2014 Small Forwards in the Lottery and Free Agents

Of course we won’t know how the youngsters will do this coming season, but I think we mostly agree that Hayward is best as a shooting guard. With Burks being our sixth man probably, we still need that go to scorer at small forward going forward. Being curious I went to hoopsworld to see who the supposed lottery picks at small forward are in 2014. I was happy to find that 7 out of the 14 lottery picks were small forwards or combo small forwards/power forwards. I think with our 2 first round picks next year we should be able to fill that final slot in our starting 5, or find a free agent small forward with our cap space.

First going the draft lottery route:

Andrew Wiggins – 6ft.8in. – 200 lbs. – Kansas
Jabari Parker – 6ft. 8in. – 240 lbs. – Duke
Julius Randle – 6ft. 9in. – 248 lbs. – Kentucky
Glen Robinson III – 6ft. 6in. – 211 lbs. – Michigan
Wayne Seldon – 6ft. 5in. – (SG/SF) 225 lbs. – Kansas
James McAdoo – 6ft. 9in. – (SF/PF) – 230 lbs. – N.Carolina
Jerami Grant – 6ft. 8 in. – 205 lbs. – Syracuse

PKM can give us his thoughts on these players and how they are doing through-out the year.

Next are the free agents small forwards:

The following lists the 2014 free-agent class by position, followed by their 2013-14 salary. A free agent becomes be restricted when their team issues a Qualifying Offer. Only players coming off a first-round rookie scale contract or with three or fewer years in the league(whose rookie scale options were not declined) are eligible. Teams need to officially issue that Offer by June 30, 2014, to make a player restricted.

I have never had a thread stickled before, but it might be interesting to keep tabs on these players as we look forward to the 2014 lottery and free agent class.
OK jazzfanz who should we be targeting and why?

Carmelo is my favourite player of All-Time but he doesn't fit, draft Carmelo 2.0 aka Jabari Parker or sign Leflop James

The only issue I have with Jabari is his athleticism... just not really sure if he can be elite if he doesn't have it...

Jabari is healthy Grant Hill version 2.0. Not sure how old you are or how good your memory is, but Hill was an absolute beast pre-injury. 25/6.5/5 in his 4-5th year I think, and low 20's many other years but still ave 8 boards and 5-6 ast.

IMO, they have very similar skill sets, builds and demeanors.

I can see some of the comparison. Grant Hill was much more athletic and not as good of a shooter, Hill was also a little smaller if my memory is right (certainly smaller in bulk, maybe not in height).

Hill was amazing though, one of my favorite players ever (obviously). Too bad injuries robbed him. His 2nd and 3rd seasons are still just unreal in my mind. Basically averaged 20/9/7. He was mini-LeBron.

The only point I'd argue is the "much" more athletic.

Hill was very smooth/fluid but he wasn't off the charts athletically, at least as far as memory serves. Jabari is also very smooth for his size.

You're right though, Jabari is bigger from a weight standpoint I believe.

I agree with all that. Also, Jabari will score a lot in the paint/post. Hes big enough and has enough skill to become a truly inside/out dominant player.

Jazzrule... yes. I will certainly be sharing my thoughts on all these players as the college season moves forward .. I won't miss but a couple of their games and I have also rekindled some valuable information sources (scouts) this summer.

I want us to retain Brandon Rush.

This is my contribution for the time being

Very Insightful Post And Exciting To Think About. I Don't Know The College Guys Too Well But I Think Hayward Is Best Suited As A Shooting Guard And Burks A Sixth Man So A Small Forward Who Can Defend And Shows Some Offensive Versatility Would Be Very Good For The Jazz.

Didn't he play for UK? He murked the ****tier UK back when he donned the Jayhawk

He was one guy I really wanted at UK.. was sad when he chose KU... dude has much game. Haven't followed him enough to have an opinion why he hasn't ever done much.

Played on Indiana behind Granger (back when Indy sucked), and then had a solid season coming off the bench for GS before rupturing his ACL.

I don't think hell ever be a good starter in this league, but he's definitely got great backup-wing potential. Who knows if he could have a Trevor Ariza-like explosion late in his career.

I definitely think he can unless the injury permanently set him back.
I saw everything require to be a good starter.. but, again, haven't watched since.

You're opinion is obviously as good as mine. I only watched him in his late Indiana years, when we wanted to trade Millsap for him.

Hopefully his aggression hasn't taken a hit.

Great PKM...................I look forward to you and your scout sources keeping us informed. Of the free agents listed can you narrow it down to who we might go after and the chances of our getting them with our to be free agent money?

That's not my thing.. my contacts are much more reliable at the college level. I do get some info from time to time on Jazz stuff, but its pretty rare. (I did know about the Burke trade before it was announced, though.. which was fun as ****.)

Will let ya know as/if I hear stuff.

I seem to remember you coming into the draft thread and acting really surprised and acting like you had no idea what had just happened....intradasting.

No. Not surprised. Just excited. I texted UGLI right when I got the news.. which was at the exact moment Minnie was making the pick. But whatever..
