What's new

***Official new head coach search thread*** (merged)

All else being equal the Spurs major changes this year were the assistant coaches.

Tim Duncan: 1997-present
Manu Ginobili: 2002-present
Tony Parker: 2001-present
David Robinson: 1989-2003

Gregg Popovich (HC): 1996-present

Championships: 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007

I think you can give credit for those championships to having SUPERSTARS and one of the two best HC's in the league (Jackson being the other one). Sorry Jerry, but lack of titles makes you 3rd at best. Don't forget they should have won two years ago had it not been for fumbling the game away. What is the difference this year that has put them back into elite territory? Kawhi Leonard has developed into their 3rd leading scorer. That was a helluva trade for Pops. And, they keep bringing in solid contributors to complement like Belinelli and Mills. They had 6 players average double figures, more than making up for the decline in their Big-3. But yes, give the credit to Boylen. I'm sure it was his idea to rest the older players from time to time during the regular season in order to have them fresh for the playoffs. Oh wait, Pops got fined for that a couple of years ago before Boylen even arrived!

The one thing I DO agree on is coaching under Pops CAN teach you a thing or two. What you do with that knowledge is an entirely different matter.

Oof. If allowing the owner into the locker room scares off good coaching candidates, Gail/Greg should commit to staying the **** out of the locker room.

I agree

Excellent catch, Mellow. I anticipate a coach that'll be vetted on several levels. It speaks to their desire, I think, to get someone in here who will be successful for years and not just next year. Don't know that that's possible any more in the NBA (the ghost of Jerry Sloan), but I'm glad that's the ambition. I'm old enough now to almost prefer stability and mediocrity to a new cast every year or two that I don't know.

Old Fart out.
Just the opposite, Doc. Any successful business will have the people with the specific knowledge of operations being allowed to use those skills and not have their hands tied. Greg and Gail have limited basketball expertise. Larry H had a bit more, but still not on the level of a coach or GM. Why the HELL do Greg and/or Gail need access to the locker room?

Millers meddling in basketball matters is disconcerting. They should stay the HELL out of the way. Look at what ownership involvement has wrought lately for other teams (NY Knicks, Dallas Cowboys, etc.). If I were DL, I'd be out there exploring other GM positions and jump at the first chance I got. Have to say after reading this, I kind of wish the Millers would just lose interest and sell the team. Perhaps after Gail dies, the kids will decide to cash out. That's probably the only chance the Jazz will EVER have at winning a title...and that will come after the move to Seattle or Vegas when REAL owners arrive who turn over the team COMPLETELY to basketball people and enjoy the game from their luxury seats.

The interview was mostly full of the typical non-answer answers, but Lindsey was more candid when Monson asked him why is it taking so long? Lindsey responded by saying it is like a marriage relationship that takes time to build. That one two hour interview is not enough time for the millers to feel comfortable. He also mentioned the difficulties the jazz organization presents because of the extra expectations such as allowing the owner into the locker room after every home game, and commitments to the Jr. Jazz program.
Well, cross Messina off the list. Why would a professional want to align himself with such a Mickey Mouse organization?

Geez, I can't believe it. Yesterday Lindsey finally cracks open the door to the coaching search, if only just a bit, to reveal the inner organizational workings and perhaps some reasons why there is no coach yet and nobody here posts about it!

Lindsey explained that he has told Randy Rigby and the Millers that he is a coaching guy, that he likes coaches and can build scenarios around any of the coaches they have interviewed, but they are going to have to help him by choosing a guy they feel they can work with on all the other stuff that is important to them.

Lindsey also revealed that it is very unlikely the jazz keep all three picks. "We are building a team not draft picks", and said that he told his players staff that if they really like a guy at 23 pr 35 then they need to own it and argue for why the jazz should take him instead of using the asset. Adding three young guys to this team does not help us build a team. Strangely he also mentioned that it will be possible, for the jazz to acquire additional 2nd round picks.

I'm going back now to my self imposed ban.

Nice review. I heard it too but did not get as much out of it as you did. I thought that it was all basically non-answers. But that is only to be expected.

So the crappy ex Mizzou coach is the front runner?

Wow.

Mizzou couldn't run him out of town fast enough! I also remember his teams. Lots of 3s and 1 on 1 ball. Essentially the same crap Corbin did.

After 3 terrible years of Corbin the summer of retribution brings us...

Some crappy college coach and Aaron Gordon.

Ooof

Well, I wasn't endorsing the idea of owners in the locker room. I just like the idea of finding a good coach that you keep for a while to create and build a team culture. They wanted that with Corbin, but clearly saw that it wasn't going to happen with him. I hope they back off the locker room meddling, etc., but I'm all in favor of getting someone who is about more than simply the game. It is a game, but it is also a larger narrative they're building/selling...

If a coach is winning, he stays. If he's not, you let him go. I don't give a crap if the guy has the people skills of Hannibal Lecter. And who gives a rat's *** about the Junior Jazz program? Utah has generally sent out rookies to go to the podunk towns of Utah and Wyoming. Send a bench player and an assistant coach. Heck, make it Alex Jensen's responsibility going forward. If what DL said is true...i.e. they're more concerned with a warm, fuzzy feeling than hiring the best basketball mind, then I say to hell with the Millers. Please, SELL the team before you become as bad as Dolan. This is the SINGLE most important decision in the rebuild. If you trust Lindsey, let him do his job. And frankly, I find it ALARMING he let this info out. Something tells me he found a great candidate or two that the Millers simply didn't like. WAKE the $%#^ UP, Greg! This isn't like hiring a sales manager for one of your dealerships!

LOL at those of you getting uptight about the Millers in the locker room. They OWN the team. You act like a CEO has no right checking up on the business. Dropping by after a game to shake hands with players isn't undermining or interfering with a coach. If the coach is smart, he would take the opportunity to suck up; if you get Gail on your side, you can bet you will at least coach through the end of you contract.

And the Millers selling the team would mean the end of the Utah Jazz.

You can leave at anytime. Why even say that if you don't intend to? Just Bizzare.

One small nugget of news and you turn it into some form of hatred for you team. This is your pattern. So it is time to leave rather than threaten...

what do we know about Adrian Griffin that we have not read in the articles? Is he going to be a good coach?

Of course they have the right, I don't think anyone is arguing that. But is it wise? If you are not an expert, hire an expert and then let them do their job and don't meddle.

Take a read of mellow's post about Lindsey talking about the hiring process. I didn't hear the interview, so I don't know what DL actually said. I also don't know if having meddling owners makes it more difficult to hire a good coach. If this sort of stuff is going to affect the quality of the hire, however, I'd obviously prefer the owners to change their behavior.

I heard a bit of the interview as I was driving home from work. Lindsay is a master at giving lengthy, coherent responses to questions without revealing a thing. From the part that I heard, my impression was that he was merely reciting a list of topics he covers while interviewing prospects. As part of the interview, he would naturally discuss all aspects of the "family" business -- including post-game visits by the owners and the Junior Jazz program -- so that the new coach would have a clear understanding of his working environment. I would think that how an applicant responds to this "revelation" would give valuable insight into the character of the candidate. I would assume that if the Jazz really wanted a coach who objected to the Millers coming into the locker room or his participation in Junior Jazz, the coach's contract could be written accordingly.
