Obama & Guns

What will a reelected Obama do with guns? So far the only thing he has done is to allow for guns in National Parks. Would he crack down if he wins a second term? On assault rifles? handguns?

I personally believe the assault rifle thing could get changed up - i`m not sure if that is a good or bad thing. For home protection a handgun or shotgun seems best, but who am I to tell someone what they should or shouldn`t use.

But I think alot of people are scared Obama will try to take away their pistols, revolvers, rifles and shotguns - which I do not think will happen. The second amendment is very strong.

I think at some point the assualt weapons ban that expired during the Bush years will be revisited. However, I wouldn't be surprised if nothing happens at all.

Other than that the 2nd Amendment is here to stay - the people who think that Obama is coming after their handguns are delusional. But hey, if he does, at least they still got their bibles.......for now.

Can you explain what was banned by the assault weapons ban and what effect it had on gun violence?

EDIT: Full disclosure, I'm genuinely interested in the viewpoint of anyone who is in favor of the AWB or a newer version of it. I'm of the general opinion that those who support it are largely ignorant about firearms and would be happy to be proven wrong on that point.

I'm sorry, did I say I was for it?

I must have missed that part.

No, you didn't say. My post was a little over confrontational, but my question, to you or anyone else, is genuine. Do people who favor gun control know anything about guns or how to effectively "control" them?

I often make the comparison between liquor laws in Utah and gun restrictions in D.C. and NY city. These laws are created by people who view the items being regulated as evil and unnecessary, and based on that belief have no actual understanding of the items in question and even less understanding of the culture surrounding them.

I've said in other posts that gun control should largely be left up to the states. I lived in NYC and lax guns laws would be insane - too crowded, too stressful, too much parinoia. Spend a day in the NYC subway system and I guarantee you there will be at least a half dozen instances where you'll feel like you're capable of taking another person's life.

But I also lived in Texas - and what works in NYC wouldn't work in Austin or San Antonio or Corpus Christi...

But what constitutes a lax gun law? In the crowded city streets of NYC a semi-automatic rifle (sometimes incorrectly referred to as an assault weapon) would be an inferior weapon to carry around or to use in the commission of a crime. So we should probably back off the restrictions on those and focus on how to control the carrying of concealed handguns by people not licensed to carry them, right?

From what I have read Obama is not going after tighter/stricter gun laws. Certain Republican leaders have even on occassion come out and said they agree with the President on certain gun stances. The President is, in my opinion, being unfairly hit with critique (in some cases fear mongering) on this area from the right.

One recent bill I have heard about is restricting online ammo sales.

I agree and don't really fear Obama from a gun restriction perspective. Not sure why I was so hot to turn this thread into a gun control debate. Sorry all. Carry on.

This thread was created to be a debate about Obama and guns. So you are fairly close to target.
