Will Big Al or Millsap Come off the Bench to Start the Season?

I voted no but immediately wanted to change my vote. I think Favors gets the nod over Millsap at the start of the season. I certainly hope so. The more Favors, the better.

Among the top 20 most used lineups last season, these were ones with positive +/-, listed in descending order of +/- per minute (or 30 minutes or whatever you prefer):

*Harris-Hayward-Millsap-Favors-Jefferson
*Watson-Miles-Hayward-Millsap-Jefferson
*Watson-Hayward-Howard-Millsap-Jefferson
*Harris-Burks-Hayward-Millsap-Jefferson

*Harris-Bell-Hayward-Millsap-Favors
*Harris-Hayward-Howard-Favors-Jefferson

In other words, the best answer might still be Millsap-Favors-Jefferson on many nights.
Was tried for only 65 minutes last season, though.

Of course this list has no way of adjusting for "level of difficulty" (the strength of the opposing lineup).

Note the conspicuous absence of the most-used starting lineup: *
Harris-Bell-Hayward-Millsap-Jefferson (-0.08 points per minute)

Subbing in Miles was not miles better, but slightly.

BTW, *Harris-Bell-Hayward-Favors-Jefferson was the worst in this group of 20 most used lineups.

Favors will start, in a scenario similar to last season.
 
I would expect Paul and Al to start. If Favors started, I would expect him and Al. And I think there's no chance Al doesn't start.

But I don't think it's nearly as enormous an issue as it's made out to be for 2 reasons.

1) We were incredibly fortunate that none of our bigs got hurt last year. And on quality, our 4 bigs collectively are Top 5. That's a good thing, but everyone is understandably worried about development.

2) The development issues don't scare me. Even if Favors doesn't start, he still has a ways to go offensively and continuing to improve against 2nd units, at least to start the year, isn't such a bad idea. As to Kanter, I'm more interested in his 'development' playing with Favors than the actual minutes. They were dreadful together last year, so more time together is good.

Yes, it is Favors' to win, because he hasn't won it yet.

In the playoffs, Favors started once--and that was alongside Millsap and Jefferson.

In the last 5 games of the season, Favors started once--when Millsap was DNP.

Favors started 9 games in the regular season--and 10 overall including the playoffs.

The Jazz favor seniority to a fault until the challenging player (e.g., Millsap as a rookie) clearly proves superior. Favors' offense is too iffy still. I will not be surprised if Jefferson/Millsap-Favors-Williams is a better frontcourt, but until Marvin proves himself better at the 3, I predict a starting lineup of Jefferson-Favors-Millsap-Hayward-Mo for the most of the time at the beginning of the season.

I'm sure that KOC has tried hard to make that happen, but to no avail, because Al is not convincing enough of a closer or defender. Other teams want Millsap or Favors.

I agree that this is what Corbin is thinking, BUT, this line of thinking is RIDICULOUS. Who cares what his perceived value is? You are here to win a title. Right now, Favors and Hayward are who you are hoping will lead you to that title. You know Al won't.

So why would you play the player you know won't get you anywhere, while sitting the guy you hope will take you there?
 
No matter what anyone else says, or whatever logic is brought into this conversation, Corbin will start both Al and Sap if they are both on the roster and health at the start of the season.

That's just the way it is. Get used to the idea now so you cry less when it happens.

Well, I'm not so sure we wouldn't be better starting the big lineup than Marvin. That's a separate issue. But realistically, MW wasn't brought over to come off the bench.

The idea of Al and Millsap both starting is like the death of a loved one in that even when you know it's coming, it's still horrible when it happens.

Because Marvin doesn't know the system yet.

Should Marvin start? Probably.

Will he start right off at the beginning of the season? I say no.

Give me a break. Know the system? If Al is starting, it's stand around and jackpot in the corner on offense, and don't get beat on defense, because Al won't be there to back you up.

In all seriousness, these NBA systems aren't that different. If he can't pick up the offense over the summer, training camp, pre-season games....then KOC just got screwed in this trade.
 
How do you see who voted what? It always says that everyone will be able to see what you chose because it is a public poll. So where do you see it? I dont mean the total either, I mean individually.

I also remember Locke saying that the lineup of Al at Center and Milsap at PF, defensively, contributed to the worst defensive efficiency in the NBA...or somewhere close to it
