Following potential 2013 draftees

I'll predict that the Jazz front office likes Wolters more than the average Jazzfanz poster. He might be the Gordon Hayward of point guards. At the same time, I think he's more skilled than Dragic and Vasquez. The Jazz have to know their options for PGs assuming McCollum and Schroeder are off the board at #14. If they're comfortable with Kabongo or Wolters at #21, then they can feel good about drafting another position at #14. I don't think they'll wait til the 2nd round to draft a point guard. At the same time, I'd be surprised if Shane Larkin is in play at #21.

It makes sense to cover their bases.

Any team that gave significant minutes to Earl Watson is bound to draft a point guard in the upcoming draft. It's just a question of which one.

My major concern with Wolters is his athletic abilities. Remember how he struggled against Burke in the tourney? He couldn't get anything going. The NBA is much faster/quicker than college ball.

I'd want to see if he can get close to at least Steph Curry's athleticism coming out of the Combine. He'd be worth the #21 pick if he can get somewhere within the orbit.

Wolters' athleticism and defense are the main question marks, but Wolters was actually guarded by a SG for much of the Michigan game that I saw. Michigan was pretty physical with him and kept him out of the lane by bumping him quite often. Wolters ended up 3 for 14. Bad shooting game for sure. Meanwhile Burke also had a bad game, starting out 0 for 9 and ending 2 for 12. He certainly didn't punish Wolters much.

Betcha there is a new post to announce the tryouts. I came close to making one myself.

I hope they bring in Dennis, I'd love him at 21.

I think when wolters starts hitting the weights and doing core training you'll see a big difference in his game.

I watched the sdsu vs Michigan game and Burke started off guarding wolters and couldn't do a thing against him. then the switch came.

Well he needs to get quicker. Much quicker. To play the PG in the league.

Most of the European players are not expected to be at the Combine, and I'm not sure what their availability is for workouts in the U.S. But yeah, I'd love the Jazz to get Schroeder in a workout with some other first-round prospects. I think it's no secret the Jazz are looking at him.

I'm not so sure. It makes sense to say he needs to get quicker, but if you look at how quick some other guards in the league are--like Rubio, Vasquez, George Hill, Dragic, Nash, etc.--they're not real quick, but they're quick enough to play at game speed. Wolters isn't going to be an elite defender, and he's not going to blow by anyone. His game is running pick-and-rolls, making defenses pay when they go under screens, and making plays if he can get in the lane.

I'll be the first to admit that he's not ideal for the pro game (okay, maybe not the first), but he might be able to get by. I'd definitely rather have McCollum or Schroeder. After that it gets blurry for me. Every PG has weaknesses and strengths and you take the bad along with the good.

Anyone notice how much Calderon is making?

If you can develop elite passing ability, I think that negate your athleticism to a certain extent. You just use your passes to beat the man, instead of having to go around the man yourself.

I think that's how guys like Rubio, Vasquez, Nash gets by defenders... with passes.

Yeah but how long does that take

Can't really judge a point guard's athleticism in the draft. They rely on craftiness, trickery, and smart use of pick and rolls to beat their man. Steve Nash was a fairly slow point guard in raw foot speed but constantly beat his man off the dribble just by having a devastating hesitation dribble mixed in with paralyzing head fakes.

I am still hoping for wolters in this draft but I think the jazz could buy a late first and still get him.

right now this would be my draft strategy

#14 draft bpga if Burke, McCollum, schröder and McW are still there. (been going back and forth with McW)
if they are gone then draft BPA dieng, Goodwin, karasev, olynyk, plumlee.

#21 a- if pg is drafted at 14 then BPA see above list followed by Adams, kcp, giannis, saric, withey
b- if a pg is not taken then bpga wolters, Larkin, bongo, brown

I wouldn't say Vasquez has elite passing ability. He's just a lot bigger than most PG's so he can pass over them, it helps him out quite a bit...I don't think his skills are elite though. Plus, the dude sucks at defense.

We all know Wolters can score, and is a bad defender. My question is how well can he run a team, and pass the ball?

Uhhh, how do we know he is a bad defender? We know he was a pretty good defender in his league, but his league wasn't that great. We question if he can defend NBA caliber guards, but we don't know that he can't. Every question about Wolters has to do with the level of competition he played.
