Coach Corbin Speaks

Notes from an interview Friday with Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin.
Corbin said Utah 2012 second-round draft pick Kevin Murphy is a "scorer." During the initial three days of Summer League camp this week near Orlando, Fla., Murphy immediately impressed with his ability to quickly get off shots and his understanding of how to play in a pro-style offense. The former Tennessee Tech guard is also longer and taller than Corbin thought he'd be.
Second-year Jazz players Alec Burks and Enes Kanter are in excellent shape, following recent appearances at P3, a high-performance training facility in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Corbin said Utah plans to keep all 16 players in camp on its Summer League roster. The Jazz will primarily play athletes on their official roster, though, during next week's games.
Corbin will watch contests from the bench and stands but won't coach, relying on a rotating crew of assistants to run the team.
Corbin wouldn't comment about specific Jazz personnel changes because of the ongoing free agency moratorium period. However, he acknowledged Utah has already made a couple positive moves on paper and he likes the direction the Jazz are heading.
Corbin expects Utah's 2012-13 offense to mostly remain the same. But he expects to make some changes to the team's pick-and-roll defense, which was a liability throughout 2011-12. Alterations could be based off personnel changes, Corbin said.
Lastly, Corbin said it's an honor for the Jazz to have Gordon Hayward and Derrick Favors practicing with the U.S. men's basketball team in Las Vegas.

Thanks for posting this. I definitely think the Jazz need work on their pick-and-roll defenses. It's just nice that they'll get to have a real training camp and practice time this year.

We had a pretty good offense. I don't know why so many people are annoyed with it.

If Al keeps improving on passing out of the post then things will keep getting better, but sometimes last year I was convinced that we had the most boring offense in the entire league. I think Mo will open things up and things look brighter as far as entertainment value goes.

Our offense was terrific. Our defense was horrific. That is why Al needs to be moved to the bench or another team and Favors needs to start.

I think the problem with our offense is that Ty relied too heavily on Jefferson. Jefferson is a willing passer if there is more movement. Movement makes getting outside shots off easier and makes cuts to the basket easier. The personnel changes will force Ty to make some change to the offense.

I'll be both happy and pissed if Corbin makes adjustments that solve the PnR problem. Happy it's solved, pissed it wasn't addressed all last season.

Maybe he's thinking that changing Harris for Mo will improve it. I can't say that I see that helping much, but, I'll take a wait and see approach.

^Getting pissed over an event after it's been properly addressed does not fit your yin/yang avatar. Time to make a change.

Training camp, bro. Training camp.

I agree with 2/3rds of your post. Our offense was pretty good (not terrific)—besides the black hole that was Big Al, no one could hit an open jumper. Hopefully the Williams boys (plus a dash of Mr. Murphy) can solve that problem.

I was not annoyed with the offense. I was just frustrated when the ball would go into the black hole and stall everything. The Jazz O is a beauty to watch when it flows correctly.

Our offense was great until end game situations and the playoffs when we needed buckets and other teams defenses stepped up.

I did see in his quotes where he says "alterations could be based off personnel changes". Hopefully that personnel change is shipping off big Al.

The biggest thing I don't like about Al is he doesn't hustle. Hustle is the key behind everything. You don't even care if you don't hustle. Al has a lot of talent, it's too bad he doesn't try harder. That's how you boil down all Al's faults. He's not a great rebounder because he won't go get it. Can't guard PnR because he won't try. He doesn't transition very well either offensively or defensively. He's like a ball and chain out there.

Guys who leave it all out there are the ones who win Championships.

We aren't going to fix nothing until we have a group of guys who are all on the same page about how bad they want it. Al just doesn't want it. It's just not in his DNA. So thinking we are going to somehow just adjust to it is stupid.

Give me a guy like Noah who goes out and busts his but.

Given the additions to the teams, keeping the offense we had last year makes a lot of sense.

Pretty much reliant on whether or not Jefferson was hitting his push shots. There was no consistent outside game. Need to have more offensive versatility with different players being able to step up. The bench also needs to improve. I think that happens no matter what we do as just getting rid of Bell and CJ means more consistency and better outside shooting, no matter who gets those minutes.

Also think the Jazz relying on just 8-9 guys every night is key. Corbin trying to find minutes for all 12 active players hurt the team. Even if no one gets traded, limiting minutes to the 4 bigs, 3 wings and 2 PG's will help. I'd swicth Watson and Tinsley every couple of games as the #2/#3 PG's to keep both of them rested, but not rusty. Sorry, Murphy, Carroll and Evans. You guys might deserve some minutes, but as the 11-13th players, it's just not going to happen except during garbage time or in case of injuries.
