My buddy needs one. He teaches high school and has a ton of books with this theme. But he'd like one with a female protagonist. Anyone?

I told him The Awakening by Chopin which I absolutely love and it was first published in 1899 which to me is close enough. Anyone else?

Diary of Anne Frank - been ages since I read it but it's certainly worthwhile and I think deals with the idea of a young girl trying to figure out her identity (albeit under extremely trying circumstances)

But no, seriously, there are hundreds of novels that fit this criteria. The last one I've read -- and it's one of the best best best, is 'The Particular Sadness of Lemon-Cake' by the great Aimee Bender.

The sad thing is, the girly Justin Bieber could and will get more tail than Wilt Chamberlain.

Hey I hope that kid is enjoying all the perks of fame that he can. I saw that "Shaq vs." episode this summer that featured Bieber, and they showed some of his concert footage (cameras panned across the crowd)...aside from the screaming 12 year old girls, there were some amazing looking moms.

Hunger Games was good if you're still into young adult fiction. And by that I mean the plot pushes the boundaries only as much as you'd expect a young adult would able to handle.
