Gordon Hayward -> the next Pete Maravich?

May be? May be not? What am I missing?

...let's start with perhaps.....a brain? Look, NO ONE can be the next Pete Maravich, NO ONE! He was one of a kind! He was dedicated to the game of basketball and NO ONE in todays world of NBA basketball can ever duplicate such dedication...not to mention skill and brains!

Maravich deserved to be a Hall of Famer, but certainly was not one of the best ever. In fact, I'd say overall, factoring in defensive ability, Jerry Sloan was at least as good as Maravich, who also was probably the biggest gunner in college basketball history

<<<IAWTP.

Maravich had ok stats: 24 pts/game on 44% shooting. But not great. He certainly was flashy, but I'm not sure he made his teams a whole lot better. I'd compare him to Iverson in that respect.

....did you actually see Maravich play? He could do things with a basketball within the framework of a game.......unknown in the basketball world....and haven't been seen since! Red Arbauch was quoted as saying Maravich was the most talented offensive player the game has ever seen! Now, that being said, he did have defensive deficiencies.....but we're talking a one of a kind talent here and to compare him to Iverson or anyone in the history of the NBA in connection with his offensive skills and basketball smarts....well there just isn't anyone out there to compare him to!

Yeah, I saw him play on television, being guarded by guys six inches shorter and jacking up 50 shots and making about one-third of them. Yeah, he was flashy, but so was Jayson Williams when he came into the NBA. Not to say that JWill was as good, but Maravich in my book is much overrated, when you consider his all-around game.

Of course everyone's "one of a kind" if you put it that way .. there's only one of you and one of me (duh!!)

but that's not the point... I'm merely saying is it possible that Hayward could become a similar player and achieve great things given their skill set, attributes and basketball IQ ... is all.

If that's Maravich's real stats then Hayward could beat that easily or at least it's not out of the realm of possibility..

Pistol Pete really had just 7 full-time seasons in the league before his body started breaking down. My one regret is that I wasn't much of an NBA fan in the early 70's. I followed the ABA and went to quite a few Utah Stars' games when I was a boy. Wish I had followed both leagues, though. While I remember the great ABA players, like Zelmo Beaty, Artis Gilmore, George Gervin, Dr. J, Rick Barry, Dan Issel, Ron Boone, etc., I missed out on seeing some of the truly great NBA players in their prime or at the end of their careers.

How good were those Utah Stars back in the days? Well, they had four players named to the all-time ABA team: Beatty, Boone, Willie Wise and Jimmy Jones. Well, five if you also count the kid out of HS who played on the Stars the year the team went under...Moses Malone.

Oh yeah, and the Stars won 1 championship and had the highest winning percentage if you count only the years in Utah (the frnachise was previously in Anaheim and Los Angeles). Unfortunately, outside of that one season, they had trouble beating the Pacers and then Dr J's Nets.

BTW, Booner was my favorite player. That's why I've always given him a pass in terms of broadcasting.

Does anyone think may be Hayward has the potential to become our new Pistol Pete Maravich?

- both has the vision in terms of passing and making plays
- both has similar shooting form
- Hayward is slightly taller at 6'8 compared to Pete's 6'5
- Hayward is slightly heavier at 207lbs compared to Pete's 200lbs
- both are skilled with the ball (Hayward played PG when he was younger and only 5'4)
- lastly... Hayward will now be wearing the same vintage Jazz uniform!

Reported for circumventing the profanity filter and egregious abuse of the English language.

BTW, I'm just joking about the "reported" part.

....lighten up Laker-slapper! I already rode his butt pretty good on this one....but he was really only saying that is it "possible" Heyward could have a similar basketball IQ, especially since Heyward went to Butler and "Majored" in, well, basketball! He didn't mean Heyward would become the basketball legend that Maravich became or was! At least we hope not!!!

Its sad that people cant post idea's with out being bombasted. Of course its a long shot for Haywad to ever develop in to an All-Star but if he was then I agree he would probably be a mix of Shane Battier and Pistol Pete.
The people on this board that are giving you a hard time are the same people that would have counted out Michael Redd, Carlos Boozer and Gilbert Arena's when they were playing well. Dont be an @ssclown have an open mind please.
