Working life

That being said, Dick, I love my job and my life. I've been blessed with a wealth of good people and good times -- but not monetarily, which is due to my lack of education. Stay in school, kids.

That clear things up for you, Ricky?

I wasn't trying to troll you dave. I actually think you're selling yourself short. I think you're a pretty intelligent guy with a good personality. You're young enough to go back to school, if need be. I also think you're the type of guy that should work for himself.

You're definitely blessed with a devoted wife (assumed) and kids.

Did you buy a home or rent?

Im not sure I understand Frank. How can you say its not a valid point in the context of teaching, when teachers make so little?

You picked up on the point of my post with your absolutes comment. Yes, I provided the opposite extreme. It's a personal decision and deserves better than blanket advice about debt.

BTW, on the debt thing you're kinda sounding like a certain group of old, [up until recently] white men, who are kinda popular out here in Utah. Are you sure you're an atheist?

I don't think debt should be the only consideration when thinking of education, but considering the current fiscal environment, I , personally, think it's a very important one. Especially considering that the nature of debt is like an albatross on life. It affects everything...depending on how much you have.

Yes, I am an Atheist. I'm not sure of your reference.

The joke was "get out of debt" is a Mormon drumbeat. I'm sure I could find one hundred references.

It was a joke? Ok. Maybe the meaning is lost in translation since I am not of the Utahr variety.

BTW Dick, you couldn't pay me enough to go back to school. I hated it with every ounce of my being. Every Gods damned ounce.

The difference between a Bachelor's and a Master's can, even in the same job, be $5000/year, and further there are some jobs you can't get with a Bachelor's. So, getting the Master's can be worthwhile financially.

Originally, this is what KEK the Superteacher said:

I have no desire to get my Masters in anything because I love being in the classroom.
I pointed out that those things aren't mutually exclusive and further down the line talked about the advantages of having a Masters in the teaching field.

Apparently, this is a sore spot for him cuz he got real defensive at that point.

Now other fields maybe you don't need it so much. I wouldn't know. I do know my wife only has her associates and does extremely well with her work. So in other fields it might not matter so much.

But in general I think the more education you get the better off you are going to be.

What would be the difference in school tuition going from a BA to a Masters?

I'd make about $1,500 more per year at the most with my Master's. Awesome, that would pay huge dividends....25 years later...but hey, it's all for the kids. I should get that great education...at GCU!!! Because that's the pinnacle of education. I'm shocked it's even accredited.

Since you missed it Viny

Grand Canyon University. If I remember right it ran about 6-7G. Most of the teachers and admins I know that is the norm for price. I think Phoenix runs about 8G.

Surprisingly, the stuff from my Masters is some of the best educational info I've run into.

If a masters degree would only cost $8000 then even $1500/yr would provide a pretty damn good rate of return. Utah's school districts will give you a much better raise for earning a masters degree. Last I saw a few years back, Granite School District would raise you $1500/yr for every 20 credit hours. You didn't have to earn a masters before seeing a return. That's not a bad way to earn a raise during the summer off season.

I believe KEK is in NJ. Furthermore, isn't a masters offered by Phoenix kind of considered fake?

Yes and yes.

All the administrators I know automatically throw out resumes for candidates who've gotten their Masters from Phoenix or GCU or such. It's looked at as a sort of lazy shortcut to getting a bump in pay. But hey, what do I know? Conan's all about learning and the kids so he went out and got the best education possible at GCU. An utter joke.
