When Boise State played several midweek football games this season on national TV, the Utah Utes often would gather and watch the Broncos play.

Now all that informal scouting is going to be put to good use.

The No. 21 Utes (10-2) will be paired with the No. 9 Broncos in the Dec. 22 Las Vegas Bowl. The announcement won’t be made official until the Broncos are released from BCS consideration sometime Sunday.

Boise State (11-1) wrapped up its season Saturday with a 50-14 win over Utah State.

thoughts?

I think Utah drew a bad hand here. Boise was two fluke FGs away from going to a BCS bowl. I won't be shocked to see them stomp a mudhole in the Utes.

With Utah's defensive schemes and lack of adjustment, Boise State should put up 40+. With Cain running the offense and practicing with the first unit, Utah might be able to match. It's a bad draw for the Utes, but I thought Alabama was a bad draw, too.

Utah's bowl winning streak gets snapped. But I thought that would happen in the Sugar Bowl.

Utah's best chance to compete in this game? IMO they need to utilize the fact that Cain will be in there for Wynn. Make Boise St. defend a true spread offense. If Cain can protect the ball, he gives Utah a huge upside over Wynn in this game. Boise St will have to respect aspects of the Utah offense they normally wouldn't have had to. Utah's gonna need every sinlge little thing they can possibly get.

Well this is definitely a BCS caliber game.

I think Cain starting will actually be a good thing for the Utes. He's a legitimate threat to run the ball. If Boise has to respect his running ability, it will open up the pass.

I hope the Utes give him the green light to run when he can, and he doesn't dive down a yard or 2 short of the first down, or run out of bounds a yard or 2 short of the first down.

I'm also thinking Asiata and Wide should be able to run on these guys.

The only thing I'm really worried about is Moore getting all day to throw the ball. Even under pressure he is pretty good at running out of the pocket and hitting an open receiver. But if he has all day to survey the field he is going to kill us.

Moore is also very good at reading the defense before the snap. We'll need to come up with some trickery on the defensive side of the ball to keep Moore guessing. We can't have him knowing which receiver will be open before the ball is even snapped.

All in all, I have faith the Utes coaching staff can come up with a good game plan. Talent wise Boise isn't any better than Utah. Utah may even have more NFL players on the roster when it's all said and done. Wynn's running game and freezing under pressure were some pretty major vulnerabilities that defenses have been exploiting recently (BYU had 8 guys in coverage most of the game). So with Cain's running ability we should be able to move the ball similar to earlier in the season.

Boise was literally inches away from a BCS game. Utah, not so much. But I believe we can compete in this one, Cain looked rusty as hell vs. BYU but will be given time to prepare knowing he is the guy. As a senior I'd hope he is well motivated to perform well in his last collegiate game. Same goes for our running back's Asiata & Wide. Whittingham always talks about sending the seniors out right, so you'd expect the utes to play with some fire. We will need to put up points to keep up with that offense who will probably want to jump on us early. We gotta hope the defense can get some stops along the way.

It will be one of the more interesting match ups of all the bowl games. I just hope Utah can stay in it.

This game is almost as interesting as BYU vs. UTEP.....

Man this is probably the 2nd toughest bowl game the U's ever had (Bama being the first) unfortunately good chance the bowl streak comes to an end and 100% chance that I'll be watching, yelling and trying unsuccessfully not too curse however.

Well this is definitely a BCS caliber game.

Man, I am a Ute fan thru and thru, and I will be cheering them on as best I can (hopefully in LV, if I can iron out a few schedule kinks), but this is a little over the top.

Utah is not a BCS caliber squad this season. I think they can compete with Boise, if they can keep their **** together and not make the mistakes they have been making the last several weeks. But even then, Boise is a tough draw. They don't have to play a perfect game to beat us.

That being said, this has the potential to be a great game. Utah MUST show up, though.

It's not over the top at all. The Vegas Bowl has a better matchup than at least 1, possibly 2 BCS Bowls. Here is what Stewart Mandel of ESPN tweeted out on Saturday after he leaked all the BCS matchups:

Anyone else think the Boise State-Utah Vegas Bowl will be more interesting than 2 of the BCS games I just said?

If you don't think this game is BCS caliber, then THAT is what's over the top.

What if I happen to think that Utah will not show up? Is that game still BCS "caliber" in my mind? How is it "over the top" to think that it will not be BCS worthy?

See what I did there? The difference is I have history on my side. Boise State has a history of poor showings in bowl games, and Utah has the longest bowl winning steak in the nation.

I agree with Salty here. Boise is a much better team than Oklahoma and Utah is a better team than UCONN. I'd also argue that a Boise/Utah game is a better game than Stanford/Virginia Tech.

My poor Utes are going to get Krispy Kremed. I wish this were a BCS bowl game two years ago. Then it would have been a little more even, and would have meant something.

BSU 47 Utah 10

Utah gets creamed by at least 3 touchdowns. The only thing BCS caliber about this game is BSU. The other team didn't even win their own conference and was 3 seconds away from being in the New Mexico Bowl.

Well this is definitely a BCS caliber game.

I stopped reading right here. Seriously. Salty, get a ****ing clue. Utah's a nobody. They got pummeled by Notre ****ing Dame who hasn't been relevant in over a decade the week after they got their butts kicked at home, TCU or not. I don't give a **** how few losses combined these two teams have. This isn't a BCS caliber bowl game and anyone demonstrating any objectivity knows it.
