What's new

I got bad news about Marvin Williams

We got Williams for a player who was not part of the team's plans, who has been replaced in any case by someone of similar skill set, and who seems slotted to replace Howard and Miles at SF, two inconsistent chuckers who bring nothing to the team except an ability to take volume shots at low conversion rates, while allowing Hayward to move permanently to SG, backed up now by Burkes, and relegating the malcontent, cancerous piece of excrement Bell into the end of the bench oblivion he so richly deserves.

Regardless of whether Williams is nearly the player we hope he is, I see this as big win.

Kudos to KOC.

Just wait until they get their hands on Hell Harris. Then their smiles will surely leave their smug fat Georgia faces.

Hey guys. Hawksfan here from the Hawksquawk board. Wanted to clarify what you are getting in Marvin. Why we like the deal, what you'll like and not like about Marvin.

Marvin is very passive offensively but I'm not sure this is totally his fault. Joe Johnson spent a lot of time dribbling the basketball taking way too long to get into our offensive sets. This led to lots of passes to Josh Smith, Marvin Williams for panic 3 pointers. Marvin was the 4th or 5th offensive option based on Joe, Josh and previously Jamal's egos. Mike Woodson beat Marvin into the proverbial ground with "know your role". Offensively, Marvin has had games before we he has dominated driving to the basket and takes slower wings off the dribble. His handles are inconsistent though and he is a passive finisher. He gets blocked at the rim way more than he should. Marvin is very good without the ball in his hand and is a willing rebounder but was consistently fighting for rebounds with Pachulia, Smith, Horford. Also, in Woodson's system....wings release on shots. This sent JJ, Marvin, Smith away from rebounds often. You can see in his first year away from Woodson, Smith's rebounds were up considerably. I expect the same from Williams with you. Just don't expect Marvin to call for his own shot or to be a sniper without encouragement. He is passive (especially if he misses his first shot or two). Some of Williams best games ironically were when he played the 2 with Joe Johnson out. An example of which you can see here. In this 2010-2011 game vs Boston he scored 26 playing the SG all game. He is versatile.

Defensively - Marvin is a quality defender and can play the 3 or 4 just fine. In Atlanta with both Smith and Horford there was little need to play the 4 but when he did, he was just fine. He has played and frustrated Kobe, Lebron and Wade straight up. He struggles against stronger players on the inside as once again he is passive. But he moves his feet well against bigger 3's and 4's on the perimeter. Marvin suprises himself occasionally by rising up to block shots and get rebounds but will disappear the next day. Marvin is a much better 1 on 1 defender than team defender. Horford and Smith were left out to dry often by Bibby, Teague, JJ, Williams the last couple of years which is why we switched so much. It was easier to switch than force these guys to fight through screens, communicate, etc.

Marvin the player/person - Marvin is a very good teammate, liked by the other guys. Average BBIQ. He is not one to "work on his game" in the off-season. He has spent most of 4 seasons with a bad back and had surgery in the offseason before last year to correct problems. He played on the mend some last year. He is a little injury prone and you will never see someone fall down more. From the duck butt to the tripping in traffic to the falling at the first sign of contact at the basket, Marvin is on his back more than a Brazillian hooker.

Overall - Marvin did many of the same things Horford/Smith did for us just a little worse and therefore was redundant. He was not used to his potential here, poorly coached, poorly motivated. Some of this is Marvin's fault, much of it falls on Mike Woodson.

Good luck with Duck Butt, he will help you. This was a win-win trade. Thanks for Harris. He fills a need. We will be most likely moving Harris (or Teague) along with Horford and either Pachulia or one of the expirings we picked up plus one of our firsts this coming year for Howard/Hedo. We are right now the only team with the assets and desire to take on Hedo's bad contract along with Dwight. This will pick up steam once the other 2 deals are finalized by the league. Morrow and Smith are good friends with Dwight and we have sources saying Smith and Dwight's attitudes about Atlanta have changed dramatically.

Good luck this upcoming year.

Whatevs..... KOC should just trade the entire starting lineup for Lebron. Maybe then KOCBegone would finally chill with the wood work.

This thread is hilarious. Bluesrocker is trying to rain on everyone else parade but nobody is listening. :)

Im not trying rain on no ones parade. Haha. I want the Jazz to be good to. I was just pointing out that Atlanta arent going to miss Marvin. I wanted to see if anyone thought it meant anything.

I actually said this to a friend.

Ill admit Im playing a little of devils advocate here. Im interested to see what we got and if he can help us. I know we cant load up on allstars and we need role players. But, im not going to get my hopes up too much on this.

I have said that I think other fan bases know the most about how good their players are. So seeing Atlanta fans super excited about him leaving, does worry me a bit.

Its a wait and see for me... And if I had to bet my life on it, I would bet he ends up sucking. Im hoping he doesnt.

Change of scenery often motivates guys. He'll see Jefferson is a black hole, but perhaps Marvin can anchor the 2nd unit. I honestly think Marvin is going to fit in just fine and be energized by the positive atmosphere the team has. I really think Millsap needs to stay. He's the hardest working guy we have and sets the example for everyone else.

Atlanta has been a mess the last several years. Of course we said many of the same things about Al coming over from Minnesota.

That last thing is my point exactly. I remember the day Al got traded here, and I went and checked out the Wolves forum. All the things we hate about Al were the same things they hated about him.

If Marvin isnt a keeper for Atlanta, and is just a throw away player, and their fans could care less for him, then why should it be any different for us.

Ive heard other people just chalk it up to they are a dumb fan base. Thats idiotic, immature, bs. We arent the only fan base that knows basketball.

On the other hand could he be worse than Howard, CJ and Bell?

Looking at his last few games in the playoffs(against Boston) helps dampen the excitement a little. The positive is the more his minutes increased the better his performance. If he could put up his game 6 numbers here we'd all be thrilled.

Game 1 1-5, 2 pts, 0 dimes, 1 board
Game 2 1-6, 3 pts, 0 dimes, 6 boards
Game 3 1-6, 3 pts, 1 dime, 11 boards
Game 4 2-6, 8 pts, 0 dimes, 3 boards
Game 5 5-9, 15 pts, 1 dime, 4 boards
Game 6 6-13, 16 pts, 3 dimes, 8 boards

Its a good point. I think he may be better than any of those guys. He probably will.

I'll say this, I like that we didnt go after someone past 30.

Whats sucks though is now we wont be going after a serious upgrade like Iggy or Deng. We still have Al to spend on something, but what are we going to spend it on now? Probably nothing. This probably means we keep Jefferson now.
