The Gordon Hayward mistake has screwed the Jazz for years to come

Look I'd rather have George too, but you can't say Hayward was a 'huge mistake'. He's pretty good in his own right. It's not like this was the #1 overall pick, #9 is no sure thing.

I used to hate O'Connor for every first round pick he made since he was drafting ( except Koufos as I really thought he was a steal at 23), but kind of gave up on it. Yeah it would be nice to have Parker or Arenas, CP3, Boozer, Big Al, Josh Smith, Rondo, George, Leonard, Valanciunas drafted instead of what O'Connor got us, but nothing can be done or changed so whatever.... just enjoy what we got and hope for the best.

So since you hate every first round pick KOC had made, you predicted all of the names above that you put in order would be a better pick (except JV)? WOW you are a basketball genius.

You can't seriously believe this. Go back and look at the draft thread and realize that most of the guys we were clamoring for would have been significantly worse than Hayward. I'd rather have George, but it could have been SO much worse.

Plus, if you really want to do this you can go back every single draft and do the exact same thing. If any team drafted perfectly, they'd win every year.

Hayward and George were the only two guys available at the time who have done much of anything in the NBA. Sure, George is an all-star. But Hayward is a pretty good all-around player. Look at their stats a bit closer. Paul's are a lot higher because he averages 38 mins per game; Hayward only 27. Do you think Hayward could score a couple more baskets, and get a couple more assists if he were to play an additional 11 mins.? If so, the only stat where George has the clear advantage is rebounding.

I'd say KOC did a pretty good job in drafting Gordon, especially when the choices - besides George - were Aldrich, Henry, Babbitt, Sanders, Patterson, Davis, etc. And there were quite a few misses in front of the Jazz, such as Aminu, Udoh and Johnson. I won't go through the entire draft, but the Jazz would have been successful taking Hayward, George, Bledsoe or Landry Fields. Perhaps I missed a name or two, but that's not a whole lot of talent for picks 9 through the end of the draft. Kudos to KOC for getting one of the FEW good players where he drafted.

I guarantee that if you could forecast all those names BEFORE the fact, some NBA team would be paying you a couple million to be their GM. Easy to be an armchair QB. Let's go back and see what other teams also missed on the players you mentioned.

How about mentioning how KOC only liked 2 PG's in the draft and moved up from #6 to #3 to grab Deron instead of staying put and likely taking Felton? How about taking a FA risk on Boozer instead of going with the more established Kenyon Martin?

Tell you what. For the next 3 years, let's track who you pick in the draft for the Jazz and compare against who they actually get. If your picks, overall, are substantially better, I'll give you a prize.

I am not saying I wanted all those players before draft - it just that some turned out to be so much better then what Jazz picked that it is kind of sad... I can tell I wanted Boozer, Arenas, Leonard and JV instead of Borchardt, Lopez, Burks and Kanter.

sounds like fun game to play, how about you do it for every jazzfanz poster here? And the one with best "mock" draft wins that prize?

If Hayward were on that Pacers team he would have been an allstar as well. I'd take Hayward over George. But would not be dissappointed if we had taken George instead.

MoTown, George's huge value comes on defense. I actually think Hayward is a vastly superior offensive player in our system. I'm on your side here though, pretending like Hayward wasn't a solid (if not perfect) pick is just intellectually dishonest.

You missed his point. It's easy to pick who should have been picked after the draft. Picking Hayward before that draft turned out to be brilliant. He could have missed so easily and this board was pissed when they took him. If we had taken the players most people wanted we would be soooo much worse off then we are right now.

No, I did not predicted it. Anytime KOC drafted somebody in first round to me it looked like he left better players available. I used to have high hopes for those picks ( like Humphries, Snyder, Lopez) as they where pimped hardly in local media and then left disappointed as some of them where gone even before their rookie deals were over - isn't that a sure sign of failure or admision of defeat? It is like KOC is saying - look son, we drafted you but since you suck we will trade you after 1-2 years or expose you in expansion draft like they did with Pavlovic. See how many rookies O'Connor drafted in 1 round got their rookie deals extended - Deron is the only one in 10 years of KOC drafting and 10 of them where gone. He did much better in second round though and finding Millsap and M.Wiliams are certainly his best drafts ever.

Why can't you guys just relax and respectfully disagree? You don't need to cry and throw a fit if someone has a different opinion than you.

You know my style better than that. This isn't an opinion. This is pathetic trolling.

Only in Utah would skin color be an issue when it comes to drafting and it was when the Jazz drafted Gordon Hayward (#9) one pick before NBA all-star Paul George (#10).

They play the same positions. SG and SF.

George was/is bigger, taller, longer, more skilled, more athletic and more talented.

Hayward looks like a Mormon choir boy.

Easy choice for the Jazz. You go with the Mormon choir boy.

3 years later...

One player becomes an NBA all-star. The other player is the definition of NBA mediocrity.

Doooooood. You suck. Also, Hayward is very good. And Paul George was shorter than hayseed at draft time. Plus Hayward had just had a great run in the tourney. George was not as impressive before he grew four inches out of nowhere

...yeah, but the Jazz had to take into consideration "character!" You don't know if George is going to get busted for drugs, domestic violence or even die from tattoo ink poisoning!

True dat. But they better have injury insurance for Gordon. He's likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome from playing so many video games, thus ending his basketball career.
