I roofed Larry H. Miller's house about 9 years ago. He rarly came out,but Gail was the nicest person i've ever met. Not even an exageration she was just awesome. Larry gave us all free movie passes and let our company use one of his theatres all by ourselves as a thank you as well. Good family.
My big story is meeting Karl Malone at a Provo McDonalds 87 or 88. We saw on the marquee outside that Karl was going to be there on a certain day.
We thought it would be crowded, and probably wouldn't go. For some reason we talked ourselves into going. Before he arrived there was a entry box, and it said there was going
to be lots of prizes. We entered probably 30 times. Using all combinations of our first and last names, my friend's brothers names, etc. It was me, my mom, and my best friend.
We got there early, but it's hard to remember now how early. Probably 30 minutes. I remember we were talking about how it was getting close to
his listed arrival time that NO ONE WAS THERE. The time came, and here comes Karl. As I recall now there was another guy, and his son, and that was it.
(as far as people who were obviously there to see Karl). So Malone comes in, and it's just sort of strange. He ends up sitting with us. We gave him
an article with a picture for him to sign. The article was something like "LA, and NYC are too fast for me, SLC is my speed". Something like that.
He sat, and read the article. Yes, I know what you are thinking, Karl can read? He was very intent, and obviously very into what it said. Either that or it was more difficult to
read that he led on. After he was done, he signed it, and gave it back. He was very serious, but relaxed. At this point it became really strange.
There was no one there. This grand event was empty. It's Karl sitting at a table next to us, and silence. My family started asked him questions
to fill in the silence. "What's your favorite food"? "I dunno, Burgers I guess" was the one I'll never forget. This went on for a good 10 minutes before finally the manager said ok it's time
to give out the prizes. Karl will you do the drawing. Karl stands up, and is handed the first winner. It's me! We won a Tshirt, Jazz hat or something!.
Next winner, it's my friend Ty! He won some other sort of item. Then our fake names started coming up....I don't recall when or how we made our exit,
but we did at some point soon after leave. We realized we were about to have our stupid fake names called over and over. We left Karl, and the empty
Mcdonalds never knowing how it ended.
Years later you heard about Karl doing a signing at a mall and having lines wrapped around forever. This was so early on that Karl wasn't the big
star he was to be. Thank you Karl for that moment. Answering our questions, and probably calling out of fake names for the next 20
minutes after we left the store.
