ESPN-2012 NBA Player Rankings

That is because of the "LA Effect". Not to mention Hayward is white so he can't be that good in today's NBA, right?

Some of the greatest players of all time are whiteys.

Larry Bird
Jerry West
Bill Walton
Moses Malone
Jason Kidd

All of those guys spring to mind.

All of those guys are old school. This is new school, that is the difference. Yes, Jason Kidd is old school.

Yes, I noticed you put Moses Malone on that list.

I slightly disagree with you. I think that it will be Hayward, Favors, Jefferson then Millsap.

We'll see. The main reason I think Al will be higher than Millsap is that I've read several things this summer talking about Al being so good yet under the radar.

Oh, in the mind of the national collective, Jefferson is the clear better player. Was close last year, and it'll likely stay close, with Jefferson ahead by 5-10 slots.

Would bet my life on Al being ranked higher. Played better in the playoffs (probably the only time most analysts even WATCHED the Jazz) and collected better 'stats' that are easily sellable like PPG, RPG and BPG

Gonna predict that Al cracks top 50

i've also read several things this summer talking about how the jazz are limited by al jefferson's abilities. so i think on a national level there is plenty of both schools of thought out there.

Kind of surprised Hayward is lower than Favors. Not because I don't think Favors is going to be awesome if given minutes, but more because Hayward actually got playing time last season and I was very impressed with his improvements. His hustle, his defense, his passing, etc. were decent last year and assuming he improved over the off season, I would have at least ranked him about the same as Favors.

I was slightly surprised by that too. My only explanation is that if you are 6'10"+ and athletic then you might get overrated on this list.

Disclaimer- I don't think that Favors is overrated at all.

this is 104 national guys, some of whom are veritable national media members and others are bloggers who mostly cover a specific team. that means that most of them probably weren't paying attention for 66 games while hayward was getting PT. the most eyes are on the jazz in the postseason, when hayward looked lost and confused and favors looked like he was on the verge of exploding out of his skin. so i'm not too surprised to see people sleeping on hayward despite his strong (at times) regular season.

kind of like guys who play well during the college season but then give up the limelight to a guy who has a better tourney.

So they put Mario Chalmers up ahead of I don't know how many really good players. Think I'll go find something else to read.

funny, haberstroh just did an insider article pointing out that barea, kidd and stevenson had huge drops from last year and theorizes that it's because the rankers OVERVALUED them as role players on a title team... then a few hours later, mario chalmers comes in around the century-mark.

obviously the 104 human voters are susceptible to errors of judgement, like giving a guy way too much credit for being part of a title team. that HAS to be what happened to chalmers.

I agree with this. So, who is better, Chalmers or Sefolosha?

if i were starting a team and could have one of the two, i'd take sefolosha. not as potent a threat from the arc, but probably a more complete offensive player, and miiiiiiiiiiles ahead on D.

Ditto for Shane Battier at #107, although reputation also plays a part with his rank, I suspect.

EDIT: referring to him being overrated for being on a Championship team. He's a great roleplayer, but not a great player.
