Dennis Lindsey "scouting" in Europe

Good post. I am sure that there are three objectives while over there. Messina, Neto and 23rd pick scouting.

Maybe talk to Tomic, also?

(I wonder if picking Messina for a coach would make Tomic more interested in coming over.)

Europe isn't a country, it's a continent. Messina may or may not be involved. Info is very vague.

I hope they are disguised as some scouts from the Lakers and convincing Hozenja to declare this year so we can snag him at 23.

Wiggins and Hozenja. Dreams.

Planned scouting trip well in advance. Released Corbin yesterday (metaphorically).

Doubt they're connected.

That doesn't have to mean they're not connected.

Dennis said at the press conference that now that Ty is gone, he'll have to move quickly to get together with his team and come up with a list of possible candidates. If that is true, why then would he suddenly go on a scouting trip for the #23 pick? (i.e., our own pick is likely to be an American).

Yes he could have the trip planned well in advance. But that could also mean he had "Ty's firing" had been planned well in advance, and he had planned to meet Messina in advance also. The Press Conference was just a formality really - when he said he doesn't have any coaches in mind, pretty much all the media was calling his bluff on that, even Locke.

I do believe this is the strongest indication yet that Dennis is seriously considering Messina.

So the most complicated solution is the correct one? Pfft.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lindsay would want to take advantage of the situation and try to meet with Messina during his scouting trip, but I doubt it would be pre-meditated.

"Let's see here...I know I'm gonna fire Corbin after the season, and I don't want people thinking I already have a name chosen, so I'm gonna leak Boylen's name out there immediately after the press conference I'm gonna schedule on the Monday after Easter and say that we hadn't made the decision on Corbin until that day and also say we haven't had any discussion on coaches, schedule a bogus scouting trip to Europe and use it as a cover to meet secretly with Messina even though he's currently coaching his team in playoffs." A PERFECT PLAN.

Did someone really ask if he speaks English? Really! Really!

I would really hope DL is smart enough to only consider coaches that can actually communicate easily with players and management. Worst question ever brought up on jazzfanz

Wow!

My thoughts exactly. He was an assistant coach with the Lakers under Mike Brown for a season, so I'm operating under the assumption he can speak English.

Yes I think that's exactly the scenario.

We don't have a HC. NY, LA and Minny don't have a HC. The clock is ticking.

And you think the first thing DL does after our HC is gone is get on the plane to scout our #23 pick? That's too much of a stretch for me. I think the main purpose of this trip is to meet Messina, but he might do some scouting on the side also.

Burke, Burks, Hayward, Kanter, Favors, #4 pick, Neto, tomic, gobert, other FA. Could be a scary team with the correct coach. If Messina is hired, he's going to work the crap out of our guys. From what I've read is he really pushes his players. Might be good for them after having Corbin and being undisciplined.

When would be the best time for Lindsay to scout European prospects? When the season is over?

That's not the point. It's how you prioritise your time. Lindsey has been on record as saying he isn't even sure about keeping all 3 picks this year given all the youngsters we already have on our team. Timing is the main thing here given that there are also other teams without a HC competing with us.

Which do you think is more important right now? Finding our new "Leader" (as DL calls it), or scout for the #23 pick?

Don't think Hezonja would declare this year because he can really go top 5 the next season. He'll be better than Saric in my opinion.

This year however, if we are gonna consider a Euro, Bogdan Bogdanovic is the guy to pick at 23. Great value for a late first round pick and you can stash him in Europe if we don't need him right away. I can imagine Messina approving him.

well thank you for that nice compliment young man

True story: on my first business trip to Amsterdam, I flew alone, intending to meet up with colleagues who had flown before or would arrive later. I was worried about not being able to get around or make myself understood. First store I go into I timidly ask one of the clerks, "do you speak English?" With a slight air of scorn, he replies back, with a distinctly British accent, "of course I do." I told that story to a co-worker who was from The Netherlands. She explained to me that almost everyone speaks English there, especially in Amsterdam. And wherever I've traveled since (mostly western Europe), I've had no problem communicating.

And no, my business there had nothing to do with marijuana or the red light district.

Maybe, just maybe, Lindsey doesn't want three rookies on the team next year and Neto. Maybe, just maybe, he would like to find another AK to take at #23 and then leave in Europe for a couple of years. Maybe.

Yeah but does he have to do that now? Surely finding the right coach is now the priority, not pussyfooting around with the #23 pick (that we might not even keep).

Timing is crucial. You're right!

When can Lindsay recruit in Europe? ONLY now.

When can Lindsay search for a new coach? 'Til the summer league.

And I'm sure Lindsay has to ONLY be in his office to get a head coach. The Jazz haven't discovered teleconferencing or email yet.

I'm pretty sure Lindsey would want to lock up a coach well before the draft so the coach can have a say in who we draft. The history supports this - Ty had a huge say in the Trey Burke's decision. It's how Lindsey operates.

Plus - who better to "scout" Euroleague with than Messina? You kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Most Europeans I've met call it speaking American. I find this both funny and accurate
