Following potential 2013 draftees

Here's the truth. Coach K is a HELL OF A COACH.. but kids KNOW that he runs a system that brings them along more slowly than others. It is widely known.
Kids that see themselves going to college for more than one year and learning a lot from a great coach are most likely to choose Duke.. and it works for K.

Nothing Xthren said is contrary to that and it's not a negative.

However, the holier than thou 'recruit only kids that take education seriously' is a bad argument (the one I made in the first paragraph is the far better one). If you were being totally honest.. you would take into account that K went hard after John Wall, Shabazz Muhammed, Julius Randle, etc.

I'll let you guys do your own research, but I GUARANTEE you that K is recruiting and offering the top players EVERY year.. but he doesn't get them because he doesn't want them, but rather the kids want to be able to play a faster paced game and to showcase their skills better.

There is no right or wrong way to do it. I don't think Cal has the better recipe for success over K.. not at all.. but it's dumb to suggest one is great and the other sucks.

#1 player does not equal #1 draft pick. You should know that PKM. Also, just for facts sake, he was the #2 player on Scout, #3 on ESPN, and #4 on Rivals. I believe everybody had Harrison Barnes as #1. Most people thought Irving and Brandon Knight were very similar. They were wrong.

If Bledsoe can actually get a degree at Kentucky, I think that says how much of an "academic" institution they really are.

In the 2012 draft thread (started very early on) I pimped Irving as the clear cut, undisputed best player in the country.. and when comparisons were made with Knight, I scoffed.

The comment about Bledsoe is pretty disgusting, unless you don't know his circumstances and it was merely a naïve statement.

Duke doesn't play a fast paced system? They only averaged 78 ppg this year.

Duke likes to run when they can. Kids will play if and when they're ready to play. If they have a problem with that, then that's on them.

If Coach Cal's track record proves anything, it proves that his primary interest is in creating a group of well-behaved intellectual citizens interested in improving themselves, their community, the ethics of NCAA sporting, and then finally playing a little basketball.

Who said Irving was an unknown? I just said that at the beginning of the year he wasn't being thought of as the #1 pick.

And yes, being coached by K did help. Unless if you're trying to say that anybody can coach talent...and in that case, Cal doesn't get credit for Rose/Cousins/Davis and everybody else.

I don't ever say Cal is the best coach.. what I say is he allows the young guys to get more experience, faster, than anyone else. Of course they both help the players progress.. maybe I misread your post.. I thought you were like, "who is this Irving kid??"

You might have, but nobody else did, and that's what we're talking about.

Xthren said he was the projected #1, Cy and I said that was false, and we were right.

You were wrong when you said he was rated the #1 highschool player as well.

Yeah, I really thought a top 5 recruit came out of nowhere...

That is pretty much what I said. I didn't say Duke doesn't want those prospects, just that they usually don't get them. When they do though, I don't see their stock being hurt from being on Duke.

Just saying Irving wasn't this undisputed #1 pick coming into the college season. His play at Duke definitely propelled him, as well as the overall disappointment from other top ranked draft prospects.

I have no problem with that concept, in general, but Cal can outsell any other coach in America in telling them he won't hold them back.

NAOS wins post of the day.

my prediction (very early) is nerlens noel.

1) noel
2) mohammed
3) zeller (he'll slip, i believe .. But not past 5 or 6)

other's are better equipped to accuractely guess than i am .. But i'd peg 14.

these are from 10 months ago.

the first is about projected draft order, the second is what the jazz's pick would be.

this man is a god, or he has a working crystal ball.

He was.. so there.

Well, let's narrow it down and just say I don't have a crystal ball.

That was an awesome exchange guys. And mostly respectful, which is damn near impossible when discussing UK.

Kudos and thanks.
