Free Agent Point Guards

Could take a chance on D.J. Augustin. I remember reading his stats sometime last season, whenever he got good minutes, it was like something was turned on and all the sudden he played like the PG he was in Charlotte. But when he got fewer than 15 minutes I think, his production really dropped off. It was pretty interesting to read those stats.

So maybe if he came here he'd be that player he was in Charlotte while he's a starter, and then maybe he'd be able to keep that up once Burke started getting those minutes. I mean honestly, I really don't see him being able to get starting minutes anywhere else in the league right now besides here, right now. We could maybe sign him to a year deal and give him that chance to show other teams that he's still capable of being a starter in this league. That would really motivate a guy to play well.

I really liked him coming out of college. Not sure what happened to him. He is very small though. I think he has a decent shot and is a decent floor general. But he is very inconsistent. Doesn't seem to have the mental focus.

But I wouldn't hate this move at all. I personally would take D.J. over Maynor but it is a tough call. I still like Watson over all of them because he is a good defender and has good size and is patient with the ball and is also a consistent outside shooter.

Pssst. I'll tell you what's happening. Put your tinfoil hat on kay? So he doesn't hear us. It's Michael. Michael Jordan is stealing all the Charlotte draftees talents. He's trying to make a comeback and take over the world with all the talent he's stolen. He's evil... PURE EVIL!

I was gonna go with Will Bynum but I guess he's been struggling with a lot of pain in his hand near the season and he also is likely to re-sign with the Pistons.

So now I'm gonna have to go with Augustin. I really think if the Jazz gave him a one year deal and he has the opportunity to start and try to show other teams that he can be a key asset, that that will motivate him to work extra hard and he might look at this as a chance to rejuvenate his career rather than be relegated to being a backup point guard. Plus it's only one season and between the start of it and the end, Trey should already be starting and the next off-season the FO will be able to find a more permanent solution to a backup PG.

Augstin, Burke, Tinsley

Why isn't anyone mentioning Burks in the backup point discussions? He did a reasonable job last year. Not great, but not terrible either. I'm guessing the Jazz will go with Tinsley, Burks, and Burke.

To be honest, I'd hate to see a guy that works as hard as he does day in and day out, trying to at least get some minutes be placed behind a rookie. That's really not cool. He deserved minutes and he deserves them as a starter, imo.

Tinsley, Mayor, Augustine in that order would be my pick.

Tinsley - has experience, knows the system, can mentor Burke

Maynor - team first guy, great character, only issue is he can't shoot

Augustine - can shoot it from 3's. Will fit in will with Burks. Let Burks handle the ball most of the time, Burks drive & dish, Augustine spotting up.

I think Burks is more suited as the 6th guy, off the bench ala Hayward last season.

Because Corbin is the coach. Burks did a pretty good job as a backup PG last season and then Corbin never tried it again.

Because Burks isn't a pg!

Screw this idea. Dont bring in anybody. Play Burke and Burks at the point, all year long

That would just be too confusing.

I can't believe nobody has advocated Chauncey Billups. I mean, yes, he deserves a technical every time he steps on the floor just for being so ugly, but he's aging, would probably love the chance to teach (and would be a damn good teacher) and would only cost us a couple million.

My favorites are John Lucas III and if New Orleans Brian Roberts is released I'd be fine with him too. Both are hard worker. Really hard worker with limited talent who will set the ground for Burke work ethic wise.

He's been mentioned. We already have a perfect teacher in Tinsley (he'll come back, I guarantee it!). I'd rather have a younger guy who can be an effective backup PG for the next several seasons. Even when Neto comes over in 1-2 years, he'll still be raw. He'll be the 3rd PG and play in specific situations. I see Neto taking Tinsley's roster spot, with Jamaal being offered a job in the organization to work with the PG's. Used to think that would be Watson's career path, but he developed a nasty, selfish attitude instead of aging gracefully.

I think Tinsley comes back as the 3rd PG and mentor to Burke. Since Trey is going to be the eventual starter - if not from Day 1 - I wouldn't mind the Jazz signing Calderon or Maynor. Huge difference between the two, I know. But Maynor knows the system. He'd have no problem starting for the first month or two, then sliding to backup. Or just coming in as the backup. My fear with Calderon is that he'll want too many minutes. He was averaging 30/per last year. What happens when Burke is playing 30+ and there's only 15-18 available every night?

Also Maynor is going to cost you a fraction of what Calderón will cost you.

The Jazz want a boat load of cap space for when teams are desperate to unload contracts.

If we can sign Billups for cheap, he would be a good veteran mentor PG. Led the Pistons to 8 straight eastern conference finals and he can play the 2 guard if we want to go small. CP3 and Billups were good together

I'd like to bring in billups... Hopefully he would be a great mentor to burke and has championship experience and i remember hearing that billups is friends with alec burks as well.
