Big News Out of BYU??

CONAN - I have a few questions for you. I'm not trolling, I am truly interested in your answer.

1. Do you really believe that panic ensued solely because BYU looked like they may be packing up shop?

2. Do you think the reaction would have been the same if Utah were never going to the PAC 10, and BYU had, under those circumstances, announced it's intention to go independent?

3. Do you give any credence to the theory that the MWC panicked because they had already lost one of their flagship programs, and was unwilling to part with another in such rapid succession?

4. And lastly, do you think the MWC has always considered BYU the crown jewel of their collection?

You honestly think conan will answer any of those questions? It would require actual thought and sentences longer than 3-4 words. He's incapable of doing such.

Having lived in SoCal for several years I still have a number of friends down there that are huge PAC fans. In fact the company I work for is based in SoCal and every year the UCLA vs. USC game makes for an interesting week at work.

NONE of them even knew that Utah had gotten into the PAC until I mentioned it and to a person they all asked, "Utah? Really? Why? Are they any good?" LOL Several even mentioned how they thought the only big time school in the state of Utah was BYU, which they had all heard of. There were even a couple of people that associated Utah as BYU and mentioned BYU beating Cal last year. LOL

I'm sure Utah will turn a few heads once they start PAC play but don't delude yourself into thinking that as of now Utah has any name recognition outside of the MWC.
So because your friends don't know anything about college football that means nobody knows anything about Utah?

I have plenty of friends in SoCal myself, having also lived there, and they all knew about Utah possibly joining the PAC before it was official.

I'm going to have to call BS on your entire post. If somebody is a "huge" Pac10 fan, they would know damn well who Utah is. Utah has been in the the conversation for the Pac 10 for a few years now. I have a hunch that what your really talking about is a bunch of casual, front-running So-Cal fans who don't follow much of anything football related very closely and you're making them out to be huge fans who've never heard of Utah just to try and make a point. If they are such "HUGE" So-Cal fans, I wonder why they've never heard of Utah considering it wasn't all that long ago Carson Palmer and the Trojans lost to them in the Vegas Bowl. Did these "HUGE" fans forget to turn on their TV's that day?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Utah's name recognition is spectacular. In fact, BYU may be better known across the country but for the most part that's because of the fact that their the flagship school of the Mormon religion and if you don't love them, you love to hate them. In the scope of the last 6 to 10 years, Utah has by far been a more prominent national program than BYU. They've played in 2 big bowl games and have the 2nd longest bowl winning streak in NCAA history and during that time they've beat some pretty decent programs.

We can talk about what school is more recognizable across the country, or we can talk about what school that has done much more on the national stage as of late.......

The MWC conference would be just fine with 3 of the 4 big teams in it: Boise State, TCU and Utah or BYU. Take away the two latter teams and you not only eliminate two of the best schools in terms of football (and many other sports), you lose the entire state in terms of TV's. Now granted, the state of Utah ain't huge, but there's more people watching MWC football in Salt Lake and Provo than there are in Laramie, Fort Collins, etc..

This is exactly what I'm saying.

Hardcore Utah fans want to believe BYU doesn't matter, and hardcore BYU fans want to believe that Utah doesn't matter, but at the end of the day, the MWC needs one of them. It doesn't even matter which. IMO, they are of roughly equal value to the conference. As GE pointed out, they both represent a TV market that is important to the MWC. Utah has some recent BCS success, BYU has history and visibility, and a fan base that spreads out. Both teams have played well in recent seasons, and had success against major programs.

There really is no in between with you. That's not what I said at all. Just simply that Utah joining the PAC was only big to U of U fans. Fans of USC, UCLA, etc. could have cared less... and still don't.

So people that have season tickets to UCLA and USC are just casual fans that don't follow football now? LOL

It just wasn't that big a deal to USC fans. It was a minor bowl against a "small time" school. Why would it be memorable to a USC fan?

Call ******** all you like but trust me. It's not that big a deal for anyone outside of the U's little world.

I'm calling BS on you too. If these guys are hardcore fans, then they would be well aware of Utah joining the PAC. It was the biggest story in college football for like a month. And, again, I have lots of friends and family in SoCal and they all knew about Utah possibly joining the PAC before it was even official. Some of them aren't even college football fans and they still knew about it.

You can't sit here and say someone is a huge PAC 10 fan and at the same time say they not only didn't know who Cal just played in their bowl game, but they also didn't even hear about the biggest college football story of the year, and biggest PAC 10 story of the decade.

Anyone who knows anything about the PAC and BYU would already know darn well it wasn't, and will never be, BYU in the PAC.

Wow, I can't believe I'm agreeing with a moderator. Wait, is that a pig flying by outside my window? ;-)

LOL That's like me saying a person can't be a huge Jazz/NBA fan if they don't know every move/transaction that takes place in the Northwest division during the off season.

It's not like saying that at all. It's like saying you can't possibly be a huge Jazz fan if you're not aware of the biggest Jazz story of the decade- which just happened last month.

Hey guyz I been checkin lots of the boards for Pac 10 teams and EVERYBODY didnt even know what a Ute was and they sure didnt like it how they were gonna get them in there conferences and a guy at my work who goes to California alot said that he doubts that Utah will work out but that the byu football would of I think this all is a big mistake and now everybody is realising how big mistake it was to let Utah in over the cougars lol if texas hadnt stayed in the big 12 then Utah wouldnt of even been invited so Utah was just a last resort and it seems pretty desperate to me plus byu has an HD truck to film all the games.

You should lay off the paint chips.

No, You said that these "Huge" fans didn't even know who Utah was. Now you're saying that they don't really care that Utah is moving to the Pac 10.

Backpedal much?

See, to me this makes it sound like you're saying there's some "huge" Pac 10 fans out there that didn't even know Utah existed. You got called out (and rightfully so) by a couple of people for what utter and total crap that is, and now you're trying to save face by saying that it just wasn't a "big deal" for these "huge" fans to have Utah join their conference. It's not that I care if anybody in Cali knows who the Utes are. They're going to be finding out soon enough. It's just funny how you flat-out lied in an attempt to downgrade Utah.

Your friends are morons with no short term memory, or they really don't follow college football. Did they miss Utah beating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl two years ago?

There is no backpeddaling involved. I never said that everyone I talked had not heard of the Utah Utes. I said several people.

Quick. Without looking it up who won the 2007-08 Fiesta Bowl? You have no clue without looking. Just because you don't remember a game from 2 years ago doesn't make you a moron. You may have watched the game but unless you had a vested interest in either of the teams you probably are not going to have a lasting memory of the game or the teams involved.

If I called myself a college football fan I may not know who won a Fiesta Bowl 2 years ago, true. But if the team that won it was the biggest story in college football that year (2 years ago) and sparked a controversy that may well change the way the champion is determined, and 2 years later they were again the biggest story in college football when they changed conferences (to my team's conference- and only a month ago), I certainly would know who they were if someone said something about them. And I would absolutely know about them joining my team's conference a month after it was the biggest story in college football.

I really get tired of Salty, Conan, Marcus, Jazzman, etc hijacking threads.

Yeah, we all get that you guys know everything. Keep your pathetic hissy fits on facebook or send a PM. But it gets so old sifting through pages and pages of little one line zingers and quotes.

Ahhhh, Ute fans staying on tilt and continuing to get their panties in more of a bunch. What a beautiful thing!
