What's new

Where is that pit bull thread when I need it?

The biggest problem with pit bulls is that typically less than intelligent people are the ones who own them.

But I do not see that as justification to ban them? If so then where do we draw the line at what dangerous things to ban?

I dont know if they should be banned (maybe though)
But could they be regulated somehow?

Make the breeders have special liscenses and make it illegal to sell to felons or something?

I dont know the answer but as of now, pits seem to hurts lots of things more often than any other dog.

Im curious as to why someone chooses pitbull when getting a dog.
There are lots of breeds of dogs... why go with the pitbull?

The difference is a gun left alone with no one provoking it will not walk up to a baby carrier and kill the baby.

And that sounds like anything but a bad owner.

Again, there are far too many stories that do not fit the "only bad owners" scenario.

I agree with this.
Why do those people choose then though?

Is it because they are cuddly and loving?
or is it due to thier reputation of being dangerous?

this also happens with other dogs.

Far far less often than with pitbulls. That has already been shown in this thread. Pitbulls by a fairly large margin do the most damage of any breed.

Good question. I am sure there are a ton of different reasons. But a major one being their rep as we have discussed.

Control the breed somehow short of banning? I think that would be a much more logical and effective conversation. I think the opposition to a ban would greatly diminish when it shifts from bans to control.

Perhaps the passing of laws that hit the owner of a pitbull involved in an attack in some way? Fines, community service, jailtime? Then there is the potential to put down the animal itself, short of the animal being involved in an attack defending from a crime. Like a home invasion and the pit of the house attacks the criminal.

I agree with this.

just like op they are not educated/informed on pitbulls.
and go on "bad" rep.

2 sides of the same coin.

both ignorant.

Cause they're badass bro.

I definitely think that there are some dogs that are more inclined to be dangerous for others…and training plays a huge role in preventing those attacks. So when you have these people that are less than intelligent, it just seems obvious there's a good chance they aren't going to get the training they need.

So how do you "control" for the tons of stories of "my little Pooky never hurt a fly and is the nicest dog ever" right after that dog killed some baby?

Perhaps "seen" was not the appropriate word or phrase. My mistake. I should have said "seen reports". I myself was attacked by a german sheppard.

I do not deny that pits have an increased ability to be violent. Just at what point do we draw the line on what we do and do not allow people to own? I am not sure that banning a breed of animal that is a common pet is something I want to support.

For me it is more about controling, or not controling, what others can and cannot do or own more than it is about pitbulls.

I agree and i dont know what the answer is.
I just see the problem. I wish i knew the answer.

banning stuff sucks but i think there might be times when its the best thing to do. I dont know if thi is one of those times.

Im all about freedom (legalize teh pot already) i have no problem with gay marriage and basically anything that dont hurt anyone.

All good points.

@Log - perhaps the certainty of legal reprecusions beyond a civil suit for owners would decrease the number of idiots that just run out and get a pit. Then offer no training and control to the animal and just let it run free. Less demand would lead to less pits which would lead to less attacks.

I don't have a good answer.

This is a tough subject for me because i am seriously the biggest dog lover in the world.

And i have know some pitbulls that were really nice to me and were good dogs. (Even the one that killed my cat was actually a really nice dog. I mean i dont blame it for killing my cat... most dogs will try to kill a cat. I was pissed it was roaming the streets and then jumped our fence but that wasnt because it was a pitbull. My cat was seriously the coolest cat ever doe :'()

I just feel that there are so many amazing dogs out there that if pits were non existant, the world would still have lots and lots of wonderful dogs in it...... with less attacks by dogs

Decent idea stoked.

My neighbors whose pitbull jumped our fence and killed our cat had to pay us alot of money..... after thier dog died from complication in that attack, they went out and got a new dog for thier family. A black lab. They love thier new dog and probably will never have to pay someone for thier dog attacking something again.

p.s. the neighbor im speaking of got the pit when he was in his early 20's and was kind of a gangbanger.

When the pit died he was a little older (about 30) and had matured a bit more and probably realized that having a "bad ***" dog was no longer as important as having a good dog as part of his family.

That has come up in this thread already I believe. And I agree that the owner should be charged with a crime exactly as if they had performed the act with malice aforethought themselves.

If that were to happen do you feel that adequately addresses the potential danger that a pitbull can present?
