What's new

If we lose to Charlotte tonight...

It's really frustrating to me how much effort has been dumped into this fantasy of Favors becoming a low-post player instead of pursuing more natural AND MORE USEFUL ability like face-up scoring and PnR (although not having a reliable distributor hurts greatly there).

In my mind, you reserve post scoring for mismatches or if you've got a player with serious ability (or blooming potential in that regard). But that's a tangent.

I agree that jazzfanz have wasted alot of time and energy with the fantasy that is Favors post up game. But I don't think that Favors or the Jazz have spent much time or energy on it. Favors has yet to work out with a legitimate low post scorer other than 'up and under Al', and Favors abilities don't match that game at all. Even in College Favors was told to be a weakside rebounder and let Gnai Lawai (sp?) do the offense. Has he ever been taught?

I don't know how much natural offence ability Favors has, which is sad given his athletic abilities. He should be the top hand of a mismatch almost every game he plays in, but a lack training or skills leaves him overmatched in the post by Byron Mullens. So get him off the post they say, well sadly he doesn't do much better there. Even in the PnRm tonight he just plowed over Mullens on a clear offensive foul. And on his face ups he frequently travels. Favors is going to have to work very hard to just average 15 ppg in the league.

The best hope for him is to get him as close to the basket as possible and get him the ball. Not necessarily a back to the basket post move, but some early positioning as he starts down the court and the Jazz set the offense. Karl was masterful in his 88-94 years at beating people by positioning himself early. Of course Stockton had teriffic sense of timing to know when the pass should be made, but other Jazz players learned, they picked up the timing from him --so it can be taught and learned. Anyway Karl was the best at it, and it makes me crazy to see the openings for the same scoring opportunities and the current Jazz players don't even know where to look for them. The best part was that it was a quick score before the defense got set, it was fun to watch and frequently ended in a dunk or exciting lay-up. No foot work, or holding the ball, or pounding the ball into the timbers was needed. That is where Derrick Favors can do his work, his athletic ability would be highlighted and Jazz Fans would be ooing and ahhing. Its an inside scoring play early in the shot clock that is not a post up. And let me ramble on a bit more. If the Jazz could even have one of their staff guys go through a 200 games or so from the 88-94 seasons they would have hours of film for these young post players to watch and learn how to run the floor and where to run too, and the gaurds and wings would see where to look, and when to make the pass.

So in review, I agree with you that Favors is probably never going to be doing the dream shake Hakeem Style. And I will be pleased if he never learns a wheezy, but I'm saying that he could be a threat to score inside if the Jazz could remember their own history and somehow remember that the Jazz didn't always run the Flex and Jerry was once very satisfied with Karl getting early scores outside of the offense and it wasn't until Jerry got older and more rigid that he insisted that a 24 second violation was prefered to making a play. And futhermore, scoring in the paint is not only accomplished by a post up that happens after the Jazz wait for the defense to set, but it can be accomplished by smart positioning and making a pass while everyone is 'setting-up'.

thank you and good night.

I love reading lotto team game threads.

Most enjoyable game I've watched since the 2009/10 season.

I can only hope Jefferson's ankle doesn't heal until his contract is up.

Favors should pattern his game after Blake Griffin or Amare. P&R, Dunk dunk dunk and shoot jumpers.

Kanter? Now he's a guy that you can run your low post offense through.

Nice game. But kinda disappointed in the bonehead performance from favors. Fouled out in just 21 mins of play. It was a good opportunity for him to shine. Looks like only Kanter got the memo.
Favors had a bigger positive impact on this game due to his defense.
than al had all year

This one is slightly more special than the Toronto game for me, just because Kanter had a better game than any Jefferson has ever had with the Jazz.

hahaha i like the toronto game a bit better. that was a a more fun offensive game.
more passing(maybe cus mo williams was in it and millsap)

this one was a defensive masterpeace.
in the playoff i would prefer this game rather than the toronto game so to speak

What's really exciting about our core 4 is that they are an ELITE defensive group. It's been so long since the Jazz have had an elite defense - I almost find that more fun to watch than an elite offense.

This game looked to be the game I looked the least forward to, and I watch them all. Until I found out both Al and Sap were injured. Then it became interesting.

And Kanter did not disappoint in the least. What's depressing is knowing he'll be put in his "rightful" place once Al and Sap get back.

You are so right nate. With Big Al and Sap starting it would have been very ho hum. Glad we got to see a glimpse of the future tonight.
It's too bad we have to wait for it.

I was so excited i went down to the arena, bought 5th row seats off a scalper, and just drooled all night. it was awesome.

I don't really care about positions either, per se. But it's hard to keep a player in a rotation if they can't really guard anybody.

You could say that about half the guys on the team. Almost every player on the Jazz struggle with certain types of players. Millsap can't guard guys taller than him and he can't guard SF quicker than him. Jefferson is a horrible defender for the most part. Favor struggles with guarding guys away from the basket. Kanter isn't a great shot blocker. Jeremy's effort alone is the reason why he should play over Marvin. Yes he will struggle against bigger guys but his ability to jump and block shots helps him over come the disadvantage of his weight.

Remember no one is advocating starting Jeremy but against backups Jeremy can be a contributing role player. I have no doubt he could produce more than Marvin. Start Carrolle and have Jeremy come off the bench either as a backup PF or SF depending on the match up. Trade Marvin next year or tell his agent that he is third on the depth chart so he is more incline to leave.

Utah: still the place where square pegs are forced into round holes. Ty learned it all from Ol' Jer donchya know. All bigs must be another Karl Malone.

The other part of this is if you have Kanter and Favors playing together do you want them both to be low post guys? I like the idea someone else posted that Fav should play it more like Amare.

Players noticed last nights win had a different feel to it.

Great win tonight...total team effort...big turk was a monster tonight #wow

Burks looks like he could be pretty dang good at the pnr. The kid has worked on his shot, his ball handling looks better from just two weeks ago, and his passes are pretty good. Loved watching that game! It's staying on the DVR for off season boredom.
