No chance to get Omer Asik (The Turkish Mt. Mutombo)?

underKANTER

Is there a chance for the Jazz to get him? He will demand much money but can't get it within the next two years due to NBA rules. No doubt, he will get a big salary raise in the third and forth year of his contract. What about a 4 year and 26 million offer? 4.5 / 4.5 / 8.5 / 8.5: such a contract raise might be possible. Get rid of Jefferson and even Millsap if necessary. This guy is an athletic freak and a defensive stud and could come for a solid price. Guarantee him 25-30 minutes per game and he might become a Jazz player. I like our chances, especially if we get rid at least of Jefferson and/or Millsap. Pair him with Kanter and Favors. Discuss.

Who is he?

A great backup center from the Bulls. Is a free agent. 7-0 or 7-1 and 255. But should be like 7-2 in shoes. This guy will soon become 26 years old. His per 36 stats are: 8 ppg, 13 rpg to go along with 3 bpg.

My short player description:

Incredible size and length...Huge wingspan and standing reach... Nice motor... Incredible athleticizm... Explosive leaper... Incredible quickness... Elite level athleticizm and length allow him to be a force on the defensive end... Nice dunk and alley-op option... Nice on the pick n'roll... Can drive to the basket and finish with layups and dunks... Relentless motor on the offensive glass... Great rebounder... Great shot blocker... Elite level defensive player and one of the best at his position... Great help defender, one-on-one defender, help defender... Will simply try to alter every shot... A game changer on the defensive end...

Bad conditioning... Bad hands... No offensie game... No moves... No touch... Bad free-throw shooter... Has not a jumper... Will score on dunks and put backs... Basketball IQ isn't great either... Not a good finisher at all... Get's in foul trouble... Turnover prone...

Potential:

Can become a starter and get his 25-30 minutes per game. Not much more due to his conditioning and lack of offensive game. A game changer on the defensive end with the potential to be an all-defensive team player if he gets more playing time.

Predictions for the next season:

25 mins per game, 6.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg and 1.5 bpg.

My player ratings:

Athleticizm: 10
Size: 10
Defense: 9
Strength: 7
Quickness: 10
Rebounding: 9
Post moves: 4
Jump Shot: 3
Offense: 4
Basketball IQ: 6

Overall: 72

What can he get in the open market?

6-9 millions per year. But can't get so much within the next two seasons due to the NBA rules but will get much more money in his third and fourth year contract.

Good analysis about Asik but jazz really does not need a defensive C right now especially can not score for saving his life. Kanter, Favors, Millsap are already enough for the team if Al goes, may be 4th string big man who can shoot from the outside, can be brought to the team. The priorities are PG and SF and providing the spacing is an obligation.

I think you are overrating his defense, quickness, and athleticism. Don't get me wrong, he has good defense but I wouldn't put Asik with Mutombo in the same sentence.

Don't get me wrong but they have similar body types, athleticizm and game style. For sure, Mt. Mutombo is a four time DPOY player and arguably one of the best defenders in history of basketball but Asik is at least a Mt. Mutombo lite version.

Millsap is a very good role player but is just undersized. He needs to accept coming of the bench which, for sure, he will not. He often gets abused by quicker and bigger players while I know, he tries hard and is one of my favourite players. He still could get 30 mins per game off the bench. Jefferson is not a player that can get us to the next level and Millsap needs to become a sixth man. I'd rather get rid of both of them along with Harris, get a PG that can pass the ball and an athletic SF that can shoot the ball and play some defense. Add Asik to play 25 minutes per game, this year he could start and next year he could become a great player off the bench, ideally along with Millsap, if we keep him. Asik and Millsap with the second unit off the bench would be great. They could compliment each other very well. While Millsap will help Asik's shortcomings on the offensive end, Asik would help Millsap a ton on the defensive side of the floor.

I created a thread about this already. If we could dump Al, and not let Asik take over Kanter's minutes, then he'd be great. He can have a great impact on the game in about 23 min per.

While Favors and Kanter are still learning the game, there will be plenty of outings with foul trouble. I want another guy on the bench that doesn't let leads slip away with junior-league defense.

3 man rotation of Asik-Kanter-Favors or 3 man rotation of Millsap-Kanter-Favors?

Assume Asik 6-8 million per year, assume Millsap 9-11 million.

I call this post of yours BS sire,
because Asik HAS Mutumbo-esque defensive presence, maybe even better, for being a mobile version of Mutombo, who played maybe just too long in his career!
THIS is Asik's only contribution; defence and alterin shots.
he is a real paint policeman!
That said, he finds it extremely hard to avoid fouls, that is why he cannot be a constant 25 mpg player!
Prolly the best second string C of the league with amazingly bad hands.
and
he shall be "overpaid" soon.

I'd pass!

Someone said Fesenko?

Did you ever see Mutombo play before the age of 40?
he was born 40 years old, legend says!
Question is;
can we ever know how old he really was?
:)
I seriously believe, Turks here are overrating their players.
Kanter has still much to prove
and Asik, though reminiscent of Mutombo, is not that good, unfortunately!

I kinda agree this, especially for the upcoming generations. They(we the turks) talk about 92-93-95 born players like there are coming perennial nba all-stars, however I've been watching them for two years and they are not that special at all. For instance today some of them played and lost against Serbia 92+ born players, they can't even score 55+ points per game for the last 3 games.

And in the NBA, except for Illyasova, I'm not that high on turkish players, too.

I think folks are thinking about the Omer from two years ago. The current version has been slowed by injuries. No thanks. Besides, we already have Kanter and Favors.

We do however, need a PG and some 3 point shooting. Can Omer play either of those?

Slowed by injuries? Are you referring to the fact that in the past two years he has played in 148 games or is there some other qualification for slowed by injuries? No, he doesn't fill an immediate need (unless you're one of those weird people who value interior defense and rebounding) but to say that he has been slowed by injuries is wrong.

A few months ago a Chicago Sportsbeat writer came onto 1320. He talked about how Asik injured his back playing overseas earlier this year and had been visibly bothered by it this entire year. He had concerns over that this could be a long term issue. Do you pretend to know better than this writer who watched the Bulls in every game this year?
