Defensive ratings when Al Jefferson is off the court is inherently inaccurate. We had one of the best benches in the league last season-- also, Al Jefferson rarely played with the bench. So, while Al Jefferson is pretty much facing the opposing team's best players ~99% of the time, our good bench is matching up against squads which, more often than not, paled in comparison.

So yes, our bench was good defensively in comparison to those of other teams-- however, we shouldn't assume that our bench would maintain the same 'defensive rating' while playing against an opposing team's best players.

Losing Jefferson will obviously help our defense-- but we are all delusional if we think that subtracting Jefferson from the equation will make us the 3rd best defense in the league.

The only way we will ever become a top 10 defensive team (with our young core it is definitely possible) is through proper coaching, and implementing a good defensive system that suits the strengths of our players. Otherwise, we have no chance

/rant.

Last years bench may not have the same defensive rating against starters as they did against rival benches but they will have a better defensive rating than Big Al and crew. Simply because they play better D.

I strongly agree with the coaching part of it. But having players that have the ability and inclination to play D certainly helps.

Yup, I mentioned that in our post. Obviously losing Al is gonna change things a lot (for the better)-- I just have a problem with people using "Defensive Rating" as justification, because I personally find it inaccurate. But any who.

Sloan might perfer a assistant postion at this point in his life. He could be Ty's Phil Johnson.

Sloan probably wouldn't "perfer" that.

You honestly think Sloan could be somebody's assistant? I mean...do you remember Jerry Sloan? He ain't no assistant.

I think it will improve just from the players but I agree that it will never be elite D without proper coaching.

I agree. Sloan is an alpha male.

Sloan went from a head coach in Chicago to an assistant in Utah, when he was much younger. As alpha males age, they don't feel the need to bring out the alpha all the time anymore.

I can appreciate and respect the whole "forward, not back" attitude while disagreeing with it. I can't see that Sloan would be unable to be an assistant because of his personality.

Good post. I have no doubt that overall, our defensive effort will be better than it was last year. However, as you noted, our "bench" is now stepping up to compete against starters. Utah will be very good at times, and struggle at times. But that's the case with young players; performance is uneven, but hopefully improves as they get solid playing time. Obviously we still have no idea who the Jazz will draft and what FA's will be brought back or pursued. In any case, I look for the Jazz to struggle early, then play .500 ball - or close to it - over the last month or two of the season.

As for the Sloan question, I think having him as an assistant would be detrimental. I could see him in a FO role or as a consultant, ready to step in if/when Ty crumbles. In fact, wasn't Popovich in the front office and then stepped in to assume coaching duties?

Bad idea anyway you look at it.

Jazz wouldn't insult him with an assistant coach offer. The guy is a HOFer.
Jazz know he wouldn't accept that position. Why would he?
Jazz know it would screw with Corbin. Does he have to get approval from Jerry on everything? Is Jerry going to take his job?

They either can Corbin and put him back as head coach OR hire him to be a some sort of consulting/front office job (much better/likely scenario).
