Was Deron Williams just a system guy?

Is D-Will's lack of success with Nets?

Mike Mazzeo: Deron Williams' turnover ratio is a career-high 14.5. Looks healthier, but still doesn't look comfortable #Nets Twitter @MazzESPN - See more at: https://hoopshype.com/rumors.htm#sthash.F3v4cRkV.dpuf

Since leaving the Jazz, he has struggled. A lot is due to injury, but like Ronnie Brewer, Shandon Anderson, Howard Eisley, etc. who all struggled severely upon leaving the Jazz, was D-Will All Star success at least partially a product of the Jazz system and culture? Or are players that leave the Jazz often cursed (e.g., Karl Malone when he went to the Lakers)?

He was not a system guy for the Jazz. He was just really good. I think he has slowed down a lot and lacks explosiveness he used to have. Couple that with the fact that his shooting, while decent, has never improved to an elite level.

The two injuries he suffered with us.

His sprained ankle in the preseason killed his explosiveness, and then the wrist injury screwed his shooting. We pawned him off at the perfect time.

It's a mix between the system we run and his injuries. Deron seems to always be nursing some kind of injury. His numbers make the Jazz front office look extremely savvy.

The Jazz used him a lot better than the Nets have. Deron has even said he likes the flex offense that Utah used. However, he has been hurt and he has gotten pretty fat. Glad to see our front office made such a smart deal in trading him. Gives me faith that they know what they are doing know, especially with david lindsey at the helm

Role players benefit from a combination of stars running a good system. The stars don't get anywhere near as much of a benefit, as the system would not work without them in the first place. They'll pick up a few more assists and score easier, but the difference isn't close to what Sloan or Poppovich or Jackson could do with role players.

Besides, in his worst year, Deron still put up .575 TS% and 118 ORtg. Nothing to sneeze at there.

deron will come back when we get wigzz or jazzbari, and ty moves on. Deron loves him some flex action and screen and rolls. its all taking shape now.

When he's done I want him to come back and coach Hayward and any young guys on the team.

I have a feeling he would be a great developmental coach.

You guys know he has a house in Utah still?

He will be too old and broke down to do anything when Jazzbari is ready to win titles. Lets just keep Burke.

Deron has chronic wrist and ankle problems.

I know this because it is reported in the NY/NJ media ad nauseam whenever he isn't playing well. I think he was in a better system for him when he was in Utah (which he admitted last season) but he also is not the same player he was in Utah. In 2008 he was one of the best players in the NBA - let alone the best PG. He's clearly not the same player now.

He has said himself he's a system guy. Where he is now just doesn't cater to his style of play. The injuries don't help either. I wish Deron well, but it's kind of ironic, ain't it? He seemed so miserable here at the end, and now how happy can he be? I voted that the system overrated his skills, but I don't think that is necessarily true. His skills matched the Jazz system, but I wouldn't go so far as to say he was overrated. I just don't think a team like the Nets is the best fit for him.

I am surprised so many voted he was just a system guy. They dude was top 10 player in the league easily for a couple years with us, that isn't system Did Sloan and the Jazz style enable him to more easily display his talents? Of course, but the guy was an Olympian, and it wasn't even debatable.
Since later in his Jazz days I didn't like his, IMO, diva attitude. But to say he was just a system guy seems like someone has hurt feelings.

I bet he is super happy. He lives in the greatest city on earth, makes a butte load of money, and his best friend is his coach. He just probably won't be happy when Prokhorov orders a hit on him after they miss the playoffs this season.

Yeah I guess he's happy if that's all he cares about. So yeah, maybe he is.
