What's new

Have you ever met a Jazz Player?

Have you ever met a Jazz player? What were they like? Past or present, hell, even the coaching staff. Give us the dirt!

One time I was at Barnes and Noble at the Gateway and Frank Layden and his wife came in to grab a coffee and a bagel. Frank was just dressed in slacks and a striped polo with some loafers and his wife was in a fur coat and some big ole sunglasses, she almost looked like a movie star from the 30's. Anyway, they leave but forget one of their bags. My dad grabs the bag to run it out to them but Frank comes back, my dad gives him the bag, and Frank says "I'm gettin' old!" then proceeds to talk to my dad for a bit, just small talk. He was super nice.

I met Jeff Hornacek once. He came to my Aunt's work for some meet and greet kind of thing. I was only about 10 so I don't remember why he exactly came, but he gave me an autographed basketball and talked to me for a second. I was living in Portland at the time and he said he was proud of me for being a Jazz fan while living in Oregon. Super nice guy

I met Kirilenko at the airport back in 2002. He was there with his wife, and I think they were picking up some family flying in for the winter olympics. He was a really cool guy. He walked all the way over the the check in tables to find a pen and sign an autograph.

I have met dee brown, carlos boozer, john crotty, enes kanter, and blue edwards.

I also had a nice conversation with jerry sloan while in the fanzz store underneath the delta center.

Yep. Worked on Karl Malone's house when he was building it. Karl was nice, liked to talk to the workers and was generally a nice guy. His wife made lunch for everybody working on their home once a week.

My wife also met Stockton and Hornacek. They went to the same church as her. She did not like Stockton said he was an ***. But Hornacek was okay.

Lucky... -jealousface-

I met Karl a couple of times. Even sat and had lunch with him once. Super nice guy that liked to talk about hunting and fishing mostly.

I briefly met Eaton and Stockton but didn't have much interaction with either.

I met Jerry Sloan, his new wife, and her son at the Olive Garden at about 114th south and Bangerter in South Jordan. He was incredibly quiet, but his wife was clearly not lacking in confidence.

During the 1987/88 season Larry Miller, Karl Malone, and Mark Eaton were at Indian Hills Middle School in Sandy. Some publicity thing with the press, but I met them near the auditorium. I think they chose that school because Larry's daughter attended it. She had MASSIVE issues.

I went to an autograph signing a couple years later also in Sandy off 13th East in a store by where Smith's is now. Karl Malone was to be there for 2 hours. He showed up an hour and a half late, stayed for 10-15 minutes and then walked out even though there was a long line down the strip mall as big as any Black Friday sale.

I saw Memo a few years ago at the Gateway mall in Salt Lake. He was very nice.

Any other ones that I met were in large Junior Jazz type events.

I had heart surgery as a young boy when I was 3 at Primary's. The entire 1987 Jazz team visitied me. I have all their autographs, from Sloan to Malone to the Jazz bear. Probabaly one of my earliest memories.

My dad also did some business with Antoine Carr. He had a flooring company in Utah. I met him a few times.

When I was 16 I sold a basketball to Jeff Hornacek and his two sons while working at Champ Sports in the old Cottonwood Mall.

I roofed Larry H. Miller's house about 9 years ago. He rarly came out,but Gail was the nicest person i've ever met. Not even an exageration she was just awesome. Larry gave us all free movie passes and let our company use one of his theatres all by ourselves as a thank you as well. Good family.

I used to groom Bryon Russell's two dogs, Rottweilers, and Adam Keefe's dog, a Bullmastiff. B-Russ (not saying he's a bad dude) but came off as kinda thuggish always coming into the store with a 4 man entourage, and didn't converse much with us like he just wanted to get out of there as fast as possible. Keefe was a quiet guy but polite

Also ran into Eaton at the high school with my bro's and friends when I was 12 or so years old. Was there to play some basketball. That is one cool guy, he stayed for a half hour or so talking to us and shooting baskets with us. Dude can't shoot lol. He did a lot of joking about how he could lead the jazz in scoring, but that Malone shot too much and Stockton never passed him the ball or something like that.

It was on a Saturday in summer time I think.

As a missionary, I taught Antoine Carr's whole family in wichita. His mom, two of his brothers and one of his sisters all live under the same roof. They ended up joining th church and as a result, I Got to meet Antoine Carr. He was a cool dude. Nice guy but not interested in the church. ha.
I also Shot Baskets with Thurl Baily when he came to my Middle School. He gave me some friendly tips on my form.

Karl Malone- Got to go in the Locker Room when I was little, Karl gave me his shoes that he wore during the game and talked with me for awhile. Was literally my dream come true at that age.

John Stockton- When I was in the locker room right after Karl had just given me his game shoes and hung out for about 15 minutes I asked Stockton to sign a basketball card for me. Nope. lol

Paul Millsap
- Saw him at the huka bar. Talked to him for like 10 minutes. Was a totally normal dude. It was his 2nd year in the league I think. He was just down to hang out.

Carlos Boozer- Ran into him at AT&T in SLC. Was a dbag.

Jeff Hornacek- Saw him at at Snowbird with his family.

Bryon Russell- Saw him at Smiths his rookie year.

Blue Edwards- My family ate in the booth across from him at Chilis once when I was little.

Matt Harpring- ended up right behind him and his wife going through Airport Security.

Enes Kanter- Talked to him a couple times at Utes games this year. Cool guy, obviously.

Al Jefferson- Saw him at a Bees game right after he was traded here. I fist bumped him.

Thurl Bailey- Too many freaking times to count. Stop following me Big T.

Jeremy Evans- Talked to him at Fashion Place mall right after he got drafted. I think I was one of, if not the first person to recognize him. He was with his Grandpa and you could tell his Grandpa was so excited/proud that someone recognized Jeremy.

Prolly more.

Was the Jazz bear even around in 1987?

My big story is meeting Karl Malone at a Provo McDonalds 87 or 88. We saw on the marquee outside that Karl was going to be there on a certain day.
We thought it would be crowded, and probably wouldn't go. For some reason we talked ourselves into going. Before he arrived there was a entry box, and it said there was going
to be lots of prizes. We entered probably 30 times. Using all combinations of our first and last names, my friend's brothers names, etc. It was me, my mom, and my best friend.
We got there early, but it's hard to remember now how early. Probably 30 minutes. I remember we were talking about how it was getting close to
his listed arrival time that NO ONE WAS THERE. The time came, and here comes Karl. As I recall now there was another guy, and his son, and that was it.
(as far as people who were obviously there to see Karl). So Malone comes in, and it's just sort of strange. He ends up sitting with us. We gave him
an article with a picture for him to sign. The article was something like "LA, and NYC are too fast for me, SLC is my speed". Something like that.
He sat, and read the article. Yes, I know what you are thinking, Karl can read? He was very intent, and obviously very into what it said. Either that or it was more difficult to
read that he led on. After he was done, he signed it, and gave it back. He was very serious, but relaxed. At this point it became really strange.
There was no one there. This grand event was empty. It's Karl sitting at a table next to us, and silence. My family started asked him questions
to fill in the silence. "What's your favorite food"? "I dunno, Burgers I guess" was the one I'll never forget. This went on for a good 10 minutes before finally the manager said ok it's time
to give out the prizes. Karl will you do the drawing. Karl stands up, and is handed the first winner. It's me! We won a Tshirt, Jazz hat or something!.
Next winner, it's my friend Ty! He won some other sort of item. Then our fake names started coming up....I don't recall when or how we made our exit,
but we did at some point soon after leave. We realized we were about to have our stupid fake names called over and over. We left Karl, and the empty
Mcdonalds never knowing how it ended.

Years later you heard about Karl doing a signing at a mall and having lines wrapped around forever. This was so early on that Karl wasn't the big
star he was to be. Thank you Karl for that moment. Answering our questions, and probably calling out of fake names for the next 20
minutes after we left the store.
