is it toronto?

this tweet by brian smith is curiously specific, isn't it?

"Brian T. Smith: Whether Lillard's taken before No. 8 will likely impact any attempt made by Jazz to move up in first round of ‪#NBA‬ draft and select him."

he doesn't say "the mid lottery" or "the 6-10 range"... he is specific about 8. i wondered if that is because 8 is where you start to hear that teams are shopping the pick, but that's not the case. sacto (5), porty (6 & 11), and GS (7) have all been rumored to be gauging interest in trades, so why didn't the tweet say the 5-8 range? it was oddly specific to #8, which makes me wonder: is there something tentative in place with toronto?

i looked at the raps' salary picture. they're under the cap, so we don't have to worry about trades matching dollar-for-dollar. they could take back far more salary than they gave up, and in most cases they could acquire just about any player straight across without giving up any cap-counting assets.

they clearly are not letting go of bargnani, the closest thing they have to a franchise face. i doubt they'd give up their two rookie contract guys either: ed david and derozan. bayless is entering restricted free agency. other than that they have:

* calderon - expiring contract at 10.6M
* amir johnson - inexplicably owed 19.5M over the next three, but taking on somebody like that might be a key to getting a deal done
* linas kleiza - only owed 9.2M over this year and next (assuming he opts in next year), so likely not a salary dump kind of guy
* james johnson - also on a rookie deal but probably less important to them
* gary forbes & solomon alabi - discount rack

so what would the deal be? maybe we get #8 if we give up one of our young veterans + we take back amir johnson's bad contract? that's consistent with the historical cost of moving into the top 10.

Interesting. Do you think we can make them a better deal than HOU offered them? (14+16+Patterson)

they like Linas Kleiza, not a dump for them. Would have to be Amir Johnson. I think they might be looking at Burks or Hayward, as they don't need Harris, Millsap, or Jefferson.

well to answer that i'd be granting the premise that houston has made such an offer, and i always take every draft rumor with several grains of salt. but i'll humor you...

it all depends on what toronto wants. if they think jefferson/millsap/harris > patterson (i think any of those three are better), then maybe. also, do they want a bunch of young assets, or do they want to clear the decks and rebuild?

taking johnson off their books would be a decent favor. for that matter, even dumping kleiza might be important because then they go into the summer of 2013 with AB and whatever the market has dictated for bayless and derozan. neither one of those guys is going to net 8-digit offers on the RFA market, so toronto would have major cap room heading into a very solid FA class. not that FAs flock to canada, but they would become a player in every set of negotiations, or as third teams to help broker S&T deals.

in other words, a vet+future pick for johnson+kleiza+8 deal gives them a chance to stay respectable in the short term while maintaining a pretty awesome position for 2013 and beyond.

probably too greedy on our end. i even doubt they'd give up calderon, since he's a quality guy AND an expiring... but jonas, too? no way.

Isn't there talks of them amnestying him?

Also, the Raptors have spent a lot of time hyping Jonas over the past year. They have a whole high quality youtube series of his last year in Europe that Toronto did.

Agreed. Perhaps something more like Calderon, Amir and #8 for Jefferson, Harris and GS pick. Or something like that. I like it but I'm not sure I'd do it because of the GS pick. I'd rather throw in a future protected 1st. My gut tells me they, along with everyone else, want Millsap though.

welcome to june...

There's a difference between offseason boredom and lapping media comotion up like a good choir boy. We can think original. Just sayin.

Upgrade 3 point shooting, offense running ability, and assists at point? Check.
Dump Jefferson. Check.
Trading a #7 at best pick for a number 8 pick in a deep draft has you hung up? It is June.

Perhaps you're right. But who would we get at #8?

Ah **** it, I'm done. I'm wasting my proverbial breath. We're not making any trades.

Don't give up yet. All signs point to KOC shopping hard--no matter how tight lipped the orgy is, they're definitely window shopping for a youth movement. KOC read JF too much...

I trust them so I don't really care who they decide to pick at #8. They'll make a good choice (or trade higher) while cutting out the risk of losing to another MFING Warriors tank.

This reminds me that we never made up appropriate nicknames for that dickhole tanker Mark Jackson & co. We'd be talking about having a serious shot at a number #3-5 picks right now instead of this long shot at #8 or worse...

I don't think Brian knows anything, I think he's just bored and spreading around crazy rumors like TMZ paparazzi

Tight lipped is no way to throw that kind of a party, Frank.
