What's new

Where is that pit bull thread when I need it?

If that were to happen do you feel that adequately addresses the potential danger that a pitbull can present?

No. We have lots of crimes that people get punished for. It doesn't stop new criminals from joining in. But it is better than nothing, which is what we have now.

What is might do is make a stronger divide between the "bad owners" and the "pooky was a loving family dog who would never hurt a fly" group. You would get just as many of the former and hopefully fewer of the latter, so it may reduce the overall number of attacks.

Cause they're badass bro.

I definitely think that there are some dogs that are more inclined to be dangerous for others…and training plays a huge role in preventing those attacks. So when you have these people that are less than intelligent, it just seems obvious there's a good chance they aren't going to get the training they need.

training is the only thing that makes a dog "good" or "bad"

Sorry bro but genetics can play a part too.

My dog is a mix between an austrailian cattle dog and a healer..... i have never once trained him to herd, yet he does it anyway because it is what his breeds were bred for. It is instinct.

If you get a lab or a golden retriever then chances are it will love to fetch (retrieve) things whether you train it to or not.

Pitbulls were bred to fight/be attack dogs. Its in thier genes whether you train them or not.

Sighthounds are bred to chase things they see, scenthounds and bred to follow by smell. We haver had one of each. The whippet would run off chasing anything it saw moving fast, no matter how much we worked on obedience, and the harrier would take off at a moments notice to find that random ground squirrel. Often instinct has a much stronger effect than training ever can. How else do you explain the pitbull that was a wonderful family dog that out of the blue attacked a baby in a baby carrier and killed it?

FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!

most trusted and protective dogs and i had a lot in my youth.

Protective means more aggressive. Call a spade a spade man.

Pitbulls were not bred for protection, they were bred specifically to fight. They were not bred as guard dogs, but as "pit" dogs, to kill other dogs in pit fights.

From wiki:

The Pit Bull Terrier was created by breeding Old English Terriers and Old English Bulldogs together to produce a dog that combined the gameness of the terrier with the strength and athleticism of the bulldog.[6] These dogs were bred in England, and arrived in the United States where they became the direct ancestors of the American Pitbull Terrier. In the United Kingdom pit bulls were used in bloodsports such as bull baiting, bear baiting and **** fighting. These bloodsports were officially eliminated in 1835 as Britain began to introduce animal welfare laws. Since dogfights were cheaper to organise and far easier to conceal from the law than bull or bear baits, bloodsport proponents turned to pitting their dogs against each other instead. Dog fighting was used as both a bloodsport (often involving gambling) and a way to continue to test the quality of their stock. For decades afterwards, dog fighting clandestinely took place in small areas of Britain and America. In the early 20th century pitbulls were used as catch dogs in America for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt, and drive livestock, and as family companions.[6] Some have been selectively bred for their fighting prowess.[7][8]

So we agree then (this is what i said in the post you quoted..... genetics and instincts overrule training sometimes)

FOJ is killing it in this thread.

It's interesting that you pretty much only hear the "no bad dogs, only bad owners" argument in regard to Pitbulls. Perhaps Pitbulls simply require only the greatest dog owners/trainers in the world. If you own a Pitbull, you'd better not be just a mediocre owner or you will ultimately be labeled a bad owner when your dog attacks somebody. Where with nearly every other breed, you can be a mediocre owner and you'll be just fine.

My little brother, who also happens to be a dog lover, would probably say I'm one of the ****tiest dog owners he knows. My dog is always outside, doesn't get much attention, pretty much only leaves the backyard in the fall when I take him hunting (and occasionally when my kids take him on a 'walk'), he's not trained to do anything other than the few things that are necessary for a bird dog, etc. Credit to my brother, he's a pretty nice guy and just let's it be. My point -- despite the fact that many people would be disgusted with the type of dog owner I am and would definitely classify me as a bad owner, my dog has never, and I guarantee my dog will never, bite anybody. Genetics, indeed.

Solid post :-)

I must spread some rep before giving more to seattlejazzfan.

I have a pair of beagles, and the only way we have ever gotten them to stop barking at people outside our door/yard is to use one of those devices that emits a painful (to dogs) sound when they bark (we use it on trips when we are in a motel). I don't know if beagles were raised as guard dogs, but they'll do in a pinch.

Right now I have a female Rotlab puppy (3 months) named Nana (yes peter pan). She seems to have the best qualities of both. Friendly, happy and can just be crawled all over by the kids like a lab. Then just the other day a random friend showed up that she had never meet. That friend made a sudden jerk movement towards my baby. I'll be damned if Nana didn't let that friend know that they better be damned careful around HER baby. Got that rot protectfulness.

Then we have Gizmo a little ugly dauchtsun(spelling) and ****zu mix. looks like a terrier and he wont ever bite but you aprroach the house after dark or open a window or door when he isn't ready and he makes sure everyone knows about it. he does tours of all my bedrooms and living room about 4-5 times a night. Just making sure.

Got my alarm system and my home protection system.

OB just reminded me how much I hated our beagle growing up. Damn thing never stopped barking.

I freaking hate yipping dogs.

like thats bad

It can be ....

JC is right. Tell it to this little girl Dutch:

https://gazette.com/girl-maimed-by-pit-bull-coming-to-terms-with-appearance/article/101610

Six-year-old Meagan Garrow told her mom she didn’t want to see her face — severely damaged Monday when a pit bull attacked her — until she was 10.

The dog, which was euthanized, tore through Meagan’s cheeks, exposing her teeth, bit off one of her nostrils and tore off so much flesh around one of her eyes that Riedel feared her daughter would lose the eye. After a four-hour surgery and hundreds of stitches, the outlook is more promising.
