The Millers/ Jazz consideration of Stockton as head coach, the options:
1. The foregone conclusion that they will give hime the job if he wants it
2. Interviewing out of respect, but knowing he'll say no
3. Risking damage to the Jazz brand and alienating the fan base if he says yes and they decide for someone else. They may find a way to save face, but if he is interested it puts them into a public relations bind and pressures them to hire him even if they'd rather have Messina or someone else.
3 is where the risk comes in.
I think Stock will say no, or that his heart would not be really into it, but the move to interview him could backfire.
My (completely unsubstantiated) hunch is that the Millers are driving the Stockton interview and DL is going along to be a good soldier.
If Stockton becomes the next head coach.... Zulu predicts he will be known more for his coaching then playing in the SLC in 20 years!!!
Why do you assume that the Millers and DL have precisely the same vision? Do you think that GMs having different visions from ownership are uncommon? So much so that you overtly dismiss these options with a "gtfo"? You have a lot of confidence in your opinion that the Millers and DL are perfectly aligned, while I am speculating (I said "completely unsubstantiated") that it might be different. Which is a more reasonable position?
Why do we automatically assume Stockton was interviewing for the HC job? John has shunned the public spotlight since the day he stepped onto the Jazz' court. However, we know he has worked a few weeks during the summer with various PG's such as Deron and now Trey. Perhaps DL wanted to offer him a position similar to Hornacek's when Jeff started as a part-time shooting coach for AK. That would be completely separate and not interfere with a new coaching staff. John could come in and work with not only Burke, but also Neto. Or Maybe Dennis isn't 100% sold on Burke and wanted to pick John's brains regarding Exum and Smart and their prospects of being franchise PG's.
DL has already won a couple of battles within the organization: 1) the decision to rebuild instead of keeping Millsap, Foye, etc.; 2) the decision to let Ty go. I doubt DL is going to hire a coach the Millers want and he doesn't.

But, since he has zero track record as a coach, what he could be known for coaching might not be good. I for one would NEVER hire a guy for HC who has never been a HC. Its a huge change from player to HC and nearly as big going from assistant coach to HC. You wanna be a HC in the NBA? Start lower and learn the ropes. Give me a guy like Messina with a long track record of great success.
Apparently I'm wrong according to Locke...maybe I'll take the time to refute his premise a bit (that the best route to being a successful coach is straight from playing). But I agree with you that it is ideal to "learn the ropes." However, I'll disagree with you on not hiring a coach who has previous HC experience. If that were the case, you'd generally just get one of the recycled HC's who has failed somewhere before. Or you get a coach jumping up from college, which seems to be one of the least successful routes. Ideally, in my mind, you want one of the bright assistants coaches from a successful NBA team. Or, perhaps a guy like Messina wanting to prove he can be as successful in the NBA as he was internationally. But, since he has zero track record as a coach, what he could be known for coaching might not be good. Locke say that the Jazz have been Stealthy interviewing candidates!!!
Big blow up in Memphis right now. Dave Joerger might be released from his duties.
He seems an interesting possibility should that happen.

Just got off the phone with Chris Wallace. Quick report coming soon, but Dave Joerger is and will remain the coach.

Maybe Messina wanted SVG-type money?Take it for what it's worth (I haven't been too impressed with Sheridan's accuracy since he struck out on his own), but Chris Sheridan reporting that he's heard that the Jazz have some interest in Blatt. Sheridan also pushing for the Knicks to get interested in Blatt.

I will say they are aligned, you will say there is a great conspiracy. I think I am a bit more reasonable.
I guess ESPN could be lying...
