Sheridan: Spurs front-runner to land Jefferson

from the Spurs board

"I don't want Al. He's not a warrior at all and is weak on defense. He's the same guy that said "we can't beat them" about the spurs after game THREE of our series last year. That's weak sauce. Even if you think it's true, as the leader of a team you can't come out and say that in public whole the series is going on. As tdmvpdpoy would say he's a ******"

"Al Jefferson may be a far better offensive player than Splitter, but he's also a far worse defender. Giving up Splitter, under any circumstances, is too costly for the Spurs. Besides, Pop has willed and commanded this team be better defensively - and they have. I don't know why he would jepoardize that now. Therefore to Sheridan's rumor, I say "bah humbug".

"The Jazz boards are filled with non-stop hate for Al Jefferson...."

Also, throw in Tomic's rights. Spurs love Euro's, so it's possible that Tomic is enough to sweeten a deal in our favor.

For me, the only way I'd do a trade if Splitter is part of it. Just no to Blair. We have enough good/mediocre players at the 2/3 that Green doesn't interest me anymore.

But from reading what Spurs fans say, they're not happy about having Splitter mentioned as the exchange for Jefferson. He's too important to their defense. So there's likely no way a trade like this would ever go down.

I'm still leaning toward keeping rights on Tomic. I'd be excited to see what a Favors/Splitter/Kanter/Tomic frontline could do going forward. Here's a couple of interesting recent articles (though who knows how accurate?):

"I wonder if any of you guys watched the Jazz/Spurs series.

He was the reason why the Jazz was swept 4-0. He is one of the worse defensive BIG men in the NBA. Every team running a P&R will have an Avenue to work when Jefferson is out there. "

I dont believe for one second they would part with Splitter for Jefferson. Id take the green and a 1st the Spurs dude is speaking of. A few young assests are we can really hope for because MEGATRADE is too freaking stupid to trade players when they may have value Ie...When they are not pending FA.

Spurs are not giving Jazz a starter.
No Leonard or Splitter.
Mills, Jackson, Blair are completely expendable.
Jefferson would be second unit firepower while resting starters.
No risk for Spurs.
If he stinks it up, Duncan, Splitter go right back in.
Everybody is saying addition by subtraction with Jefferson.
Get rid of Jefferson at all costs.
Spurs know this.
Jazz at least get some players back.

What's up Richie.

Your comment got buried because there is a waiting period for new posters. All because this dude porn bombed us one beautiful sunday afternoon.

To tell you the truth. I'm not interested in any of the players being mentioned. I'd rather sell Al for a nice pick.So ya, I'd probably rather have the pick and green over Splitter. But none of those players excite me. But we are ready for the Favors era to begin, so we just want Al gone. So any deal at this point would be good. I would think that we should be able to get more for Al then just scraps though.

I'd do this. Having three 1sts would be a great luxury. What would be even greater would be getting rid of Al because, well he sucks, and it would finally open up the time Favors and Kanter need.

I think it's a bit unfair to call lump Green in with 'scraps' (although there are a few Spurs fans who would disagree with me) as the guy has great size for the 2, can hit the 3 and defend. Do the Jazz need anyone at the 2 though? I don't watch you guys much, I'm assuming Hayward plays 3?

I understand you'd be looking for picks, but do you think you are likely to get much more than Green + 30th for him? It is a gamble for anyone to trade for an expiring, would a team be willing to give up a lottery pick for him?

I like a core of Green/Hayward/Favors/Kanter/Millsap going forward, all young and talented. Would really need a quality point guard to put it all together.

Everything San Antonio touches turns to gold...don't be surprised if Big Al averages 24 and 12 and wins defensive player of the year in a Spurs uniform.

Hey Jazz fans, Spurs fan here, saw this story so came to get your opinions.

First of all, Splitter is a restricted free agent this year so I suspect if this trade doesn't happen, the Spurs will match almost any deal for him.

Secondly, I'm not sure the Spurs do this deal with Tiago. We are finally starting to see good results with him in the starting line up and he is pretty much our only decent big when Duncan is resting.

However, I do think a player like Danny Green would be on the trade block. Guy is young, capable defender and can hit 3s. Would a deal of Green + Mills + Jackson (for salary) + 2013 1st rounder for Al Jeff be enough for the Jazz?

sure, ok, what ever you want. I would love for him to be your problem, because at the end of the day that means he's not our problem. Hell I'd throw in a draft pick myself if it would insure that you guys would take him off our hands. When he's on, Al is near impossible to stop in the low post. However that doesn't happen much. You will come to think your offense will change when he's in the game. He doesn't do pick'n roll at all, he will stop ball movement, he won't pass out of double teams, and never gets to the foul line, causing him to take 17 shots just to reach 15 points. After half a season Pops may decide to retire and Parker demand a trade, while at the same time start a bromance with ummmmmm Blair, and make you wonder if you even want to be a spurs fan as long as Al is there.

That's what the experts said about us, then Al came along. Half a season later Sloan calls it quits and we trade Deron even before he has a chance to demand a trade.

A). The Jazz have 15 man roster, we would have too add two players to that deal.
B). KOC has stated multiple times he would only deal Al if it helped the team long-term, as in, he is not interested in just dumping him for players he isn't interested in long-term.

Nothing to argue against here. Oh well, we will have to settle for Al's contract expiring at years end, and hope KOC isn't considering bringing him back.

Well, Spurs would pretty much be a sure fire Finals team. Al and Timmy front court will beat the Thunder. SO I guess its a good deal. Of course if the Spurs didnt go on to win the title, everyone here will say its because Al is a loser :D

Splitter would help us I believe and it frees up minutes ( I WOULD HOPE) for our young bigs.
I would still much rather trade Sap, but if I was the Spurs I would much rather have Al too.

Phil Johnson and Spence Checketts talking about this on 1280 now....interesting. Basically repeating what scorpjazz said. Makes Spurs instant contender for one more run....gives jazz a much needed point guard with an interesting talent in Splitter....frees up minutes for youth.

Wonder if Jefferson has heard this rumor.
