On a slightly different note I hate it when both sides say the other is turning the country into Nazi Germany.
Both sides do it. Liberals for Bush, and now some conversatives for Obama.
I live over her in Germanye, and have taken an interest in WW2 sites, and history. After recently going to a concentration camp, and staring head first into an oven, reading some stories by survivors of the sickness commited....
I get really sickened that we throw around Nazis, Hitler, and try to tie them to today.
We are doing the people that were brutalized a disservice by acting like today is anything like that time.
This is so true.
The brutality of the Nazis and the racism displayed by participators in the Holocaust (not only Nazis, but Poles, fellow Jews, Russians, French, etc) is probably unparalleled in history.
A book I would highly recommend for anyone would be Auschwitz: A Doctor's Eyewitness Account by Dr. Miklos Nyiszli
It's a super easy (fairly short) read and it truly is eye-opening. Jews who were "promoted" as leaders over fellow Jews act even MORE brutal towards fellow Jews. How strange is that? The inhumanity of folks... The guilt of so many, mostly found within the SS. They literally drug, drink, and smoke themselves in attempts to cover the harsh realities of the hell that they're bringing on others and themselves.
One of the most haunting stories:
We all know about the gas chambers. Well, one little girl survived... She had fallen under another corpse which protected her. She becomes quickly a celebrity within minutes. The doctors and soldiers celebrate her survival... Then, the harsh reality.. Now what? She's too young to be sent to the camp. She cannot be hidden. She cannot be sneaked out.... She survived... But for what? If higher ups, like the "Angel of Death" Dr. Mengele, catch wind of this, all of their heads will roll. Soooooooooooo....
The German commander issues the order to have her shot... He cannot carry the order out himself, so orders someone else to do it. He leaves the room and goes outside to smoke.
So many folks are trapped into lose lose situations... So many folks have opportunities to take stands but don't... So many people become lost in just inhumanity and hatred...
To compare Bush or Obama to Hitler, is insane. And to compare the Holocaust to... Really... Anything else, is just so ignorant it's not even funny.
What's truly amazing is how thorough and all encompassing the Holocaust and Nazism was. It wasn't just the Germans acting racist... They certainly had help, from so many other countries and peoples... And how do you classify those soldiers who were "following orders?" Or Jews who helped the Nazis in order to survive? What about the hell that the Russians brought once they came back to bury Germany?
To me, it's utterly incredible that this happened less than 100 years ago... So brutal, large, and just all-encompassing.
