Video Game Thread

BTW, anyone pick up Dishonored? That game was mostly off my radar, but it's come out to almost universal acclaim. I may wait to see if I can get it for cheap on Black Friday, but it's definitely one I'm considering picking up eventually.
I picked it up a few days ago, and I am really liking it so far. The atmosphere is fantastic.

I don't hit this thread too often so sorry if this is old hat but this is probably the best game I've ever played. So, so fun, easy to play, hard to get good at, slow progression but it's fun no matter how low tier your tank is. This game is money. Except it's free so it's not money.

^^^^^ The thing that scares me about even trying that game is that the dudes I know that are into it are all 50 +. I have a few uncles that seem to always be playing that whenever I pop in to see them. Either Solitaire or Worlds of Tanks.

I am not at all sure you are with me. I have unlocked the Sherman and am grinding my way to the others. In case any of you give a ****, my handle is BudTugly.

I have to second those who recommended Borderlands 2. ****ing awesome game. I usually avoid FPS's like the plague, but this is in a league of it's own, much like half life 2 and the 1st Halo. I think it was the cell shaded graphics that put me off so much, I have never played a second of any game with cell shading, but figured wth and gave it a shot. Can't say enough good about it and I'm only 10 hours in.

Yup, this.

I avoided the first Borderlands for the exact same reasons you cited: because it was an FPS -- of which we have *far* too many -- and because of the graphical look. But my brother took the plunge a number of months after release, convinced me to buy it, and I've been addicted ever since. The cel-shaded graphics fit well with the game's overall cartoony sensibility, and while it is an FPS, you've never played an FPS like this. FWIW, I'm still playing B2 pretty hard a month after a release. Doesn't hurt that I've now got a new character (Mechromancer) and a new DLC campaign (Pirate's Booty) to work on. But even without the new content, it's a joy just to roll a fresh character and begin your loot gathering anew.

But while I'm here, your cel-shaded comment was very timely in reminding me of the imminent release of an HD remake of a great game: Okami, which will be released as Okami HD on the Playstation Network for $19.99 next week, Oct. 30. The original versions can be found on the PS2 and the Wii -- sadly, there is no X-Box or PC version.

In any case, Okami is hands-down the prettiest game I've ever played, and they did it with cel-shaded graphics. The gameplay, too, is inspired: it basically plays a lot like a Zelda game, except that you are a white wolf god named Amaterasu with a "celestial brush" at her disposal, with which she can freeze time and "paint" objects and attacks into the world. Want to blow a hole in something or attack your enemy? Draw a circle with a line through the top, and you've got a cherry bomb. Want to nullify your enemy's fire attack? Paint a few vertical lines and watch it rain. Want to change night into day, or day into night? Paint a sun or moon in the sky. How cool is that? Add on some good music, fun characters, a long adventure of well over 30 hours, and you've got one of the better games ever made. It's in my personal top five (and I've really played a hell of a lot of games, so that's saying something). As far as I'm concerned, anyone with a PS3 who has never played Okami should download Okami HD next week... it really is a steal at $20. I'll be getting it even though I still have the PS2 version... the HD re-release is just the excuse I need to play it all through again.

Here's a good article on Okami to check out that nicely sums up what a joy it is. I'll probably share some of my own thoughts next week after I've had a chance to see the updated graphics and fiddle with it all again.

COD Black Ops II is a well made COD game. I'm a PC gamer and this version seems much more PC friendly than MW3. Treyarch > Infinity Ward when it comes to the PC.

On another note, I played through XCOM EU a second time and I'm pretty disgusted with the game. I don't understand all the rave reviews. No replayability, I stepped up to the next higher difficulty for the second playthrough but the maps were so predictable the game was not challenging at all. Once you learn the points on the maps that trigger the AI you can set up perfectly and just destroy them. Shooting through walls, shooting through teammates or other enemies, it's just not well made.
Uninstalled.

How refreshing is it that we have seen nary a word uttered about Halo 4 on here? Die Halo, die.

Yeah, the original was great, but I kinda stopped caring after that.

Okami (discussed above) is as good as I remember it, BTW. I've been replaying it, ten hours in. Good times. I'll say again that anyone with a PS3 who never played the PS2 or Wii versions should give it a download. Totally worth it for the bargain bin price.

Looking forward to Hitman: Absolution, which is out in a week. It's the last game coming out this year that I care anything about.

Also, hilarious Dark Souls news here. God I love From Software. They're the only ones who would even contemplate doing such a thing, and the only ones who could get away with it with their fans still smiling. Funniest thing I've read all week.

lol thanks for sharing that, i did pick the pendant. never figured it out and never followed up after i moved on from the game. haven't followed this thread from the beginning so not sure if its been gone over, but the DS series is amazing. demons souls is probably the most fun i have ever had playing any game ever. i lost myself in that game for a good 3 months. over 350 hrs logged. i still haven't payed my sleep debt. if you havent played demon souls or dark souls, you really really really need the check them out. classics.

I'm not sure if I mentioned it here, but Demon's Souls was actually the reason I picked up a PS3 in the first place, on Black Friday 09 (which happened to be the first release of the PS3 slim model). I already knew I was going to love Demon's Souls because it looked like the spiritual successor to From Software's earlier series of dungeon crawlers, King's Field, which is my favorite series of games ever (you might enjoy King's Field: The Ancient City for PS2, antiquated as it is these days). Then I got a chance to play it over at my brother's place in late October, and there was just no way I could go without it any longer after playing those first few levels. It was just too damned good.

Of course now I play my PS3 almost exclusively and my X-Box is gathering dust... weird to think I've only had it for three years, seems like I've had it forever. But Demon's Souls was still the game that I used to justify the expense of another console. I just had to have it. The only other game that I can recall giving me quite that sense of jaw-dropping awe is Resident Evil 4... which forced me to buy a Gamecube. Ahh, good times.

I don't have the time or inclination to critique their whole list, but needless to say, Time doesn't really know crap about video games, and it shows. Where is Zelda: Ocarina of Time? Dark Souls? Castlevania: Symphony of the Night? Mega Man 2? Super Metroid? X-Com: UFO Defense? Resident Evil 4? To me, these are all mortal locks, not even worth discussing whether they should be in or not. Anyone with half a brain could see it. And yet they're not there. To be sure, in some cases they listed the first game in a series and not the sequels, but this is no excuse. The first game isn't always the best... in fact, with video games sequels tend to be better. A real list doesn't just pick the first game in a series as if all the games in it are equally good.

Not to mention that a lot of Time's readers don't seem very discerning, either. Over 60% of readers think that Demon's Souls, Okami, and Final Fantasy Tactics shouldn't have been on the list. Huh? Apparently over 60% of Time's readers don't know what a good game is.

Would anyone be interested if I did a LP thread for the new XCOM using JF forumers? I made a pretty great Jerry Sloan already.

I say go for it.

I wanted to make a video of XCOM set to the song Titanium by Sia, but I don't know the first thing about making videos and editing in sound and stuff.
