Burglar Shot Dead

This is probably the dumbest, most idiotic thing anyone has ever posted in the history of the world.

Arch, what're you talking about? Shooting first is, personally, not a viable option. And if it is for you, how do you reconcile that with your religion?

If someone breaks into my house, why would I ask what their intention is? I'm not saying kill the guy right on the spot, but at the same time I understand if the guy gets killed on the spot. Don't break into peoples houses and there is not a problem. I read about burglars killing people in their homes every week. Every week! Why would I not assume the worst? With all this being said, I don't know exactly what I would do if I were put in a situation like this. Like you said Vinylone, I hope this never happens to me or anyone else.

My religion has nothing to do with my point of view. Protecting yourself, family from danger or harm is not a sin.

Certainly I don't think committing a common burglary would warrant a penalty of death.

It doesn't, however, when you are breaking into somebody's house at 2am and they have no idea what your intentions are you run the risk of getting shot.

I love how the onus of doing the right thing in this situation is falling back on the victim.

The victim was not warned though. The right thing to do is to warn the victim. The wrong thing to do, perhaps more wrong than what the burglar did, is to kill another person.

If you don't want to get shot, don't break into someone's home.

That's a given.

What happens if you warn the intruder of your presences and he shoots you?

This isn't the wild wild west full of quick-draw wizards and shootists. If you have your pistol leveled at a fellow's chest, and he has no weapon already in his hands, you have the advantage. At that point, if he does anything you don't like, all you have to do is squeeze the trigger.

If I was checking out noises in my house at night and saw someone breaking into my house, I don't think I would put my gun down and turn around and call the police.

Why would you have to put the gun down? Why would you have to turn around? Obviously you would tend to your own safety first -- but it doesn't seem reasonable to me that you couldn't dial 911 with one hand. There are stories of dogs and babies dialing 911.

What if the dude has a gun that's breaking in?

Shoot him dead.

What if he shoots you or a member of your family because you waited for the cops?

I didn't suggest waiting for the cops. What I'm suggesting is that you do, within your best judgment, what you can to avoid killing somebody. Otherwise, do what you have to do.

We don't know the full story here. It sounds like the homeowner make have simply flat out shot the burglar through the glass, in the dark, when the burglar didn't even know he was there.

Stay the beep out of other peoples houses, burglars.

Of course.

Ever read exodus 20?

I know, I know, the bible says a lot of stupid things-- but I'll stick with my guns on the whole murder thing.

Im not saying that you need to ask their intention. Definitely not. But a simple warning can do wonders. I mean, hopefully the situation is that you caught them as they were trying to enter and not already standing in your living room...because that's a whole different ball game.

You definitely assume the worst. Always. Hence being armed as you approach the perp.

Did the "victim" warn the home owners he was going to break in and rob them?

I agree, the victim was not warned that someone was breaking into his his house. How bout some damn courtesy?

Viny, sorry I thought I had edited my first post to include the link but I guess it didn't work for some reason.

For those saying the crime doesn't fit the punishment it boils down to this: STAY OUT OF OTHER PEOPLE'S HOMES AND YOU WON'T GET SHOT!!! I have no idea why that is so hard for people to understand!? What right does the intruder have to be in someone else's home? What right do they have to their property? Maybe the homeowner should have asked him in for tea to see if he was high or drunk and to find out what his intentions were and then gone from there. If someone is breaking into my house while my 4 kids are in there they had better prepare to meet their maker. No way I let them get the upper hand in the situation.

Here is an e-mail I got last week that rings so true it is almost scary:

*Are you a Democrat, a Republican, or a Southerner?**

*Here is a little test that will help you decide.*

The answer can be found by posing the following question: *

*You're walking down a
deserted street with your wife
and two small children.

Suddenly, a bad guy with a huge knife
comes around the corner,
locks eyes with you,
screams obscenities,
raises the knife, and charges at you...

You are carrying a
Kimber 1911 cal. 45 ACP, and you are an expert shot.
You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family.
What do you do? *

*THINK CAREFULLY AND
THEN SCROLL DOWN: *
*

Democrat's Answer:*

- *Well, that's not enough information to answer the question! *
- *What is a Kimber 1911 cal. 45 ACP? *
- *Does the man look poor or oppressed? *
- *Is he really a terrorist? Am I guilty of profiling? *
- *Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack? *
- *Could we run away? *
- *What does my wife think? *
- *What about the kids? *
- *Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of
his hand? *
- *What does the law say about this situation? *
- *Does the pistol have appropriate safety built into it? *
- *Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does
this send to society and to my children? *
- *Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me? *
- *Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to
wound me? *
- *If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away
while he was stabbing me? *
- *Should I call 9-1-1? *
- *Why is this street so deserted? *
- *We need to raise taxes, have paint & weed day. *
- *Can we make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage
such behavior. *
- *I need to debate this with some friends for a few days and try to come
to a consensus. *
- *This is all so confusing! *

Did you really just call the intruder the victim?!?

The criminal was already going to jail if he was uphended. Your post has nothing to do with anything.

A simple, turning on the porch life and flashing your gloc probably could have prevented a death. That's all I'm saying.

any dumbass who's first instinct is shoot first belongs in prison. Those are the people who are a threat to society, not home burglars.

No, you're saying that the homeowner is the more deranged person because he shot first and should be the one locked up.
