What's new

Bought NBA Jam for Wii. Wiish I didn't.

My PS3 has worked fine since day one. I had one broken Xbox 360 which Microsoft repaired and worked fine up until I upgraded to the new smaller and quieter model. Nintendo's idea of innovation is taping two Gamecube's together and adding some gimmicky motion controls that Microsoft and Sony have already bested with their motion controller options.

I have a Wii. I use it every I dunno... 3 months, when something decent actually comes out. Like Super Mario Galaxy 2 for instance.

Glad one of your reasons for liking the Wii is that you're illegally playing games on it. Good job. I'm not sure if you realize this, but that's not exactly a feature of the Wii console, nor is it something that can't just as easily be done on the PS3 or 360.

So enjoy the plethora of shovelware and minigame collections. I'll gladly take the quality games.

Hey, you do what you can with no money.
I like the 360 just fine, but I'm sick and tired of throwing my time at it, and then having more 3 ring crap.
If microsoft actually knew how to make hardware, maybe they wouldn't have millions of problems.
I've had a lot of fun on 2k online, but I also like 2k on the Wii.

And what to you is a quality game??

I've still never seen a better RPG in my life than Crono Trigger for SNES.

And no basketball game to this day has even touched NBA Live '99 IMO.

Do you really believe these games nowdays are really worth 60 bucks?? No matter how pretty they are.
Not to mention the 360 keeps releasing the same boring first person shooter, based on Doom 95.

Only that PS move is going to work with far more advanced games than the wii can offer. I don't see many soccer moms playing a hard core FPS.
And I don't see a hardcore FPS utilizing motion controls. At least not a credible one. As motion control tech stands now, any decent FPS will be reliant on the feedback of tactile controllers. The latency of Move, Kinect, Wii whatever, is absurd and is not designed to work in any substantive way with games that require precision or fast reflexes (i.e. FPS's).
Do they not want to use real money so you don't realize how much money you are actually blowing?
3 bucks a month in exchange for A TON of usability and features? I could give **** all about how little XBL costs me. And I pay for my **** in straight cash homie.

There are a lot of games this generation that are easily worth 60 bucks. Remember back when Chrono Trigger came out it was 70 brand new (I remember, I paid that much for it).

But back to the original question of "do you believe these games nowadays are worth 60 bucks?" Yes, here is a partial list:

Fallout 3
Borderlands
Batman Arkham Asylum
Red Dead Redemption
Rock Band 2 (granted, you need to have guitar controllers or a mic first)
Grand Theft Auto 4
Uncharted 2
Metal Gear Solid 4
Gears of War 2

I could go on a little further, but those are games that I would have felt absolutely no problem what so ever spending 60 on. In fact, a few of those I did buy on day 1 (GTA 4 and Rock Band 2) and have easily got back "game play to time to money ratio" out of them.

Sports games? outside of NBA Jam, I don't know if I would spend more than 40 on a sports title. I don't really have a lot of time to devote to gaming as it is, let alone a time based purchase.

Couldn't have possibly said it better myself. The Wii at my place gets turned on maybe once a month, for an hour or two of Super Smash Bros, usually when company is over.

There are hundreds for the 360 and PS3 that are worthy of playing. My gamefly list has been at 50 (max) ever since I signed up, and I'm still way behind. Just to name a handful of my favorites, that everyone should at least try:

Shadowrun
Mass Effect 1 and 2
Fallout 3
Half-Life 2
Dead Rising
Oblivion
Red Faction: Guerrilla (my sister and brother-in-law that never play games love Wrecking Crew in this game)
Portal
Heavy Rain
Little Big Planet
Dragon Age: Origins
ModNation Racers (Better version of MarioKart)

And no basketball game to this day has even touched NBA Live '99 IMO.

Basketball games suck now anyway. I think the most fun NBA games I've played were NBA Live 95 and 2002. Since about 2lk6 it's been the same game over and over with extremely minor "improvements". The controls are always bad, the motion is always unpredictable, the features they put in year to year are always awful (2k8's play-running system was the worst thing I've ever seen in my life), etc. A lot of people like them, but I think they're more of a novelty item than a quality game.

Do you really believe these games nowdays are really worth 60 bucks?? No matter how pretty they are.

Since when was a game about being pretty? And it also sounds like you need to get on a rental system and play games without paying full price for them.

Not to mention the 360 keeps releasing the same boring first person shooter, based on Doom 95.

This has to be a joke, right? I'll concede that Halo is pretty much the same game over and over, but you need to play a game like Shadowrun and tell me it's anything like Doom. Call of Duty has always been fun, too. Even an obscure game like ET:Quake Wars has it's problems but it's still a fun, unique game.

I think most of your complaints come from not really knowing or getting a good variety of games for the premier systems.

^ my favorite FPS is Unreal Tournament 3. It was kind of overlooked, but I think it is a great game regardless. The PS3 one has a ton of extra maps for free on it.

I also really like all the Arcade/PSN games out this generation. There are so many great games on the downloadable services for under 10 bucks.

The only games I would even have on that list is Batman: Arkham Asylum, Metal Gear, Red Dead Redeption and Rock Band 2 (because of all the expensive crap needed to play).

The Gears of War series is the same old crap, based on Doom. First person "boring" shooters, with some "WOW" different guns.

That's what the X-Box and Playstation have always been about from the start, making graphics better, making games prettier. Because that's what the hardcore gamer has become, obsessed with graphics and HD prettiness. (Which I'm no longer a hardcore gamer anyway, not enough time.)
I'll agree that I should get on a good rental system.

Halo is definitely the same game over and over. Not to mention games like Gears of War, and Call of Duty.
The supposed cool games that everybody loves are the same games that I think are lame.
Gears of War, with it's same old crap over and over again........... and of course Call of Duty (especially Modern Warfare), with it's government propaganda and admitted "staging of terror attacks".

I've never played Shadowrun, but from what I read it sounds pretty cool.
And I've never played Quake for the 360, but I sure used to have fun playing the old Quake in computer class with all the geeks back in the day lol.

Can I just say this it is a lot easier to get my wife to play Super Mario Galaxy and Mario Party than it is to get her to play Call of Duty and Gears of War. I am not saying one system is better than the other or anything I play plenty of games on my PS3 that don't exist on my Wii, but it sure makes getting your wife/girl friend into gaming easy.

I've also gone through two PS3s due to one always wigging out. And by the way, I don't tie my manhood to what video game console I enjoy playing. First person shooters just aren't my thing. Simple games that are fun and easy that anyone can play? Bring on the wii. All day.

Gears of War is actually a "3rd person" shooter, it isn't based in "tunnels" and focuses more on beating back enemies opposed to just running through caverns killing things. I can see how on the outside it looks "like every other FPS", but it actually has more innovation than most games this generation. You can say Halo is like Doom, but than again you can't because Doom really doesn't have any story aspects to it which makes these games so enthralling. Uncharted 2 by your definition would be a "same old boring shooter" and that is one of the most cleverly written and beautifully executed games this generation. And it has the same control scheme as Gears of War.

Rock Band 2 does require some "expensive crap" but they are really not that expensive. I know right now at wal mart you can pick up Guitar Hero 5 with controller for 50 bucks, and you can get Rock band games for under 30.. but that is besides the point. I was talking about games I would straight up buy brand new day one that would be worth the 60 dollars.

if you can get more than 12 hours out of any game it is cheaper than seeing a movie and that is what I base my opinions on.

Actually the whole thing made me decide to plop my PS1 version of NBA Jam into the PS3...and wow. Video games have come a long way. Doooooesn't look to sharp on the HDTV.

Hey, you do what you can with no money.

Like pirate games, apparently.

I'm not going to defend their ability to create hardware, although last generation, it was the PS2 that broke all the time and the original Xbox was rock solid and reliable. Bad things tend to happen when you rush hardware to the market. I would be REALLY surprised if any of the major console makers put out a console with the problems that the launch models of Xbox 360 had. And by the way, they've fixed these issue since, and were remarkably responsive to the defect issues. extending warranties for up to 3 years from purchase.

That said, broken consoles have nothing to do with games, so moving on...

And what to you is a quality game??

A lot of games have been thrown around already, but I'll specifically point to Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 2, BioShock, Heavy Rain and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Those titles are prime examples of what a video game can achieve. They put most Hollywood films to shame, both in terms of scale and story.

I've still never seen a better RPG in my life than Crono Trigger for SNES.

So you haven't played an RPG since 1995? Mass Effect 1 & 2, Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls IV, Fable II, Dragon Age Origins, Borderlands... and those are just the Western RPGs. I'm not one for modern Japanese RPGs but there are plenty quality ones available, especially on the PS3.

And no basketball game to this day has even touched NBA Live '99 IMO.

NBA Live has been a joke since 2K made it's debut on the Dreamcast. Hell, Kobe Bryant's NBA Courtside was better than NBA Live '99.

Do you really believe these games nowdays are really worth 60 bucks?? No matter how pretty they are.

Well I buy plenty of them, so obviously I think they're worth it. But I don't base my purchases based on graphics. You seem to think that my opinions are all based on graphics, and that's simply not the case. If I were to create a top ten list of my favorite games of all time, there probably wouldn't be more than 1 or 2 of them that have come out in the past 5 years.

Not to mention the 360 keeps releasing the same boring first person shooter, based on Doom 95.

Doom 95? Seriously? You think Halo (or any modern first-person shooter these days) is just a rehash of Doom? Have you even played a video games since 1999 or are you just talking out of your ***? Saying **** like that makes you look incredibly out of touch with the modern games industry.

I get that you prefer the Wii, whatever, that's your preference. More power to you. But you might want to hold off on the anti-Sony and anti-Microsoft nonsense, since it's clear you haven't got a clue what you're talking about.

I've also gone through two PS3s due to one always wigging out. And by the way, I don't tie my manhood to what video game console I enjoy playing. First person shooters just aren't my thing. Simple games that are fun and easy that anyone can play? Bring on the wii. All day.

I own all 3 of the major consoles and I certainly don't hate the Wii by any stretch. It just doesn't get used very often

You should really give NBA 2K11 a shot. They spent the majority of their time working on running plays and changing the way player spacing works. The play running system slows the game down and really makes it feel more like real basketball than any other game I've played. It also limits the ways the superstars like Kobe and Lebron can dominate, because they still need open looks to hit shots consistently.

Because that's what the hardcore gamer has become, obsessed with graphics and HD prettiness. (Which I'm no longer a hardcore gamer anyway, not enough time.)

I don't know that I'd label them hardcore gamers. Typically casual ones are the ones that notice graphics before anything else.

and of course Call of Duty (especially Modern Warfare), with it's government propaganda and admitted "staging of terror attacks".

It's just a game.. what does it matter what kind of government propaganda they are trying to simulate? Isn't that the backdrop to every single war? Modern Warfare 2 is one of the best campaign games I've ever played. Multiplayer is decent, too. You should really give it a shot at least for the campaign.

I've never played Shadowrun, but from what I read it sounds pretty cool.
And I've never played Quake for the 360, but I sure used to have fun playing the old Quake in computer class with all the geeks back in the day lol.

Shadowrun is my favorite FPS of all-time, and FPS is my genre of choice. It's the only game I'd say is worthy of playing competitively.

The game I'm talking about is called Quake Wars. They basically took the characters and theme of quake but made it into this sort of odd RTS + FPS hybrid. The best thing about it is you can play against a full team of bots and they play very much like humans. The 360 has an outstanding demo for it. I must have played it 30 times before I finally bought the game.

I played 2K11's demo several times, giving it what I'd call a fair chance. It still feels clumsy, slow, and out of control to me.

I'll also say that it's been a lot better than the last few years of 2k, but the last 2k game I bought was 2k8 and it was awful. I've always played demos because I have a soft spot for basketball, but I respect myself enough to not spend money on the games that I know I'll wind up hating.

I'm sure a lot of it is still a matter of preference, anyway.

More NBA Jam:

John Stockton got absolutely screwed with a 3Point shot rating of 4. Completely ridiculous.

Unlockable teams include the Republicans and the Democrats. All the Republicans have a steal rating of eight, which I'm pretty sure is a political statement of some kind.

Dick Cheney has a pretty high shooting accuracy, which I don't think is supported historically.

George Bush's clutch rating is a "3."

Hillary Clinton is a playable character so if you ever wanted to push her over now is your chance.

Fox News actually did a story about this, and claimed the game itself was partisan because Obama had "powers" that other characters didn't have.
