Following potential 2014 draftees

Right now, if we were to get the 5th pick, it would be between Smart and Gordon for me.

It has always been between gordon, randle, and vonleh for me...... in that order

Here's my Draft Board of the moment ---

Wiggins
Embiid (pending medical clearance)
Parker
Exum
Vonleh
Randle
Gordon
Smart
Saric
McDermott

Of the players in question I would rank them:

1. Randle
2. Gordon
3. Vonleh

Rebounding stats tells me Vonleh is a hustler and a hard worker, but Randle & Gordon both seems to have that extra gear that they shift into late game or what have you, that seems to push their teams over the top. Vonleh does have that quiet unassuming demeanour, but I do question whether he wants it bad enough like Randle/Gordon does.

Agree with this. I think Vonleh has a real shot at going #5 in the draft.

Burke/Hayward/Vonleh/Kanter/Favors

Nice length, decent offense, strong rebounding, adequate floor balance...

...if Vonleh has enough quickness to contain on defense out on the perimeter.

I doubt that Vonleh can defend quick wings. I think Vonleh's position is either being a solid PF athlete with good length, size and skills or that matchup nightmare Center who can step out of the paint and stretch the defense. If his reported handles are for real he can really create space under the basket in that role. Think of Al Horford.

Being a GM in the 5-8 range... tough job.

Honestly I feel like the 5-9 range this year is way deeper and more skilled than in most years. You maybe don't have this transcendent can't miss talent at #1, but you have 4 guys in the front where you can easily imagine that they have a good development curve and get there. And then there's the 5-9 range which all have significant upside to become very important players on good teams.

I don't like Vonleh at the 3.

He's more of a mismatch at PF than he is at SF.

Agree -> Read above I'd even say Center may be where he's most useful after adding some muscles.

How similar is Vonleh to Bosh?

I'd say their bodies are similars, their game not yet except that both have a soft touch. I think it's hard to tell what Vonleh's game is going to be in the future.

Vonleh at Center? LOL.. what??!! How tall is he? 6'9???

Wait till he get measured. Read reports he's grown over the last year. Right now I expect him to be somewhere between 6'10 and 6'11 in shoes. That's Dwight Howard, Al Horford size.

Favors is a good screenplay defender. Might be good to have him defend the roll/pop man and have another guy deeper in the paint that also offers versatility on offense. Just saying it's an option.

Yeah a true 7 footer like Embiid might do the job. But what this POR team has taught me is you'd really only need a semi-decent Center to be effective - he doesn't really need to be an All Star or anything like that.

- Who played Center in the Heat teams that won the Chips?

- Mavs? They had Chandler.

First of all the way I look at it there's a decent probability that the Jazz draft 3rd 4th or 5th. In the latter case we got the guys gone who we think have perennial all star upside.
I'd like a Center like Embiid a lot, but we there's another 10 teams that are in (wannabe)contention mode each and every year. And there's more than one way that leads to Rome.

And I think there's a possibility that one of those ways includes both Favors AND Vonleh as a frontcourt starting duo. They offer versatility on defense and Vonleh has the upside to become very good on offense. Favors offensive potential is somewhat shaky, but we'll find out in the next year or two.

But with these two you can do some creative horns sets like the Raptors are doing this year. You have the possibility to take a Favors screen and execute it as pick and roll with a corner shooter on his side. You can go on Vonleh's side which leaves both roll and pop potential. Plus on this side you have Hayward on the wing to slash into the paint as a secondary ballhandler following a handoff if the pop option didn't work, which opens up a lot.

Just saying there's potential. Just look at Enes offense right now and tell me other than offensive boards what can't Vonleh do that Kanter does. And vice versa. I think Vonleh has a whole lot more to offer than Enes at this point.

The first one? Shaq. He was pretty decent.

It's hard to follow the Heat model, because they had/have one of the greatest players of all time in LeBron James….he allows you to do unconventional things. Plus, they basically played Bosh at center, and I would consider him to be more than semi-decent.

Tyson Chandler with the Mavs was far more than semi-decent. Great defensive player, and that's what you want/need out of a center. Be a defensive force who can stop the other team. That's how you win in the playoffs.

Favors & Vonleh front-court is more raw than a 30-piece catch of the day sashimi platter.

Favors kanter = raw
Favors embiid = raw
Favors randle = raw
Favors gordon = raw
