Injuries on offense have an effect on the defense.
If BYU has to go back to Nelson or rely on somebody like Lark then look for the defensive stats to suffer. It's hard to maintain such a high defensive rating when your QB is either turning the ball over every time he touches it (sometimes deep in your own territory) or completely ineffective. If you don't feel like OSU won't take advantage of 4+ fumbles or that ND won't punch it in if they get the ball on the goal line then you haven't been watching football this year.
Hill was at least a spark.
Nelson is a gigantic liability and Lark? Well... Most likely worthless.
The best teams remaining on our schedule will for sure take advantage of the gimmies that Nelson or Lark will give them.

Good thing I just like BYU winning regardless of how they can go about it because I can already hear the media pooh pooh poohing BYU's win on Saturday and attributing it to OSU's QB being out.

It really doesn't matter at this point. BYU is championship or bust. Once that is out the window it's all about securing 6 wins and then building for next year.
It's possible they could just have 1 loss from here on out. Maybe sneak into the top 25. That'll help for next year.

Here's the big question, is there any way they can test Riley's health in-game without him having to commit multiple turnovers first and then get pulled? Just let him take a few pops and then call a couple of bombs or something? Because obviously whatever their standards are in practice for the coaches to be convinced Riley is good to go have already backfired in two games. I say there isn't a chance in hell his back healed up in a couple of weeks. I just hope they've developed a quicker trigger on pulling him if he appears hurt at all.

I think he's rested and feeling better but I don't buy that he's ready to go. And you can bet OSU will be all over him. Recipe for disaster in my mind. I could see some serious mistakes early on for Riley. Dig a 2-3 TD hole. Then Lark come in and play hero and finish the season out.
Or they could get smart and keep the ball out of his hands with 30-40 RB carries. And let him pass but only quick game. That would at least protect his injuries.

I don't think it takes a doctor to tell you that playing a reckless, turnover prone, running QB with no arm, with a fractured vertebrae, is a bad idea.
If anything, Lark should have been starting for years now.
BYU having Hoffman, Apo, and Friel while playing with a QB incapable of getting the ball into their hands is the equivalent of rolling out the Dream Team with a PG like Steph Marbury or Monta Ellis.
I don't care how injured Riley might or might not be. I don't care about leadership or courage or long hair and abs.
Just play the QB who doesn't turn the ball over and who can get the ball to the hands of our playmakers. I've never seen a BYU offense underachieve so much as this offense. You might possibly have the most talented WR/TE core in history and we're completely incapable of getting them the rock when we play Riley.... And lets face it, Doman isn't helping things with calling out so many option runs...
Could you imagine how lethal this offense would be right now if Anai and Max Hall were here? Max probably isn't even considered a top 5 QB in BYU history and Anai was essentially fired. Yet, both these guys are lightyears ahead of what we have right now. BYU would be undefeated and probably a top 15 team had Max been QB and Anai been OC.

Preachin to the choir. Hate to say it but would love to maybe see Riley get injured beyond repair for his own good. Because you know he's going to play until he dies. Make the decision to go with Lark easy. Lark gets rewarded for his efforts the last several years. Riley bows out on his shield with honor. And Taysom takes over next year.

And if you continue to waste that talent....how are you ever going to recruit similar level talent to play WR at BYU while the same system is still around? I'd be counting down the days until Doman gets canned if I were a pass catcher right now at BYU.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Duck Rodgers again.
This is the elephant in the room that many seem to not want to talk about...
BYU is getting exposure this year... But is it the kind of exposure we want? Inept playcalling, inability to pass the ball, inability to look like you have any sign of an offense?
What about the health of your child? Do you really want to send your child away so that some rookie playcaller learning on the fly can call an senseless option with the game in the bag so that your kid can take a completely unnecessary hit?
We as posters and fans often focus on the scoreboard. But what about the bigger picture?
Recruiting has got to be a huge concern right now.

Every report I hear is that Lark is really bad. I have heard he throws about the same as Riley and has lead feet.

It's not worth anything now, but I remember Norm Chow saying he was the best high school quarterback he had ever seen. He looks like he has a much bigger arm than Nelson in the pre-game warmups I've seen, that's all I know. And he actually might be faster than Nelson in the 40, but he doesn't have any shake to him.
BYU's QB history is littered with guys buried on the depth chart that eventually became pretty damn good when the opportunity presented itself though. I think that tells us that practice evaluations are an imperfect science. I don't know if Lark is any good, but if you're getting poor quarterback play anyway, you might as well take a look at what he can do when the game lights are on. The only danger is if you do find something good there, then people start asking where the hell this guy has been for the past 4 years.
