When you rep someone, you give them positive rep points based on your rep power, and there's some fancy formula that determines your rep power based on rep points, time on the site, number of posts and stuff like that.

If you go into settings you can see all the reps you've received, if you didn't know that. And obviously you can see them via the notifications.
