This board has started to over-use the concepts of "first option," "second option," etc. More people need to realize how often first options need to be set up by a ballhandler. Hayward is good at that. You dont get a wing who's "third" in terms of buckets but who's great in transition, good at defense, and excellent at feeding others for less than 10 mil.

They're seeing what happens when Hay's role is expanded. His lack of a pull-up jumper and inconsistent finishing is proving that his role needs to be trimmed. Fine. He's still a great piece. We're getting ready to define his role and his value.

This ^ right here. It's obvious that this team does not have a good coach or a #1 scoring option. I like the potential for all of the young guys to fill key roles or develop into stars if they add those two things. Because of this, I'm waiting until next year before I make up my mind of who they should build around or move on from.
 
Really tough to evaluate Hayward on this crappy team.

Even Lebron, Durants 1st 1-2 years being goto guy were horrible shooting. Takes a process. Remember not too long ago Lebron couldn't shoot in the 4th ?

With all that said, I think Hayward is a unique player , a tier 2 in his prime, tier 3 type option.

I think **someone will off 11-12 / year.

Jazz will need to decide if they want to match. No big deal it's a business.

No way het gets a MAX.

He has always been a slow starter, looking at his numbers from the beginning of last season, it looks pretty similar to what he has been doing this year. Obviously any poor performance will get a lot more focus from now on as the training wheels are off.

I agree with this. I do think this adds to the argument that he isn't worth what he and his agent think he is though. Inconsistency really shouldn't be rewarded.
 
For 11 or 12 on a four year deal, I think you match. I think he's shown that he's a solid complimentary player and a solid 2nd/3rd option. Burke, Favors, Hayward and a top wing player from the draft sounds like a really good start toward building a legitimate playoff team. If Kanter/Gobert and/or Burks/Neto show anything. . . it's a bonus.
 
I think Hayward is struggling being such a focus this year.

Get Parker or Wiggins on this team, and make Hayward the 3rd option, and he will thrive again.

Here is the problem for Hayward: if Utah would match a 4 year/12 per deal, and that is overpaying him, then no team will offer it to him. The only way you offer him a contract as a restricted FA is if you think you will get him. If the only way you will get him is to max him out, then no one will offer him a deal. I see Gordon sitting around next year waiting for a deal but not getting one.

I then see him signing a contract that starts at 9 per with Utah.
 
Honestly if I'm Lindsey and Hayward is hell stuck on a 8 figure deal I'd trade him. We had the same problem with Eric Gordon a couple years back. He wanted a max deal and wasn't even healthy enough to play for the team the whole year. Dell Demps decided not to trade him instead he gambled that no team would offer him the max and sure enough as all it takes is one GM the Suns signed him to a max deal and we were pressured to match. Now we are stuck with Gordon at a salary well beyond his impact or production. Moral of the story is it's better to be proactive than reactive and over paying usually doesn't work out.
