Memo to Get Training Camp Invite?

Could Memo ever guard anyone? Who knows? That is the point of training camp, to find out. Don't tell me we are better served just inviting D-League scrubs.

No, we're better off inviting a few guys from the YMCA who won't require guaranteed contracts. Provided Jazz keep Carroll (who doesn't have a fully-guaranteed deal) and waive/buy-out Mr. Bill, or whatever is name is, the roster will be set at 14. No room for any others.

i love how everybody in this thread knows:

a) the exact shape memo is in.
b) the contract he'd be demanding.

i mean, it's not gonna happen... but c'mon, when did you all have this magical workout session followed by a contract negotiation?

It doesn't matter when so long as it was at Best Buy.

There IS NO 15th man on the Jazz roster. KOC likes to keep the spot open for trades or to cover any injuries that come along. With Watson still hurt, I'd count on the Jazz PERHAPS signing a PG to a non-guranteed deal. That could be someone who gets invited to camp, or it might be a player another team cuts after pre-season.

I wasn't necessarily advocating our need for a 15th man as much as I was challenging the notion that a 15th man needs to bring some tangible skill to fill a need.

Memo would be great for this team. If you think Kanter and Favors will be out of foul trouble most of the time, you are crazy. Memo is perfect for 5 or so minutes a game as a stretch, and then if needed, he can play a little more on nights Kanter decides to pull a Hoffa impersonation.

That's just it though Green. He wouldn't be that guy that sits on the end of the bench, and if the other bigs get in foul trouble, maybe
we see ol' Memo. You know Corbin would give him too many mins, and it could stunt Kanter's growth.

You have to make up your mind, are we going to truly develope Kanter or not? I'd be ok with Memo if we didn't have Kanter, but
we do.

Obviously there are a lot of "ifs" with the Memo thing. IF he wants to be paid over the mininum and get constant minutes, then I wouldn't support signing him. If he just wants to play a end of the bench/mentor/assistant player coach/spot minutes role, then why not?

Behind the scenes if he knows that's his role, and is fine with it then that's one thing. If that was the case then of course having him
wouldn't be a bad thing. I just don't want anything to get in the way of Kanter's development. You can understand that.

In addition to Big Al of course.

You talk of developing Kanter, but it isn't Memo that would be standing in his way. It is Millsap/Jefferson. The ironic thing is, if Memo was healthy enough to play 5 or so mins a night with some foul trouble duty thrown in, it would give Utah the depth they needed to feel like they COULD trade Jefferson or Millsap, opening up a lot more minutes for Kanter's development.

Signing Memo is probably a sign that the Jazz are trying to get Kanter more minutes vs standing pat with what we have and turning an Al or Paul trade into a very, very thin front line.

this is exactly why memo (or ANY 4th big for that matter) only makes sense if they do something with al first.

If you trade Al right now, you have to get a backup big and a young pg back. That might be a tough trade. If you have Memo as your 4th/5th big, then you have a lot more flexibility in what you can trade Al for.

Of course, this is all contingent on Memo being able to consistently hit the open 3. If he can't do that, he is worthless.

yeah, that's what i've been saying all summer. well, almost: i don't care if it's a "young pg" as long as its someone whose natural tendency is to make plays, so we have something a little different from what mo supplies. my dream trade has always been a 3-way trade that put al in houston and gives us jose calderon and one of houston's many bigs. the reality is, houston is still going to be actively shopping through camp. they have to, because they have 20ish players under contract right now and if they don't swing some trades, they will have to cut recent draftees at the end of next month.

back to memo, though, i don't necessarily think he's the answer -- but if he played kanter's 13-15 mpg so that kanter could move up to favors 21 mpg so that favors could take over al's minutes, i'd be fine with that. like i said, assuming the other 3 guys stay the same, i'd rather have memo as a 4th big than al as a 1st big.
