TCU at Utah

I'm still in shock. Still don't know what just hit me or my beloved Utes. While TCU is certainly the better team, it's also obvious that for the first time in his tenure, Whitt didn't have his team ready to play a huge game. Considering his success with this in the past, I'm willing to give him a pass but it certainly starts to make you wonder. I'm starting to get a really bad feeling that Jordan Wynn is a longterm liability.

Now that reality has set in and I accept that Utah is just an average team, I turn my thoughts to the bright side: There's a still a good chance to finish 11-1 which would mean wins @ Notre Dame and beating BYU in the last ever MWC match-up between the two. Then, it's off to the Vegas Bowl to whallup the 5th place PAC team which would run the bowl winning streak to 10 straight.

However, with as bad as Utah looked this week, "best case scenario" is looking pretty shaky at this point.

I'm still pretty confident that we'll go 11-1 and destroy our future Pac-12 buddy in the Vegas Bowl. I'm already looking into hotel prices for Dec 21st and 22nd.

I really think that in order for Utah to move forward they need to recruit a QB. Wynn is a turnover machine who still can't make those 5 yard touch passes. He's got good talent. But he just doesn't seem to have any leadership or control over the offense. Some guys have it while others don't. Brian Johnson didn't have the strongest arm but had it.

I also think that Utah needs to put in more quick stuff into their passing game. More screens (especially to the WRs). Get the ball quickly out to those athletic WRs in space and let them make a play.

Roll Wynn out of the pocket, especially when he's obviously struggling inside the pocket. From what I saw yesterday, Utah focused a lot on slants and deep routes. They kept Wynn in the pocket which allowed TCU to just t-off and run at him.

The run game is way too basic too. Put in some more draws, traps, and sweeps. All I'm seeing are two run plays, Asiata up the middle and Wide outside over the tackle. Way too basic.

I'm with you up until destroying the Pac-10 buddy. If things stay basically the same in the Pac-10, won't Utah end up playing either Oregon St or USC? But wait, USC can't g2 bowl games... So maybe they'll end up playing Cal? Maybe they'll be able to beat down Cal again (although I'm just not sold on this Utah team). I highly doubt they'll destroy Oregon St.

I'm also not as confident that Utah is going to beat BYU at the end of the season. Rivalry games are always like this. But after watching the results from AF and TCU, I'm not as convinced that Utah is going to just destroy BYU. BYU would like nothing more than to end Utah's season with a huge dump on the field at RE stadium. All it takes is a few give-aways courtesy of Wynn to give BYU some momentum.

The 5th place Pac-10 team won't be any better than Iowa State is and look what we did to them. Yesterday put a bad taste in my mouth, but it definitely doesn't tell me that this Utes team is garbage, and that the first 8 games of the season meant nothing. We will play either Oregon State or Cal. If it's Cal again, we're better than last years team that destroyed Cal and Cal isn't any better this year. We saw just how motivated a 5th place Oregon State team was last year, and after they get blown out at home by Oregon, what makes you think they'll be motivated to play in the bowl game? Utah will beat either team by 17+ points.

Thriller, to address two of your points:

-You are correct that Utah shouldn't get too comfy with Wynn. Wynn's habit of giving the ball away (amongst other things) should make Utah feel like they really need to hit the QB area hard during recruiting. With that being said, I think an upgrade at QB may already be on the roster. Griff Robles is a redshirt freshman, 6'4", 230lbs and crazy mobile for his size. He's got an NFL-sized frame and from what I've heard he's got an NFL-sized arm as well. Now, before I close the door on Wynn, I will say that all of his problems seem to be fixable and he still does possess a ton of talents that you'd like to see in your starting QB. However, he needs to continue to progress or Robles should get a long look in the spring and fall.

-On your thoughts of Utah quite possibly losing to BYU this year: I'm sure BYU will be motivated for the game, just as Utah will be. While I will be the first to admit that BYU is playing much better than they were earlier in the season, I still think it's more than fair to say Utah is a better football team. BYU can watch that TCU film all they want, they simply won't be able to replicate any of the speed and athletisism that gave Utah fits.

Right now, I still think Utah is good enough that they can beat any team that can't compete with them on a speed/athletic front, and for all the faults Wynn has shown the last few weeks, facing BYU's D isn't even in the same realm as facing that TCU D.

I'm not ready to give up on Wynn since he is just a sophomore. It's not Wynn's fault for the defense giving up a TD on the frogs opening drive than giving up a 93 yard pass, trying to arm tackle the guy on the way. Giving up those early scored really hurt.

I was at the Pitt game earlier this year, and I was completely unimpressed with Utah that game. Since then, they played nothing but crappy teams, until they played Air Force, who is marginally good, Utah barely escaped that one.
So I am not surprised that TCU took Utah down, even that bad. I think Utah got fat off of playing very lousy teams.

Funny to see Utah fans still flapping their gums about BYU.
Sure, it's easy to bag on BYU this year. They've had a tough year. But now, they are playing some of those lousy teams that Utah beat earlier in the year.

Last year, Utah had a similar situation to BYU this year. Lost a lot of great players from the year before, a freshman QB.
Thing is, this year, BYU was playing at Florida State. Utah last year was playing at San Jose State, and BARELY winning.

But now that BYU gets to play some lousy teams, they are racking up some wins.
Last year, Utah got better as the season went on.
BYU is doing the same this year.

Bingo! Utah should be scared of BYU... but alas, they're too blinded by their success as a paper tiger.

Sent from the emperor's tailors using their fall collection.

Convenient to leave out that Utah beat Utah State by 18 and only lost by 7 on the road to LaMichael James and Oregon. Yeah I guess they are similar.....not

Some of these last few posts quickly reminded me why it is so easy to loathe BYU fans. If BYU fan thinks Utah fan is arrogant because we still feel Utah can beat BYU, get over it. Sorry we're not jumping ship after getting worked by TCU. The Horned Frogs may very well turn out to be in the NC game. They're better than Utah. Period. However, at the end of this year, they may prove to be better than anyone.

So Utah and their fans are supposed to lose their heads after 1 loss and start worrying that they can't beat BYU? And we're "blinded" if we think that? Those of you who are posting stuff like that are idiots.

I still think Utah is better than BYU. Why? Because Utah State told me so.

Please. Marcus isn't a BYU fan.

Duck, Conan, and I are pretty much the only real fans here. Everyone else is the Salty/JazzJeter of the Coug Nation. We don't claim them.

That being said, HAHAHAHAHA, nice game Utes. Nothing feels finer than watching the hopes and dreams of an entire team/state go right down the crapper.
