If I recall, before Lawson was drafted most thought he'd be a backup, but I just have this feeling Canaan will be a stud.

We really gonna hate on Bongo when he was unjustly banned for most of the season? Then he rejoins the team when they are in tough conference play and expect him to lead them to the NCAA Tourney?

His season stats still averaged out to 14 ppg, 5 rebounds, 5 assist with high amount of trips to the FT line. He still has his TO issues and lack of shooting ability, but I think he would be a great value pick in the 2nd half of the 1st round.

Have you ever watched Canaan play? I saw him once in HS and that's it, so I can't really comment too much.

What separates guys like CP3 and Flynn (guys who both lack size and athleticism) are a.) the intangibles and b.) the skill set that translates to the NBA.

The intangibles:

-He has a top-notch BBIQ which is evidenced by his remarkable assist/TO ratio (he leads the nation, no?).

-Anyone can tell you he leads his team with incredible poise; never plays out of control, but still has that quiet intensity about him.

-I believe he has a good work ethic. Between his freshman and sophomore years he increased his 3P% from 35% to 40%; his FG% from 43% to 48% (despite taking more shots than he did as a freshman); his APG from 4.6 to 6.7 and his TO's from 2.8 to 2.0. He strikes me as a student of the game.

The NBA skill set:

-One obvious problem his physical limitations will create is in his ability to get all the way to the rim and finish over NBA defenders. The way he will have to adjust to this is with a mid range game. I.e. mid range pull-up jumpers and a reliable floater. Burke can do both. I believe he leads the nation in shooting off the dribble which makes me believe he will be fine pulling up for the mid range jumper if the paint is packed with guys like Ibaka or Jordan, and he also appears to have a silky smooth floater from what I've seen, which will also allow him to score without getting all the way to the rim.

-He's an actual PG! Burke seems to have very good court vision and passing abilities, unlike other physically limited guards that come into the NBA like Fredette, or Augustin who also seems more like a combo guard to me. There will be no question on whether or not he can run an offense. And when judging whether someone's playmaking ability will translate to the NBA we typically want the PG to have one of two things: 1.) Blow by ability. In other words, being able to penetrate past his man, thus breaking down the defense, forcing help defenders to rotate, which creates passing lanes. 2.) Perimeter shooting. In other words, by being able to spread the floor your man can't sag off you and cram the space of floor within the 3-point line, which also helps to create passing lanes. Burke can obviously shoot both spotting up and off the dribble (perimeter shooting) AND can get by his man (blow by ability). I don't know if he'll necessarily be elite at blowing by his man, but he seems to have enough ball handling (crossovers combined with change of pace etc.) and speed to do a decent job at getting by his man, especially with the help of screens. Kendall Marshall has great court vision and passing abilities, but lacks both blow by and the perimeter shooting aspect which would help open up his passing game. Kabongo has blow by ability, but not really the shooting aspect. Burke has the court vision, passing abilities, willingness to pass, and the blow by ability and shooting that will help bring out his passing game in the NBA.

So, in summary I think Burke has the BBIQ, poise, and work ethic that, along with the skill set that will allow him to score and make plays for others despite his lack of size and explosion. This doesn't mean I think he'll be a Chris Paul, but I do think he can be a starting PG in the NBA and bring a similar level of production of guys like Jeff Teague or Jameer Nelson etc; just a quality starting PG.

And when it comes down to it, Flynn may have just been a victim of circumstances. The team you go to has a huge impact on your development. Flynn got injured, had a disappointing sophomore season and then was immediately given up on and traded because the Wolves had Rubio coming in.

What if Flynn got draft by Utah during the Sloan years and had consistency?

Big Al is the reason Flynn always sucked.

Yeah, I have no idea how good Flynn would be, if he had been in another situation. But as far as Burke and the Jazz go, it could work out very well situation-wise. Deron Williams has stated how much better he was in the Jazz system and how it helped him, and you can really tell that's true by his lesser production with the Nets. The Jazz system could help Burke's game come alive. Though, sometimes I wonder what exactly our system is anymore...

Not saying he would be a great player, or even a starter, but it seems really weird that he isn't even in the league anymore at all. I just think he would still be in the league if he went to a team that actually developed him for 4 years instead of a team that was drafting Pg's and throwing them against the wall to see who stuck.
