Si.com Players to watch at Training Camp - Paul Millsap

FYI .. short and sweet:

The Jazz are loaded at forward. Millsap started in the frontcourt alongside Al Jefferson last season, but he'll be pushed in training camp by Derrick Favors, Marvin Williams and to a lesser extent Jeremy Evans. If any of them can outplay Millsap during camp, the Jazz may be inclined to deal the impending free agent.

Any chance he's dealt before the season begins to give Favors maximum chance to excel? May be that's a stretch, knowing how much KOC loves depth in the front court. But if a team loses a starting PF early due to injury and is desperate, then I wouldn't count it out.

Discuss.

Who do you guys think will start as our C and PF come the start of the season?

My take is Jefferson & Favors.

The complexities of Millsap, Jefferson, and Favors

The Jazz are first and foremost going to try to win this season. Even if Favors, Millsap and Jefferson are not all "happy" the Jazz will try to win games. They won't get equal value by trading Millsap and probably won't by trading Jefferson. they will get back a crappy contract of some sort by trading Jefferson. But the Jazz have shown their hand. They want to retain Millsap. One, they offered him a contract extension. Two, they have passed on too many trades for Millsap so far. You don't pass on trading for Kevin Martin, Kyle Lowry, and Ryan Anderson and then turn around and try to shop that player. The Jazz are keeping Millsap as long as they can. Also, Millsap is such a fan favorite among Jazz fans generally, that it would have to be a home run type deal to trade Millsap. The Jazz aren't going to trade Millsap just to clear up time for Favors. They can just let Jefferson walk at the end of the year to do that.

I don't possess a calculator large enough to calculate the odds of Jeremy Evans outplaying Sap.

Maybe you should purchase this one. :-)

I think Millsap is going to start at the 3. That's my hope, mostly because:

1) No way will Al come off the bench. It won't happen.
2) Millsap has done nothing but be the best player on this team for the last two years and it is unreasonable to ask him to come off the bench simply because a talent has started to flash his potential more.
3) Favors should start.

I think it makes more sense for Millsap to either start at PF or be the backup PF/SF. I think starting him at SF would just cut into the wing's minutes a bit too much.

Sub out Sap quickly, like at the 8 minute mark, put Favors in at PF. Then sub Paul back in at SF around the 4 minute mark.

Or just start Favors and sub Millsap into SF/PF spot and play him at SF to end games.

... I don't know I just think it'll be difficult to play Millsap at SF (as a starter or as a sub), simply because SF is already crowded with Hayward & Marvin at that position.

You can say Hayward can play SG, but that'll just stunt the grow of Burks.

It just makes more sense to play Millsap at the backup PF position and trade him during the season while he still has trade value...

Favors is starting. Bringing him off the bench is just continuing to delay the inevitable. Milsap has been our best player, but he also will bring back the most assets. favors will be our best player by the end of the season IMO anyways.

Good thoughts here: After reading the thread, I'm totally unsure. I would lean more toward Numbs way of thinking because it gives you your best players on the floor, rest of the roster be damned.

I also think that at this point in Favors career he'd be better off playing C alongside Sap at PF ... Rather than him playing PF alongside Al at C.

So a starting line up of:
C - Big Al
PF - Favors
SF - Millsap
SG - Hayward
PG - Williams?

With the primary bench players being Kanter, Burks, Marvin Williams and Foye?

This article lost all credibility when it talked about trading Sap. He helps our team. Trade AL, I don't care if you get a little less than you should out of him. We will have a better team without him, even if we lose is 1 on 1 skills.

Just my opinion.

Not true.

I'd say that is the opinion of alot of people on this forum. I say trade Al and keep Millsap if possible.
