festivities conducted on the 3rd/5th of July? I'm more outraged at the celebrations held on non-4th days than any prayer in Spanish.

I fail to see what the big deal is here. If she had stood and sang the Mexican national anthem, then I can see people being bent -- but this? Boo frickin' hoo.

Not an issue...and even if I lived in Hyrum I probably would not have been there as I insist on celebrating the 4th of July on the 4th, not the 3rd or 5th

Eh, obviously pretty petty, but I'm with them in the overall scheme of things. Getting your butt inside an English class should definitely be a stipulation to legal immigration in the United States.

English is a hard language to learn buddy. I don't think one or even a couple of english classes would do a whole lot, especially in the case of prayer. Who cares what language people speak anyways. Language and Culturual diversity is a good thing IMO.

English is a hard language to learn buddy.
If you can't learn English then don't come and live in a country whose primary language of communication is English! I might be taking that quote out a bit out of context... but still, that's a terrible excuse for not being able to speak English... while living in the US.

As far as this whole prayer incident goes... not even newsworthy considering the circumstances.

I have to agree with the above posters that ENGLISH SHOULD BE LEARNED! We will not tolerate Spanish. I mean, I just can't understand what they're saying. Plus, yeah, they might have a different language and culture, but I want them to have my language and culture. And hopefully they throw away their culture in the process. Being American is all about being religious, speaking English, and eating hot dogs. If you don't like that, then GET OUT! Thanks for reading,

-Craig

As you can see, it doesn't take much for people to get upset up here in friendly cache valley. This is front page news in the paper and almost every letter to the editor published has been about this over the past week. Nothing but a big yawn fest if you ask me.

No entiendo que es el problema. No es tan importante que alguien hable el ingles.

I am continually amazed at the intolerance of man.
