I don't know if it's a smokescreen, but everything I read about lower back stress fractures has been that it's not career altering/threatening. That other big guys with nagging injuries(that he currently getts compared to) had them in their knees and guys with back problems didn't have a stress fracture but more spinal problems and chronic back spasm stuff.
So I'll rather wait for him to set a precedent case and the medical exams at the draft combine or wherever they are taken will give the team's physicians enough intel about his situation. If there's something really dangerous he'll drop on draft night below 5. If he stays in it then the teams will be confident that it's only a temporal situation.
But I get how the media wants to make a big story about it, since it's a very slow point of the season media coverage wise until March Madness unleashes.
