I only have a couple legit complaints about the game.
Like most every body else, I didn't agree with BYU going for it on 4th down. If BYU kicks that field goal, they likely win. Think Bronco is regretting that?
Those last three running plays. What the hell? Leave it up to this Payne to win it with a 40 yard field goal? Did they forget which Payne was kicking? This wasn't one of his older brother. With almost a minute left, why not try to gain another ten yards to make the FG easier? This is one example of how BYU being conservative costs them a game.
To me, Hoffman (#2 for BYU) seemed disinterested throughout the game. I watched him on one kickoff that he didn't get. He literally ran by 4 or 5 Ute defenders and not even think about blocking them. He wasn't being aggressive in going for balls.

Overall, the game was very fun to watch. Do I think BYU's Bradley was down before he fumbled? Yes. But I can see how it wasn't overturned. I also think that if he'd been ruled down before he fumbled and then been reviewed, it would have stood that way as well. Was Rich's tackle a horsecollar? Maybe. His hand was on the back of the neck, but his other hand, and his body, were to the side. I don't know exactly what constitutes a horse collar tackle (and I don't think the announcers do either).

The worst part about this game is having to listen to the certain Ute fans pound their chests talking about how much better Utah is than BYU and how they could have competed for a PAC 10 title this year. As if this game is proof of either.

Word. After I hyped him on this board, he couldn't even run a proper route yesterday. I hope he was sick or something, because it was the exact opposite in the other games this year. He was usually the one being ultra aggressive, going after every ball, etc. He was leading the country in kickoff returns. He should be a good one for BYU over the next 3 years though.

I agree. Other than this game, I've really like him.

I'm a huge Ute homer (as if anybody reading this board would not know that :)). And I must say after this game any Ute fan acting like that is delusional. Utah was extremely lucky to win this game Utah and would have been at best 2nd in the pac-10 probably more like 3rd or 4th. This team has some real problems that did not show up until they played some real competition. Like DB's that can't stop the pass, and a QB afraid to throw into even loose coverage.

I think the LVB is locked in with the MWC, don't they? So if they get ND they more or less have to take Utah. Utah may have the opportunity to decline, especially since they have no ties with the MWC after this year. Had they stayed in the conference, they probably wouldn't want to ruffle feathers.

But I'm pretty sure that the LVB can't just get ND and forget the Utes. The Utes have to actually decline the LVB, which may be unwise since it might be the best bowl they're offered.

The problem lies with the pac-10.
The main reason why ND is even in the discussion is because the pac-10 only has 2 eligible teams. Check it out:

https://espn.go.com/college-football/conferences/standings/_/id/9/pacific-10-conference

1. Oregon, going to the National Championship
2. Stanford ranked #6

All the rest of the teams have 4 wins (need at least 6 right?) or less disqualifying them from bowl games.

That's why ND is even in the discussion. Utah has to play someone eligible.

Who are the possible suitors for the Vegas Bowl? Any ideas? Maybe Nevada?

The pac-10 should get to 4 eligible teams but it's highly questionable if they get to 5. Your looking at the wrong line though. Oregon, Stanford and Arizona all have 7+ wins. Washington and arizona state are at 5 with 1 game left each and Oregon state has 5 but they play Oregon for their last game and are unlikely to win. So if either Washington or Arizona state win they get to 6 wins and Bowl eligible. USC also has 7 wins but they are ineligible for a bowl due to sanctions against them they would be the 5th bowl team usually.

So they have 3 eligible right now with 3 others having a shot to become eligible though 1 of them is unlikely. I don't know who Arizona State or Washington play so who knows if they get there.

Personally, I'd relish the opportunity for revenge - I still think that Utah is a better team than ND - but I am doubtful it happens. If LVB can get Notre Dame, they would likely pursue some other team, rather than stage a rematch.

I wonder which players on BYU aren't living right...obviously O'Neill Chambers and Harvey Unga weren't acting alone.

Lmao you edited it they my quote of you shows up before your post. How weird.

LOL.

This edit function is messed up.

I guess the pac-10 then could produce an opponent for the Utes.

Just as a fan of cities, I'd much rather g2 the bowl BYU might g2 in San Diego. Better weather, cleaner city, and beautiful beach over Vegas.

A few comments on some of the more popular topics:

-Going for it on 4th down: Right call for the Utes, wrong call for BYU. Let's remember, Utah's 4th down play didn't take points off the board for Utah. Yes, they were at midfield, but the Ute's D was doing a great job and Whit had to try and jumpstart that offense somehow. I liked the decision. While Bronco doesn't run the offense I'm sure he has final say on whether to go for it or not. EVERYBODY involved with the Rivalry knows that points are at a premium. It was the wrong decision, and it ultimately made the difference between BYU winning or losing this game.

-Jordan Wynn: I'm really torn on this kid. For the record, I agree with just about every negative that is being said about him right now. In fact, even during the early part of the season when Utah was rolling, I was in here voicing my concerns about the kid. The problem is, us Ute fans were calling for Brian Johnson's head for most of his career and now he's probably set to go down as the greatest Ute ever. We'll see what another year of maturing does for him, but I don't think Utah should stand pat at QB. Go and get a recruit who can actually provide a running threat in this spread offense, and in spring/fall ball, give Griff Robels every chance to win the job as well. I really like Griff and think he may be the best QB on the roster as we speak. However, Utah just can't throw in the towell on Wynn. Had they done that with Johnson, there would have been no 2nd BCS season and no Sugar Bowl victory.

-Idiot fans: There's 2 types out there right now: Utah fans who are thumping their chests claiming to be much better than BYU and some BYU fans who feel like they lost even though they outplayed Utah. As far as the Utah fans go: Get over it and deal with the fact that Utah has limped to the finish line. Some things are broken with Wynn and that Utah offense. Maybe a month off for a Bowl game is just what this team needs to straighten things out. And Cougar fans who think BYU outplayed Utah: Utah outgained and outscored BYU. My own opinion, but I don't think either team clearly stood above the other. It seemed to be equal shares of futility mixed in with very brief flashes of good football if you ask me.

-The Rivalry: Look, we all take shots at each other in here, but let's face it: There is not a rivalry on the face of the planet that lives up to the hype like this one. Over the last 20 years, it's been so amazing for both sets of fans that we should step back and count our blessings. Cougar fans have Austin 4:18, Ute fans have the 2 huge BCS year blowouts. Utah has the 34-31 years, BYU fans have last year's OT Classic. BYU fans have Harline is still open and Utah fans now have Burton is still unblocked (I stole that from a few pages earlier).

It's a helluva ride that has given equal amounts of euphoria and heartbreak to everybody involved, and quite honestly it wouldn't be as fun if it were any other way. Sure, the Utes got this one, but I know one thing for sure: On September 17, 2011 there's going to be another game, and by the end of it we'll all have a few more gray hairs.

See you next year, you ********.

Hopefully you know this is only the most ridiculous of ute homers. I think the vast majority of us are pretty realistic about where Utah stands and it's strength relative to the rest of the college football world.

A couple of interesting quotes about BYU's decision to go for it as opposed to kicking the FG:

Bronco:
“I didn’t make the [play] call, but I did make the call to go for it,”

Doesn't really sound like a coach who has Anea's back if you ask me. I'm suprised how much BYU protected Heaps in this game. Utah's secondary had been putrid the 3 prior games and it wasn't like this was Heaps' first start as a Freshman. I don't think you go out and get the best QB prospect in the nation only to keep him under wraps during the last and biggest game of the season. I have to wonder if Anea will be back, but as a Ute fan I hope he is. I think he holds back BYU's offensive potential.

Assistant Coach Lance Reynolds:

"We should have kicked the field goal. I have no idea what the thinking was there."

I agree with him, but I'm sure glad that Bronco/Anea made the collective boneheaded decision. I'm immediately putting both on my Christmas Card list.

I was at the game and to me it looked like we beat our biggest rivals on a last second epic field goal block after being down 13-0 going into the 4th qtr, and I also heard rumblings of us being invited to the Pac 12, Conference of Champions.

Then I read this thread and realized we just got all lucky and stuff and our QB sucks and I suck and its not even cool to win 10 games in a season anymore and our coaches suck and snow sucks cuz it gets you cold and we barely won so that sucks and all our qb's are the suck and that we wont do good in the 12 pac cuz we suck basically byu won if you think bout it cuz we suck and anyone who celebrates this win sucks and stuff and remember all those 2 games we lost this season and we got scored on in lots of games with the other teams touchdowns and dont get excited about pac 12 we gots no qaurterbacks and now were are screwed i dont like football.

Those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

The best part of this thread is that Utah has received at least six (and counting) votes since the game ended. It was 14-11 when I noticed the results last night. Way to go out on a limb, you six.
