Millsap for Bledsoe?

If the Jazz take Caron Butler and Eric Bledsoe and give them Millsap, that helps the Clips get $11 - $12 million under the cap this summer. They make one more small trade, and they can re-up CP, plus recruit another FA at a near-max deal.

It's win-win for the Clippers, unless Butler and Bledsoe are more important to them. Butler's not a big deal for them. He gets hot once every 4 or 5 games. His value took a hit when he got injured with the Mavs.

Butler, Odom, and Bledsoe for Pierce and Barbosa. The Clippers get a big upgrade at the small forward position and replace Bledsoe with Barbosa. Or Bradley for that matter. The Celts get a solid young piece in Bledsoe and will have 16M off the books come summer. Maybe the Celts get a 1st rounder too.

I don't think the Celtics want to move Pierce for Butler, Odom and Bledsoe. That's close to sacrilege. The only guy that matters in that trade is Bledsoe and it creates tension with Rondo. There might be a 3-way scenario with Al Jefferson or Josh Smith, but the Hawks aren't going to take that Clips package for Josh. I'm not sure the Jazz would even move Al for Bledsoe/Odom. Odom is a real team killer when he's not in LA.

Ok, but are they willing to trade Butler? I would assume we would have to give them Carroll so they could retain some wing depth. They would have to start Matt Barnes at SF, which would make their wings even weaker.

I would imagine trading Butler would make Paul slightly upset.

Not if Paul sees Millsap and the other SFs (Barnes, Grant Hill) as adequate replacements. It means CP re-signs, and the Clips get a hot FA this summer. It works both short and long-term. I think the Clips are just holding out to see if they can get a better player---like Dwight Howard.

But I would be surprised if the Lakers would suffer the indignity of moving Dwight to the other locker room for DeAndre/Bledsoe/Odom, especially because they almost got Chris Paul in the first place.

I think the Clippers are looking for a better deal than Paul Millsap, and it's hard to come by. I think they want cap room this summer as much as they want a player for the stretch-run.

I suppose the Clips' front office can ask CP if Paul Pierce is the guy he wants, but it's an all-or-nothing play, since PP probably ends the Clips' flexibility.

I think any team acquiring LO is doing so strictly for filler reasons. He'd almost certainly be bought out or Raja'd.

Where are they getting the cap space for that?
To clarify, even if the Clips are able to move Butler and Bledsoe, renounce all their free agents except for Chris Paul, and go into the summer with only Blake, DeAndre and Crawford under contract, this is their cap situation:

Chris Paul (cap hold): $18 668 430.9
Blake Griffin: $13 668 750
DeAndre Jordan: $10 986 550
Jamal Crawford: $5 225 000
Incomplete Roster Charge: $3 921 440 ($490 180 * 8)

Total: $52 470 170.9 (not including the salary of the Clips 1st round pick(s))

Since the cap has been stuck on the minimum guaranteed the last two years (that is, the 11/12 and 12/13 cap were set at the same level as the 10/11 cap), there's no guarantee the cap goes up (roughly 4.5% increases in BRI over the 3 years between the summer of '10 and '13 would leave the cap unchanged). If it is the same, the Clips only have about $8mm of cap space plus whatever Chris Paul leaves on the table (plus the roster charge for one player) to sign a "hot FA" this summer. They'd have to renounce their exceptions to use that cap space, and would have to sign minimum salary players to fill their roster.

They can go over the cap to re-sign CP though can't they? So they'd basically sign a FA, and then CP. That's how it used to work. With Odom, Billups, Barnes and a couple young guys expiring, plus Bledsoe and Butler being moved, they're more flexible this summer than they were last summer. They'd re-up their young players and take vets on minimum contracts--same strategy as Miami basically.

That is not how it works or used to work. Free agents count against the cap until they are signed or renounced (cap holds differ depending on how much they made in their last season before becoming free agents).

Today's STRONG performance by the Jazz VS GSW will make it hard for KOC to pull the trigger on this trade.

Millsap & Big Al playing like All Stars... with Burks growing before our EYESSSSSSS...

No, it makes it easy. Young guys are ready to go!

The defensive potential of this team if we can acquire Bledsoe is absurd.

Gotto admit Millsap was a BIG part of the win tonight though. Also forget about adding Burks to the trade - he's about to break out!

I think Millsap and our pick gets it done easily. Possibly even without a pick. I like Millsap a lot as well, but Bledsoe would be a monstrous upgrade over Tinsley, bigger than the difference between Favors and Millsap IMO.

Yep Favors' ready to go.

I hope KOC and Lindsey have the courage to pull the trigger.

I think the reason a trade has not been made yet is that the clips want swine to take deandre off their hands. I bet they are considering big al for deandre and Bledsoe. Hopefully we can make that happen and keep millsap. Put deandre on the block this summer. Someone will take him.

The thing that held up the Celtics trade is that Boston wanted DeAndre. The Clippers aren't trading Jordan.
