Looking for genuine discourse re: Donald Sterling/NBA

If I spouted off a racist diatribe which was made public I'd probably be fired from my job as well, even if I had spoken the words in private. I imagine a lot of people in here could say the same.

I wouldn't, however, go to jail or have any consequences from the government--which is really what the freedom of speech right is about.

ok.

so basically i have to frisk anybody entering my home for electronic recording devices.

beacuse if i go into a discusion for example about "gay mariage" i might get fired.

cus to some those are bigotted. for now it is kinda still allowed to express my views on that

So much weirdness going on in this here thread.

My take on the matter:

The NBA is a business that takes care of it's players and owners. Sure, Donald Sterling has every single constitutional right and privilege to say whatever the hell he wants. But free speech has never in the history of free speech, been without consequence. A policeman, or judge or civil official would not have been able to fine Sterling for what he said (although they did fine him for what he did in SoCal with his discriminatory rental policies, settled out of court) but the NBA has a different set of rules altogether, and absolutely must protect it's bottom line.

If you were a young black kid with tons of talent, would you want to play for any owner that acted like that? What if the league just said, "well, that is Mr. Sterling's private opinion, so free speech bitches!"? That completely undermines the business and the character of the NBA. Sure it is private, but Donald Sterling became a public figure in the eyes of the NBA and the world 31 years ago when he purchased the Clippers, and his actions are subject to punishment by the NBA and what it sees fit.

Personally, I think it is awesome that the old douche bag is going to be forced out of the NBA. It's not like he is going to lose money on the Clippers sale. They are probably one of the most valuable franchises in the NBA, given their market share in LA.

I am undoubtedly without Racism and I think most people here on this board are as well.

About time one brow chimed in

I chimed in back on page 6.

As for Sterling, his racism is old news and I have no sympathy for him. At the same time, I'm not fond of using a recording by a private individual to condemn him, either. A real-life case of Black-and-Gray morality, and I'm not sure who's grayer.

What do you believe? I believe most people in the aggregate are good. I'm guessing you believe otherwise.

Your first mistake is looking for logic in the mind of a bigot.

I was trying to analyze only this conversation to determine IF he was a racist/bigot. I had no assumption going into it.

Taking only the released conversation he was either jealous or he was sick of getting crap from his peers about what his mixed race mistress was doing.

Apparently there is other behavior to take into account I was unaware of.

WTF? I thought your stance on this issue is that donald sterling did nothing wrong and that he was screwed over by being recorded.
Now you are on silvers side? (he is punishing donald sterling big time for saying what he said

Watch as a Magic Johnson led consortium ends up buying the team. That would be funny. Totally screwed up, but funny.

Watch them get bought and moved to Seattle, St. Louis, Vegas...

SO much for the limelight Griffin and Paul.

He should be fined and lose multiple picks. This is the very least they should do.

What it is with you and clothes? This was a very small sign of protest. It's probably the smallest backlash possible, given the kind of labor they are providing. With a simple gesture they show revulsion at the ownership, but then continue to play for the love of the game and the good of their careers. Seriously, anybody who gets a bee in their bonnet over the warmups is douching it.

Isn't that Stoked's moto "Douching it"?

so both teams have their recording scandals!

where is Rosemary Woods when they need her?

No. 3: Report: Ex-Warriors assistant taped conversations – The Golden State Warriors’ coaching staff under Mark Jackson has seen its share of changes since the season began. On March 25, assistant coach Brian Scalabrine was demoted to the NBA D-League because of what was called a “difference in philosophies” with Jackson. On April 5, Warriors assistant coach Darren Erman was fired for, as GM Bob Myers put it, a “violation of company policy.” Chris Broussard of ESPN.com reports that Erman’s firing may have had to specifically do with him secretly taping conversations between the coaching staff:

Sources said Erman, who was coach Mark Jackson’s second assistant, would record coaches’ meetings, meetings between the coaches and players, and informal discussions among coaches that took place in the team’s coaches room — all without the participants’ knowledge.

“He was taping everything,” one source said. “Taping pregame speeches wouldn’t have been that bad, but he was taping guys just sitting around talking in the coaches’ office.”

Sometimes Erman would be present during the tapings. Other times, he would leave the room and leave his phone behind to record conversations the other coaches were having.

It is unclear what Erman did with the recordings. The sources weren’t sure if he shared them with the club’s owners or front office executives.

“Was he taping it for himself or was he taping it for management? That’s not known,” a source said. “But he had a lot of communication with members of the front office.”

The Warriors’ other coaches began noticing a change in Erman’s demeanor and behavior in March, a source said. A few weeks later, they discovered that he was recording them. After being caught, Erman told the club he had been recording the conversations for three weeks. Jackson kept Erman on his staff for another week before Warriors’ management fired him.

This may not be popular, but realistically "they" should do nothing to the man. He is entitled to his opinion as much as the next guy. If he were on a nationally televised interview or something and said those things as a spokesperson of the NBA he should be subject to the NBA's conduct clause if such a thing applies. He said it in the supposed privacy of his own home and the only reason anyone even knows about it is his gold-digging "girlfriend" trying to win the lottery in law suits and notoriety. I know there are plenty of things my wife and I discuss I would never want aired on TV and we should be entitled to that privacy especially if it is in my own home. Just my $0.02.

Edit:

That is, for THIS particular case. For all the **** he did publicly he should have his ball squashed by a bi-curious sumo.

I get what you are saying, but the nba has to protect their bottom line. If the players start leaving because they know that a racist owner is in power, the league will lose a ton of value. Integrity aside, there are literally tens of thousands of jobs in the nba that could be at stake with the amount of employees aside from players each team has. That's a ton of responsibility. Had it been a private thing that had not been leaked to the news, it probably would not have been a huge issue, even if it was known generally around the league.

It's about time though, this guy has been a huge douche for decades.
