Watson May Not Be Back When Camp Starts

I like Watson's toughness, but he can't hit a shot to save his ***.
That being said, I still don't think there's a better back up the Jazz can really afford if they want to be able to re-sign there young core.

I think the Jazz should have a 9-man rotation to begin with, which does not include Watson at all. Otherwise Foye, Burks, and/or Kanter will be getting further under 20 minutes/game. If Watson or Tinsley get the back-up PG minutes, then either Foye or Burks get nothing, or they divide 20 minutes between them, or Hayward plays some at the 3 and Sap plays less or 1) takes some of Favors' minutes at the 4 or 2) Favors gets some minutes at the 5 and takes minutes from Kanter. The solution is to play Foye at the backup 1 and have Hayward and Burks use their playmaking and passing and our post players with good 3-point shooters, which we now have. By the way, Burks is a superb spot-up three point shooter according to Synergy. It's only when he moves that his % goes way down.

Mo/Foye (28/20)
Hayward/Burks (30/18)
Marvin/Sap (30/18)
Favors/Sap (34/14)
Al/Kanter (30/18)

I think Watson will likely play out this contract with the Jazz and join them as an assistant coach next season or shortly after. He appears to have the desire to move into coaching. Whomever has the better season between Watson and Tinsley will be re-signed for '13-'14 and the other will retire or go elsewhere, so that the Jazz can bring in a younger PG to either learn under Mo Williams or take over.

I honestly soured on Watson a lot last season. I have very little interest in seeing him as the backup PG this season.

I soured on him a bit as well. I think it's probably because Tinsley>Ronnie Price and Price had been Watson's main competitor for backup PG minutes prior to last year.

My hope is we dispel the myth Foye can play the point as quickly as possible. I'd love to be wrong about that, too, but I'd just as soon get past the mystery quick so I won't have to read millions of posts about how Foye should play the 1.

You are right. Foye should play the 2.

Burks should play the 1. How you like them apples?

By dispelling the "myth" you are proposing something else; either Burks or Foye not playing a single minute. Look at the starters' minutes, and ask yourself where players get minutes. Foye is not John Stockton, so you have to try different things than the Stockton/Williams offense. Compare the players.

Randy Foye: PER (13.56) shot 38.6% & 43.8% (post season) from 3
Earl Watson: PER (9.46) shot 19.2% from 3
Jamaal Tinsley: PER (10.90) shot 27% & 25% (post season) from 3

Earl is the best defender, Tinsley is horrendous on D because he has lost seven steps, Foye's manageable on D, 6'4", and fast.

Where do the minutes come from for Millsap, Burks, Kanter, Foye, backup PG? Someone is left out, and Foye is better than either of our two PG's, so I say be flexible and play the best player. Use Hayward and Burks to make plays, our bigs to score on the block, and our good three point shooters to do their thing. It's not ideal, but its the best option, and Foye has played PG in the past. And the most important point is that Watson and Tinsley suck!

Mo (28) (20 remain)
Hayward (30) (18 remain)
Marvin (28) (20 remain)
Favors (34) (14 remain)
Al (30) (18 remain)

I'd rather have good ball handling and running a team well from my PG than stellar defense. I'd much rather have a defensive center like Favors. As a result Tinsley is a little higher on my list than Earl (at least he was last year) but Earl brings good stuff as well that can help us win.

I am with about half of the board. i hope that when he does come back from injury the rotations will already be set. a point gaurd that cant really shoot or drive to the rim isnt much help. especially with alot of young guys. the need a good leader out there. i think watson does his best work from the sidlines. he is always up and off the bench to give pointers during time outs and stuff.

Good thing we haven't released Braille. If Foye plays minutes at the point, Corbin is going to need Braille's "veteran leadership" at the 2. No reason to resort to playing Burks. Corbin is a Sloan disciple: Vets are good; young guys are bad.

@JJAS:
Hayward is definitely going to be playing quite a few minutes at the 3. He can. He should.

i agree with billy, foye-at-point is destined to fail... just like it has every other time in his career that teams have tried to play him like one.

PG is by far our weakest spot on the depth chart with or without watson. if mo ever gets hurt (something that's not, ya know, out of the question - 108 career games lost to injury, or 12 per season) we are totally screwed at PG.

we have a clear-cut starter (but even he does not have a distributor's mentality), two subpar veteran backups, and a bunch of guys we think can play the point in a pinch, like burks or foye. obviously hayward is a very good creator (probably the best on our roster right now, which is actually kind of scary) but even he is only going to have so many opportunities to be the initator.

i would LOOOOOOVE to get a more traditional PG as the backup.

So does he take minutes from Marvin Williams, Millsap, or even worse Favors, since that means more Millsap at the 4 if he's not at the 3? I've hear a lot of people throwing around that this or that person can play positions, but nobody has said where the minutes come from. I assume that Millsap, Favors, Hayward, and Jefferson will all have around 30-34 minutes/game. I assume that Mo and Marvin will have 26-30 minutes/game and that Kanter and Burks will have 15-20 minutes/game. When you look at the minutes and the distribution, you cannot have this above and play Foye at all unless he is at the PG position. I'm not making an argument--simply doing math. I'd like to see another way if there is one.
