What's new

Where is that pit bull thread when I need it?

one thing to be nipped, another thing to be mauled or killed.

I'll have to look it up but any dog that weighs more than 45 pound is completely capable of killing an adult person. Dogs that weigh 80 pounds or more are capable of draggin a human down to the ground, regardless of breed. "Pit Bull's" are different mostly because of their tenacity and willing to endure pain to keep fighting.

I don't have the time to read this entire thread, so I don't know if anyone has linked to this: https://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/20...-man-mauled-to-death-by-his-own-pit-bull?lite.

I understand the argument saying that the danger of pitbulls depends on upbringing and training, but I do not think you discount the grossly disproportionate share of serious dog attacks done by pitbulls. It's not only the relative frequency of attacks but also their relative lethality. Pitbulls were bred to fight and be agressive, I am skeptical that you can completely domesticate these traits away--in some pitbulls, yes, but in all of them, no.

It's a tough call for me, but I come down on the side of regulating their ownership and/or public access.

It really comes down to whether or not the dog has been weaponized.

I understand, but that's what I'm saying, I am skeptical that it ONLY comes down to that. I'm inclined to believe that there's something there also about how the dogs have been bred over time and that what their 'instincts' are that we try to domesticate away.

You may be right, and I'm willing to change my mind, but I'm skeptical.

For what it's worth, I agree with you. I was being sarcastic and making fun of another poster's argument. If you haven't read through the thread, you really should. There's some great commedy in it.

Whoops, sorry. Yep, I should probably read a bit more.

I hate being around a strange doberman or rottweiler..
Don't have much personal direct experience with pitbulls, but I think I know people that have badly attacked by them, altho I never saw the dogs myself to verify the ID.
I'm not crazy about being around any big dog that does not know me, but those are the ones I would like to see less off.

Pit Bulls were bread to fight other dogs. They also were bread to have no human aggression what so ever. If a pit showed signs of aggression towards humans they were put down. They had to be sure when in the ring with two dogs trying to kill each other that the dogs would not hurt the handlers or officials. So yes, pits are extremely strong and their jaw strength is 3 times that of any other breed. But they are some of the most loyal, well behaved dogs you'll ever see. They are terrible guard dogs, they'll just lick you to death. They were Americas original breed and once a sign of strength.

Problem with pits is that if something does go wrong, wether due to a bad owner or otherwise, it's going to happen fast and it's going to be brutal. Also, when the media hear's of a pit attack it's headline news. If a lab attacks someone they could care less and you'd never hear about it.

It's on the owner to be sure their dog is well trained and socialized. I've been around them my whole life and find them to be the sweetest dogs out there. True champions.

I could go on and on. Basically, they are amazing dogs. But they are extremely powerful and you better be a responsible owner.

Pits are beautiful animals. I would never have a pit around my daughter though, if I was single I'd probably have one, but there's always the 1% chance something goes wrong and boom your daughters dead. Its not worth the risk. The same can be said for other dogs though, I wouldn't own a rott or an akita either. I'll stick with persian cats and golden retrievers.

I have had far more problems with german shepards and dobbermans in my life than pit bulls.
