I'm thinking purchasing a VPN service because of the latest internet censorship in Turkey. My question to the Jazzfanz people, do you have any recommendations for a cheap gloabal VPN service that you used or know about and how is it like to use it, speed and security wise.

And my question to the mods and Jason.. Would I get banned or flagged for using a VPN service on Jazzfanz? Cause as I understand it changes the location of the user and I don't want to bother myself with turning the VPN on and off when I login Jazzfanz.

As far as I'm aware, there is nothing wrong with surfing Jazzfanz while on a proxy-- but if they see more than one account traced back to a single IP, then they'll ban both. I can't imagine the mods having a problem with someone masking their IP if they always use the same account, particularly if they're doing so for political reasons
 
We don't care if you use a proxy or a VPN. We don't allow multiple accounts is all.

Moving to Gen Discussion. I like StrongVPN.com.

I have to use a vpn particularly for youtube(unfortunately banned) which I use intensively for my works/projects. Anyway, apparently Jasons don't care a vpn so no problem. Except more money to spend on internet, sigh..

Ten years from now I imagine this will be taking place in only the most extreme places or for the most extreme websites. I have a buddy that lives in China and from what he tells me the censorship is more of a statement of power than it is actual censorship. At a certain point most countries will have to realize they are fighting a battle they cannot win.

It sucks you have to spend more. I know someone that uses one quite heavily(he uses quite a lot of bandwidth) I will ask him who he uses.

That's just what is beyond me. They're just fighting a lost battle and it is only effective against their own supporters. For instance, twitter was also banned till a week ago but it was totally meaningless as all the anti-government people were still using twitter as much as they did before through proxies and all.

Mine is $30 plus mobile internet which is variable.

But what's your internet speeds? My $30 is for only 16 Mbps, plus there is a stupid quota, after your downloaded data exceeds 50 GB, they reduce your speed to 3 Mbps! That's called "fair usage quota", or smth like that. On top of everything, the upload speeds in Turkey suck. I mean really suck.. For instance mine is only 1 Mbps!!! Besides hours of pain while uploading large files, 1 Mbps upload speed means no chance of using any cloud based technology whatsoever which would be very very useful for me.

I also have to pay for mobile internet because I'm constantly moving for the most of the year and I can't do without internet. But thankfully it's kinda a prepaid system so I only pay as I use it. Still, I won't tell how much I'm paying for it because it gets to embarrassing levels sometimes.

Anyway, a quick survey says the average internet download speed in US doubles the average download speed here in Turkey and the average upload speeds are 7.5 and 3.2 Mbps respectively.

Now, these are all BEFORE the VPN too. So I bet yours is much better considering the price–performance ratio. :)

Thanks for the advice, we are doing it. I didn't do it in the Gezi events(my father didn't want me to get into the politics) but now he's gone, I've been doing it. I've already experienced the police baton and pepper spray.

But again thanks for your advice.

it is sad to see a minority(the government) controls the majority(the people), it pisses me off

OK, no problem then. Agreed on that, one should always stick up for his/her rights, because when you don't, there is no limit to how far the oppressors will go.
 
just a quick bump of this .. what are good VPN services currently ? Haven't used on before so not familiar with all that's out there cheers in advance

I've used PIA for years without any issues.
