What's new

How do you get away with it?

I just stop in the middle of my lecture and post on my I phone...

All my students are already texting and jit like that anyways!!.

I think the big job coup in the 21st century is to escape being behind a computer all day and still make a decent wage. I really don't think the office life is ideal in any way, no matter where that office is or how much you are pulling in.

Yep I would tend to agree with this.

The exception would be if you really love what you're doing and/or you're making a difference in the world somehow.. that would motivate me to go back to an "office". :)

A reason other than money is what I'm saying.

Whether you post here a lot or a little..

how do you justify?

OR, better said, how do you HIDE your time?

When the boss walks by..

When the wife walks by....

For me: I don't have to worry about work, but wife.. yikes..

I have email up and a couple excel spreadsheets.. I shrink JF as she walks by .. but enough about me....... wuddya do?

Take a look at your post count. Then take a look at the counts of all of the rest of us. Then ask yourself if it's really likely we have as much of an issue with this as you do.

Y the hate...

You could learn from this dude!!

This is me. I love what I do - I would love it even if I still sat in the same office for 9 hours straight every day. But I don't. I get to be creative and, as long as my work gets done, I can pretty much come and go as I please. I'm never going to get rich doing it, but my employment happiness quotient has never been higher.

hmmm, I spend 14 hrs a day on JF with post count 8,000. Colton has over 4,000.

Then again, he's 100x smarter so probably takes like 10 seconds to post what would take me 30 minutes.

Wow that's really great bro, it really showed in the way you post too. People who post angry, are not happy with their lives IMO.

The more I think about it, I really think those people that go and teach English in foreign countries are the smart ones in our generation....because our generation is absolutely screwed. None of those English teachers are really raking it in to any degree(who is really though, when you factor in debt load?) but if somebody will take care of your housing and give you a little money to live on, and you get to live a life of discovering new places....you're like 4 steps ahead of most people on account of purely living life. Otherwise, you almost have to play the debt game here and the debt game is a total sham. Might as well live somewhere cheap and have a little fun.

Yes I do agree - to a certain extent though.

It is a fun life for a while when you're young.. recent graduate... 23 - 29 age range... Then you hit the big 30 and you start question the meaning of life in general.. What is it? Do I want a family? Should I start a family? Who do I want to be with? Do I want to stay here in this foreign land forever, or do I prefer to be closer to my father & mother (who have just retired & may need looking after in the future).

Lots of questions to ponder when you start to get old...

I think it will be a good life experience... but ultimately can you create a "nest" for yourself and your family to live in. At 1 point in your life you do have to start saving for when you're old....

We ALL need to do that. (unless you've come across inheritance or suddenly win the lotto)

No doubt. Family formation is still the way to go if possible in my view too. I'm mainly speaking of those who jump into the rat race, do everything they can and still hit a wall. It's just not worth it just to survive in that context. I'm saying if you're just surviving, make life happen in other ways. Everybody should feel alive. Unfortunately there are a lot of them these days and as you look at marriage rates and such....the family ideal is just breaking down for many reasons and not happening. A lot of that is pure economics.

Take your accounting job for example....I'm very familiar. Being at a Big 4 would have made you the envy of every person that has busted their asses(and bored themselves to death) earning an accounting degree. But you guys are the minority of the accounting lot. But for what? To work 65-70 hours a week in high season for 50 k, so that you can gain experience so you can make an extra $10,000 grand in the future at some other firm and have to bust your *** getting that CPA on top of it to even get there? When are you going to meet that special lady working that much? I guess....at work. That's professional America in a nutshell these days. You work more for less. You have to be more educated for the same jobs of yesteryear. And that's at the top. The rest of the accounting world that is not Big 4 are lucky to get a decent job. A lot just bookkeep for $12/hr. What if you're bookeeping for $12/hr and you've got $45,000 in school debt? How does starting a family sound now? A lot are unemployed or working some menial job that doesn't require a degree eventhough their GPA's ere bigger than Lebron James' scoring averages and being counted as being employed. And you can apply that to almost anything these days. It's insanity.

Well most of us don't have 30K posts. So I don't really have to get away with it. I just post in my free time. :)

Yes i agreed with 100% of what you've said there - hence the move I made to "get out of the rat race" so to speak. There are people who thrived in it though, competitive people who have families to look after, who've already made it to the Manger, ED, Partners level... I was an assistant manager and was about to be promoted manager when I quit. Seeing what those guys at the top have to do didn't really make me want to continue...

Get yourself out of an office, find something you really enjoy doing and can get paid for, save some $$$ THEN start thinking about family... I'm still working on the family part but that's another story all together.. LOL

I feel bad for you people.

1. Work from home
2. Divorced that bitch so no wife
3. Kids are grown
4. I am my own master who works in his man cave
5. Be jealous
