Following potential 2014 draftees

*Darren Collison and maybe he was talking about Exum as well? Who knows, I would be alright with drafting Smart, dude is a shut down defender.

Right Darren, thanks. Am watching the OKC game. Smart has gotten bigger and stronger in the last year. He goes hard to the rim. Locke mentioned Smart specifically. It was pretty obvious that he was doing a bit of a plug for Smart.

I heard Locke on this topic on 1280 and he was noting that Exum is a player that should be included in teh "top 4" like there is a "top 3" meaning they are all interchangable or debateable as to where they will be drafted. He also touched on this topic that the Jazz will take the best player available and that by drafting a guard is by no means a reference to burke not being good enough. The 2-guard plan is definately a trend and that "outside-in" is the way to play. Teams need two guards(players) who can execute high pick and roll becauase it will be run twice on the same possession to be one more step ahead of the rotating defense. BTW Hayward is decent at PnR and could fit in this plan as well. I thought Burks was getting some proficiency at PnR as well at the end. (Maybe he always had it, he just slashed all the time.)

Finally, it is very likely that Locke will be part of the smoke screen devices that will begin spewing shortly. He was saying that "Exum could be the #1 pick in the draft" in that tone of how surprizing things can be... I think the May 20 to Jun26 time frame will be entertaining.

Smart's decision making and passing seem to have improved. I think he is an upgrade at PG over Burke, tbh. Just wish he could shoot better, but maybe he'll develop that. He's a tough bruiser that will wear a defense down, collapse the D, and draw a fair number of fouls. Also, a good drive-and-kick player.

I couldn't disagree more. What Smart showed me was an inability to do much of anything in a halfcourt offense. Not an upgrade.

He can do some other stuff Burke can't doe.

I've been saying this about Smart/Exum for some time.

They can both guard NBA 2's, and a two PG system has worked for several teams. Hell, Memphis went on a roll with Connley/Udrih just minutes ago.

We could make either work with Burke, IMO.

BTW, I think Aaron Gordon has some bust potential. I know he'll at least be a defensive specialist, but his feel for the game on offense kinda scares me. He's just not very skilled, smooth or nuanced, and I'm not sure this is something that can change. I just don't see him putting up many points consistently. I actually like Vonleh ahead of Gordon and Smart right now.

Had a good conversation with a friend of mine today who is a D1 assistant coach. The more I hear about him, the more I think Exum could slide into the top 3 (likely 3rd behind Embiid and wiggins). The guy said every college and pro scout who has seen him raves about him. Alpha dog type, very coachable, smart/well-spoken, and tons of talent. Smooth 6'6" PG's with great handles and athleticism don't grow on trees.

I think there's a very clear-cut top 4 in this draft. 5 or below would be crushing.

I'm really, really hoping for top 4.

We'll still get a nice piece if someone leap frogs us, but I was hoping for more than just a "nice piece" from our tank pick. We have more than enough nice pieces already. We need a bona fide star.

I have Exum ahead of Randle and at least on the same tier as Parker.

Our chances of getting in the top 4 are 43% or 44%. It's not quite 50-50.

The top 4 picks should all be All Stars, and I see some drop-off at that point.

There's a slim chance that someone will take Randle or Smart in the top 4, letting a top-4 player slide to 5.

I wouldn't bet a dime on that happening.

Smart is my pick after the Wiggins/Parker/Embid trio. I think me, Vermin and a couple others are only on that bandwagon though.
