100% agreed and I mentioned this to my brother during the draft. It's stupid for the players and also for the fans. They should be able to announce it when the pick is made as long as it doesn't involve any existing players (then I understand the deal might take longer to review/approve). I'd like to see the NBA move to a computerized draft board so they can change team names as soon as trades are made. It's ridiculous that they are still sliding cards into a board for team and player names.
Another benefit of a procedural change is for recording draft history. You know how this year will be remembered historically? As the year the Jazz drafted Shabazz Muhammed, Gorgui Dieng and Erick Green. Just like they drafted Ryan Humphries and Nazr Mohammed in prior years. Just like Seattle drafted Scottie Pippen. Allow trades to be revealed live and you can fix these blips in draft history. Make it happen new commish!

i am in no way an expert on any of this. but might it be that, trades like this are not definite right away. for example, if bazz got taken before the jazz drafted, maybe the wimberwolves would've said, no, you keep the pick and maybe we'll sort something else out etc.

I agree it's a stupid policy. One of the great things about the NFL draft is when the team that's "on the clock" suddenly changes, especially if it is your team that moves up. What the league really needs to do is move the draft to the end of July or even to August, after the salary cap is settled and free agency plays out. That way there is no waiting until July to trade Pervis Noel to Philly for Jrue Holiday because teams need to have cap space cleared.

Reminds me of drafting DWill. They traded up and that worked out OK.
I'm still in shock.
Did the Jazz really pick three players, but none of them with the picks they had yesterday morning? Yes, that really happened.
Did the Jazz really get the top point guard, and a big whom one professional writer's mock draft had going as high as #7?? Yes, that really happened.

Wow, just wow. Historic.
However these picks turn out (All-Stars, starters, role players, or busts), the Jazz FO was aggressive and proactive. Not reactive. They went out and got who they wanted. The didn't wait around and take BPA like they have so many other years. Freaking awesome.
I was sitting around last night watching ESPN post-draft coverage and my wife asked who the Jazz drafted. I took the ten minutes necessary to explain how the trades work on draft day and explained how the drafted Mohammad and the other dude, but had already traded them for Burke. You're right, camel. If the deal isn't final then it can't be announced. If Minnesota and Utah agreed on the deal only contingent on someone being there at #14 and #21 then it shouldn't be announced. But I don't think that was the case this time. From the reports out of the war rooms, I think the agreement was made before the Wolves picked Burke. At that point in time Minnesota and Utah both considered the deal final. Now perhaps the league hadn't approved yet but in a deal involving only current year draft picks the league should be able to rubber stamp in no time.
If my info is correct, the deal was final the pick prior to Burke being selected.. it was contingent on Burke or McCollum being selected. I got a text seconds after Burke was selected and well before it was officially announced.
Trades don't work that way. If Twolves backed out because their guy got picked before 21 it would be an extreme dick move and teams wouldn't trust them anymore.

Some thoughts from last night...
First just want o say... That was one wacky draft last night
Ok a few things.
1. I had Burke as a middle of the draft prospect. When Detroit didn't pick Burke, I thought ohhhh ****. Burke and or CJ is in play at 14,
2. the next pick is taken by Min. And of course it's Burke, and I'm thinking what are they doing. All of a sudden I here this is a trade to Utah..... I begin to tantrum, yelling "no no no no!! Too early". Then Bazz goes at 14, and at this point I've completely lost the will to live thinking we could've gotten Bazz, and still used the 21 pick on Gobert or Goodwin
3. Completely down on life, and watching the draft, I see on jazzfanz that the jazz have traded for Gobert, he being one of my favorit players for us to get... I start to think that holy hell it doesn't feel like we drafted Burke too high. It's almost like we drafted Burke with 14 and Gobert at 21, and all we had to do was trade a second round pick. I thought to myself "ok I can get down with this". And looking back on it now all we gave up was a future second and cash! Wow!
Did anyone catch Simmons reaction at the end of the draft when they announced the jazz trade for Gobert? Out of nowhere you here a "WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!" classic, oh and what's the deal with Stern playing to the crowd, for a minute thought he had gone on a drinking binge or something. I found it annoying and weird.
Just as I was pissed at the Hayward pick the next morning I had convinced myself Hayward was the right pich for that team at that time. I now feel the same about Burke. He's the leader we need, can be a coach on the court, and clutch as hell. Also recall Deron not being high up on draft boards before his Tournament run. Soooo maybe Burke can have a similar nba career to Deron minus the midseason blowup and trade.
Last but not least. I think this draft signifies a new jazz attitude and phylosefy in how they do things. Now let's just win baby!!!
